OPTICAL REVIEW, a publication of the Optical Society of Japan (an affiliate of the Japan Society of Applied Physics), is the only international optics journal from Japan. The journal, now in its fifth year of publication, publishes research and review papers in all branches of optics on the bimonthly basis.
OPTICAL REVIEW accepts papers in all branches of optics. The journal contains original research papers (regular papers, short notes, and letters) and review papers, all written in English. The letter section is intended for the rapid dissemination of important results, while the short note section is provided for brief reports.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscript for OPTICAL REVIEW
- The original and one duplicate of the entire manuscript are required in English.
- Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with "Instructions for Preparation of Manuscript" described below.
- Manuscripts with 'Tokohyo' for domestic contributors or "Application for Publication in OPTICAL REVIEW' form for overseas contributors should be sent to the Editorial Office of OPTICAL REVIEW, The Institute of Pure and Applied Physics(IPAP) 8F, Toyokaiji Building No.12, 6-9-6 Shinbashi, Minato-ku,Tokyo 105-0004, Japan
- Prospective authors of review papers should contact an editor of OPTICAL REVIEW before preparing manuscripts. They will generally be asked to submit proposals for their papers.
Publication Charge of OPTICAL REVIEW
The authors (or their institution) are requested to pay the publication charge according to the following rates when the paper is accepted. This entitles the author to receive 50 reprints. For a regular paper, a letter paper, a short note or a review paper:?0,000P], where P stands for the number of printed pages of the paper. For papers exceeding eight printed pages, the authors are requested to pay an extra charge of ?,000 per additional page. The standard color printing fee is ?,000 per color page, regardless of how many color diagrams the page contains. Additional reprints may be ordered in lots of 50 at an extra charge of ?000P per lot. The extra charge for covered reprints is ?,000 per paper.
Instructions for Preparation of Manuscript
- General Instructions
- A manuscript should consist of the following in the order given: the title, the authors' names and their affiliations, the abstract, keywords, the main body of the paper, the appendix (if any), references, captions for figures, and the tabular material. The manuscript should be neatly typed, double spaced, with margins of at least 2 cm on the left and right sides, on white bond paper, on one side of the sheet only. The size of the paper should be A4.
- Title, Authors' Names and Affiliations
- The title, the authors' names and their affiliations should be typed on the first page.
- Abstract
- The length of the abstract should be no more than 14 lines for a regular paper, 10 lines for a letter and 7 lines for a short note.
- Keywords
- Keywords, 5-10 in number, should be typed on the line following the abstract, starting with the headline KEYWORDS:.
- Main Body of the Text
- The main body of the text should start on a new page. Authors are encouraged to use the International System (SI) of units where appropriate.
- References
- References should be indicated in the text by superscript numbers followed by a right paren such as 1), 2,3) and 4-8,11). For the proper form, see the following examples.

- Tables and Figures
- Tables should be numbered consecutively in the order of their appearance in Arabic numerals. They should be typed on separate sheets, and each caption should be typed above the table to which it pertains. Figures should be separately drawn in India ink on heavy bond paper or cloth. The size of the paper should be the same as the text. Smaller figures and photographs should be pasted on paper of this size. They should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and have suitable, self-explanatory captions. All figure captions should be given on a separate sheet, not on the figure itself. The desired locations of figures and tables should be indicated in red ink in the margin of the text. Printing in color should be requested by marking "color printing" in the margin in red. For detailed instructions on the preparation of figures, consult the AIP Style Manual issued by the American Institute of Physics.
- Acknowledgments and Appendix
- Acknowledgments follow the main text of the paper and precede appendices, if any, and the list of references.
