About the journal
The Northern Journal of Applied Forestry is a refereed professional publication serving practicing foresters and forestry-allied professionals. It invites contributions from all workers who by experience or research have developed successful new practices or techniques. Subjects may be any of the goods, services, and problems of northeastern, mid-western, and boreal forests in the US and Canada.
The first test of any manuscript is its usefulness to the field forester or land manager. Manuscripts will be reviewed by the Editor, associate editor(s), and, normally, by experts in the subject matter being reported. Notification of the acceptability of a manuscript for review will be immediate. The formal review process will not ordinarily exceed 90 days. Final acceptance or rejection of all manuscripts is the prerogative of the Editor. Manuscripts revised and returned to the Northern Journal of Applied Forestry more than 6 months after review will be treated as new manuscripts.
In addition to peer-reviewed articles, NJAF publishes the following edited but nonrefereed contributions: Field Notes, which describe useful ideas and findings; and Computer Corner, which describes useful computer-related applications.
Normally, only manuscripts not previously published will be considered. Previously published work includes that published in journals and proceedings generally available in libraries.
The Society of American Foresters holds copyright to the Northern Journal of Applied Forestry, and authors will be asked to assign their rights before their contributions are published. A form will be provided for this purpose. Authors whose work is not subject to copyright, e.g., federal government employees, should so state when they submit their manuscripts.
Instructions to Authors
Style and Form
Manuscripts must be submitted in final form. Inadequately prepared manuscripts may be returned without review. The author is responsible for accuracy of data, names, quotations, citations, and statistical analyses. Recommended style manuals are: Chicago Manual of Style, 14th or 15th ed. (University of Chicago Press) and CBE Style Manual (Council of Biology Editors, Inc.). See the latter for abbreviations and symbols. English or metric units may be used, as long as usage is consistent within each article. Strict economy of words, tables, formulas, and figures should be observed and specialized jargon avoided. Manuscripts should be limited to eight journal pages, or about 30 typed pages including tables and illustrations. See "Manuscript Specifications" below for more detailed information on manuscript preparation.
Nomenclature and Terminology
Common names are used for most plants and animals. Scientific names are included in parentheses following the first use of the common name. The Checklist of United States Trees (Native and Naturalized) by E.L. Little Jr. (Agric. Handb. 541. USDA, 1979) and the appendixes of Forest Cover Types of the United States and Canada (SAF 1980) are useful references for plant names. Technical usage in forestry and allied fields follows The Dictionary of Forestry (SAF 1998).
Electronic Preparation
Disks should be submitted only with the final accepted and revised manuscript; do not send a disk with the original submission.
Page Charges
Manuscripts submitted to the Regional Journals are not assessed page charges. There is, however, a publication charge for figures and other illustrative material that authors wish to be produced in color. The charge is based on actual printing costs and will be determined prior to publication. Contact the editor for permission to print in color prior to submitting your manuscript for review.
Manuscript Specifications
Please adhere to the following specifications to ensure that review and potential manuscript publication is not delayed because of technical irregularities.
Manuscripts must be double-spaced throughout (including tables, illustration captions, and literature citations), with ample margins, and printed on one side of white paper. Authors should submit the five copies of the text, tables, and figures and one set of original figures.
Title page Please note all title page information should appear on a separate page.
Title The title should be concise, specific, descriptive, and no longer than 15 words. Series titles are acceptable only when all preceding papers have been published in the journal; acceptance of the first paper in a series is not a commitment to accept the remainder.
Author name(s). Provide the full name(s) of the author(s). Authors are anonymous to reviewers of manuscripts submitted. To preserve author anonymity, author names should appear on the title page only. The title page should include postal and e-mail addresses for all authors as well as a fax number for the corresponding author.
Acknowledgments. Recognize persons who helped on the project or article; list the grant or publication numbers.
Manuscript
Abstract and Key Words. Provide a concise abstract, 2 to 3 percent of the length of the text, but not more than 200 words. Ordinarily the abstract renders a summary unnecessary. At the end of the abstract add up to 5 key words for indexing that do not appear in the title. The abstract and key words should appear on a separate page. Repeat the title at the top of the page.
Text. Prepare the manuscript double-spaced including captions and literature citations. Text should be justified in 1 column 6 1/2 inches (165 mm) wide with 1 inch (25 mm) margins. Choose a readable type style, preferably 12 point Times Roman.
- Subscripts and superscripts should be clearly distinguished, zeros (0's) and ohs (O's) differentiated, and ones (1's) and els (l's) differentiated, if any of these could possibly be misunderstood by the copy editor.
- All tables and figures must be included with the manuscript and must be cited in the text so that the typesetter will know where to place them. If tables or figures have been renumbered after review, text references must also be renumbered. Place each table on a separate sheet with its title at top. If new figures replace old ones, these should be clearly indicated or instructions given to the editor to remove the old ones from the main files. Place table titles and figure captions together at the end of the manuscript. Attach individual captions to figures in review copies. Please read and follow the guidelines for Tables and Illustrations.
- Check all citations. Check the format in both the text and the citation list. Only those appearing in the text should appear in the citation list at the end of the article. See Literature Citationspage for style.
- Footnotes are gathered at the end of the article as endnotes. Designate endnotes in the text by numbers within brackets (e.g., [1]).
- Number each page.
Spelling. Authors should use an American dictionary as the standard for spelling. Many word processing programs allow selection of American or US preferences in their spell checkers, which can automate selection of the appropriate spelling.
Mathematical material. See the CBE Style Manual for methods of presenting mathematical material in the simplest form to ensure accuracy and prompt publication of paper.
