Aims and Scope:
The essential journal for Norwegian geographic research. Encompasses physical and human geography.
Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift - Norwegian Journal of Geography, published since 1926, is a continuation of Norsk Geografisk Aarbog (1889-1921) and is associated with the Norwegian Geographical Society.
The journal reflects the many facets of geography and tries to take an all-round geographic view, both regionally and thematically, by striking a equal balance between physical and human geographic material. Primarily the journal aims at presenting Norwegian geographic research directed towards the problems and areas with and in which Norwegian researchers are working.
In addition, the journal publishes articles by foreign authors, dealing with geographic themes based on studies in Norway or articles concerning geographic conditions of interest to Norwegian geographers.
From 1 January 1999, Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift - Norwegian Journal of Geography changed editorship. The editors are:
- Bernd Etzelm黮ler with special responsibility for geomorphology, glaciology, geocryology, geographical information technology and remote sensing.
- Mary Edwards with special responsibility for biogeography, landscape ecology, paleoecology and climate-related studies.
- Michael Jones with special responsibility for human geography.
Themes related to the geography of Norway, the Nordic countries and adjacent regions, including polar environments, are of special interest, but relevant topics dealing with other parts of the world are included.
In addition, research notes, short articles, including some of special interest for teachers of geography, reviews of Norwegian doctoral theses in geography, and other book reviews will be published in a separate section of the journal.
All articles are refereed by two independent reviewers.
Readership:
Human and physical geographers with an interest in Norwegian research.
Abstracting Information:

Human Geography; Geographical Abstracts. Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift-Norwegian Journal of Geography publishes scholarly papers in English only. However, the journal includes a section for short articles and reviews which may be in English or the Scandinavian languages. When preparing manuscripts for submission, authors are recommended to consult current copies of the journal for style. Contributors who are unfamiliar with English usage should have the language of their manuscripts checked prior to submission. This helps to avoid publication delays.

MANUSCRIPTS All articles will be reviewed by two independent referees. Three hard copies of the manuscript, typed in double spacing, and illustrations should be submitted to the editors at the address on the inside front cover. Separate sheets should be used for:
(1) Title and abstract. The first page should include:
- Title of article and author's name (normal usage) in block letters.
- Abstract in one paragraph, not exceeding 200 words. Begin with author's surname and initial(s), year of publication, title of paper, Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift-Norwegian Journal of Geography Vol. 00, 00-00. Oslo. ISSN 0029-1951.
- 3-5 keywords.
- Author's name, institution (English name) and address in italics, followed by corresponding author's e-mail address.
- Running head derived from the title of the article (maximum 10 words).
(2) List of references. (3) Tables with headings. (4) Figures. (5) Figure captions.
Checklist for manuscripts:
- Do not justify the text, but use a ragged right-hand margin.
- Bold typefaces should not be used.
- For multiple authors, use an ampersand (&) instead of 'and' in both the text and reference list; 'et al.' should not be italicised.
- Use single quotation marks, and double for quotations within quotations.
- Indicate new paragraphs with normal paragraph indentation. There should be no space between paragraphs.
- Two levels of headings (unnumbered) are to be used: 1st - CAPITAL LETTERS and 2nd - italics. If a third level is needed, this should be italicised and run into the text.
- Use italics for titles of published books and periodicals, and for non-English words and phrases. Provide an English translation of non-English words, phrases and names of institutions and organisations.
- Avoid redundant apostrophes, i.e. 1880s, not 1880's.
- Use words rather than numerals at the start of sentences and generally for numerals under 10.
- Units should be in metric, abbreviated but not punctuated (e.g. km, m, g, ha). Height above sea level is to be given as 'm a.s.l.' Temperatures should be in degrees Celsius (ºC). Radiocarbon dates should be given in full, with counting error, e.g. 10,100 ± 150 14C yr BP, and the laboratory number should be included in an appropriate place in the manuscript. Calibrated ages should be reported as a year or a range of years, e.g. 10,200-9800 cal yr BP.
- Scientific names at genus level and below should be italicised. Common names should be accompanied by the scientific name upon first use, e.g. Norway spruce (Picea abies).
- Avoid footnotes and endnotes; exceptionally, up to three endnotes may be placed between the text and reference list.
- Acknowledgements of grants and other assistance may be placed at the end of the text.
TABLES AND FIGURES
- All illustrations other than tables are to be numbered consecutively as Figures (e.g. graphs, drawings and photographs), using Arabic numerals. They should be identified with the name of the journal, the author's name and the Figure number.
- Lines on line drawings should be thick enough to allow for reduction. Letters and numerals should not be less than 2 mm in the final printed illustration.
- Photographs and other illustrations will be reproduced in black and white unless otherwise agreed with the editors. Any printed in colour will be at the discretion of the editors and at the author's expense.
- Tables should be numbered in separate sequence with Arabic numerals.
- Figures and Tables should be constructed to be reducible to the published page width (16.8 cm) or to the column width (8 cm). All Figures and Tables are to be referred to in the text by their number.
REFERENCES Take care that all references in the text are included in the list of references. Check that dates are correct. Ensure that page numbers are given for articles in periodicals and chapters in books. Missing or incorrect references may cause publication delays. Note the following:
- References in the text: Brown (1987), Brown & White (1991), or Brown et al. (1993) (for more than two authors).
