Instructions to Authors
Correspondence. Manuscripts (except for Editor-Communicated Paper) should be submitted in triplicate to the Publication Office of the Microbiology and Immunology, Center for Academic Publications Japan, 4-16, Yayoi 2-chome, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0032, Japan.
Page charge. As a rule, no page charge is due to an original article (less than eight printed pages) and to a Note (less than four printed pages). However, a cost of \14,000 per printed page will be assessed to the author for excess pages (eight or more printed pages for an original article and four or more for a Note).
General policy. Manuscripts should be in English. Contributions to the Journal include original reports of research or papers giving a full account of an investigation as well as preliminary notes concerning significant findings. Any manuscript submitted must be an unpublished report which is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
The cover page of the manuscript should contain the (a) title, (b) authors' full names, (c) complete mailing address of institute, corporation, or laboratory, (d) telephone number, facsimile number and E-mail address for correspondence, (e) proposed running head of less than 50 characters, (f) two to four key words for indexing, and (g) a subject section and a specified field.
A "Letter of Transmittal" should accompany each manuscript and should give the manuscript title and the name of the author for correspondence. The correspondence author should sign the declaration that all listed authors have seen and approved of the manuscript and have agreed to assign all copyrights after acceptance for publication to Center for Academic Publications Japan with the understanding that this statement does not preclude the use of the material for other purposes by the author(s).
Abbreviations for measurable units should be as follows (without period): cm, mm, μm, nm, A, ml, μl, g, μg, ng, pg, C (degree, Celsius), hr, min, sec, mM, nM, rpm, Hz, cpm, Ci, mCi, μCi, nCi, pCi, R, log (base 10), ln (base e), etc., but liter(s). Genus names, drugs, or any other abbreviations should be spelled out in full when first used in the text and in the Abstract. A list of the abbreviations arranged in alphabetical order must be provided on a separate page. Italics for scientific names or other purposes should be underlined to permit correct typesetting. The Editors reserve the privilege of editing manuscripts to make them conform with the adopted style.
Nomenclature of microorganisms. The correct names of the organism, binary names conforming with international rules of nomenclature, must be used. The spelling of bacterial names should follow the amended edition of the Approved List of Bacterial Names published at American Society for Microbiology, 1990 and validation lists published in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (formerly the International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology). Non-valid names must be enclosed in quotation marks. Current approved bacterial names can be confirmed at the world wide web site of the List of the Bacterial Names with Standing in Nomenclature (http://www.bacterio.cict.fr) or Bacterial Nomenclature Up-to-Date (http://www.dsmz.de/bactnom/bactname.htm). Descriptions of new taxon should not be submitted unless a specimen (normally a live culture) has been deposited in at least two or more public culture collections from two or more countries and it is designated as a type strain in the paper. Names used for viruses should be those approved by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) and published in Virus Taxonomy: Classification and Nomenclature of Viruses: Seventh Report of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (M.H.V. van Regenmortel et al., ed., Academic Press, San Diego, Calif., 2000). Vernacular names may be used after viruses are first identified.
Form of manuscripts. All copies, including references, legends, and footnotes, should be typewritten with wide margins using double or triple spacing. It is recommended that original articles be divided into the following sections: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, and References.
Abstract. All original articles and notes should be accompanied by an abstract which will appear at the beginning of each paper in the Journal. The abstract should not exceed 250 and 100 words for the original article and note, respectively.
Tables. Tables should be typewritten on separate pages, numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers, and collected at the end of the manuscript. All Tables must have descriptive headings, and should be understandable without reference to the text. In Tables only horizontal rules are used.
Figures and photographs. Charts, drawings, graphs, or photographs are all to be indicated as Figures, which are numbered consecutively in Arabic numbers. Line drawings of illustrations should be done in black waterproof drawing ink on white paper or graph paper ruled in blue. All figures must be suitable for reproduction without being retouched or redrawn. Photographs should be sent in triplicate glossy prints with clear contrast. Number each photograph with a pencil and indicate top on the reverse side. Illustrations in full color for publication are accepted. In this case, the cost price will be charged to the author. The legend for each Figure should be typewritten on a separate page. Adequate parts, where Tables and Figures are placed, should be indicated by arrows in the manuscripts.
References. In the text, references should be cited by number. The references should be listed in alphabetical order, by authors' surnames, and numbered as follows:
Citations of "unpublished data," "personal communications," "abstracts," and "theses," will not be accepted as References, but may be used parenthetically in the text.
Notes. Short preliminary reports of important findings can be submitted as Notes. A Note is preferably limited to three printed pages or less. A Note should not be divided into individual sections, but should be accompanied by an Abstract not exceeding 100 words.
Editor-Communicated Paper. Reports with high priority can be submitted as Editor-Communicated Papers to shorten the term from receipt to publication. Authors are to submit the manuscript (three hard copies and an electronic version on floppy disk clearly marked with type of computer, operating system and software used) directly to one of the Editorial Board members. If the manuscript is judged to be acceptable in this category, the paper will be published within an average of 10 weeks from receipt without any significant revision. Manuscripts submitted as an Editor-Communicated Paper should be proofread by a native English individual with editorial/academic experience before submission. The author may appoint an appropriate staff member of the Editorial Board to whom the manuscript is to be submitted (refer to the Editorial Board on the inside page of the front cover). Due to the limited number of manuscripts reviewed by each staff member of the Editorial Board, the author is advised to contact the staff member of the Editorial Board prior to submitting the manuscript to confirm the staff member's ability to handle it. The author should inform the Editorial Office of the submission at the same time he/she submits the manuscript to the staff member of the Editorial Board. Manuscripts may also be submitted directly to the Editorial Office. In this case, the procedure for acceptance may be delayed slightly as compared to sending the manuscript directly to a staff member of the Editorial Board. The form of each manuscript is to follow the general policy outlined for manuscript submission. Manuscripts judged not acceptable as an Editor-Communicated Paper can be processed following the standard procedure, although this is left to the discretion of the author.
Ethics. All studies that involve human subjects must abide by the rules of the internal Review Board and the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki (http://www.wma.net/e/policy/b3.htm), and papers that involve human subjects should include a statement that the Ethical Committee of the institution in which the work was done has approved it, and that the subjects gave informed consent to the work. Experiments with animals should be done according to the ethical standards formulated in the Declaration of Helsinki, and measures taken to protect animals from pain or discomfort should be mentioned.
Copyright. Copyright on all accepted manuscripts including electronically digitalized materials will be held by Center for Academic Publications Japan (CAPJ). It is necessary that a statement be signed by the corresponding author, expressly transferring copyright to CAPJ if the paper is accepted for publication in the Journal. No part of the published material may be reproduced elsewhere without written permission from CAPJ.
Electronic manuscript. Electronic manuscripts reduce the possibility of error and aid in the rapid delivery of page proofs. For the submission of manuscripts under general procedures, once a manuscript has been accepted, we encourage the author to send an electronic file of the manuscript to the Editorial Office. The name and type of hardware and software used to create the file must be provided.
Reprints. Reprints can be ordered at the price shown in a table accompanying galley proof.
Registration of DNA sequences. A new DNA sequence(s) described in the article appearing in this journal is requested to be registered in DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ), National Institute of Genetics, Mishima, Japan. A format for this registration is sent from DDBJ directly to the author after the publication.
