About the journal

Meteorologische Zeitschrift is a journal open to original English-language manuscripts from all fields of atmospheric sciences, covering meteorology and climatology, including the interaction of the lower atmosphere with the oceans, the land surfaces, and the middle and upper atmosphere. Short contributions and review articles are particularly invited. Six issues are published per annum and form one volume. Papers published in this journal are expected to make interesting and novel contributions from all topics of meteorology, including theoretical and experimental investigations, numerical simulations, statistical studies, information about operational work in meteorological services and on applied meteorology. Contributions on the philosophy and history of atmospheric sciences are also welcome. In addition to original papers and short communications, review articles, special reports, book reviews, laudatory articles, and obituaries are published. Special issues on specific topics or conferences may be published as feasible. Papers must not have been published previously. Authors are fully responsible for the content of their papers.
Meteorologische Zeitschrift was founded in 1866 by ``謘terreichische Gesellschaft f黵 Meteorologie'' (諫M); starting 1886 it was published jointly with the ``Deutsche Meteorologische Gesellschaft'' (DMG). The German, Austrian and Swiss Meteorological Societies refounded the Journal in 1992, thereby merging Meteorologische Rundschau and Zeitschrift f黵 Meteorologie (published by the Meteorological Society of the former GDR) into Meteorologische Zeitschrift. Since January 2000, the journal is published merged with Beitr鋑e zur Physik der Atmosph鋜e (cited as Contributions to Atmospheric Physics) under its previous title Meteorologische Zeitschrift.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscript submission
Manuscriptsmust be submitted in English only and produced by a word processing system, most preferable by LaTeX or Word for Windows. Please submit four copies of the manuscript with photocopies of illustrations to the technical editor: M. Schnee, Technical Editor, Meteorologische Zeitschrift Institute of Meteorology Free University of Berlin Carl-Heinrich-Becker-Weg 6-10 D-12165 Berlin, Germany Phone +49 30 7970 8328/8338 or Fax +49 30 791 9002 Email: ted_metz@bibo.met.fu-berlin.de The final electronic version of the text is to be submitted to the technical editor either on a 3.5'' diskette, ZIP-diskette, CD-ROM; alternatively it may be emailed. It must include all illustrations, either as files (specifications see section Figures below) or as high-quality reproductions.
Abstract:Each article must be preceded by an English Abstract and, if possible, a German Zusammenfassung. On a separate title page, please indicate the title of the paper, the names of all authors, their institutions and complete mailing and email-addresses, indicating the name of the corresponding author, whose mail and email-address will be printed as a footnote on the first page of the paper.
Page charges:Articles not exceeding 6 printed pages are published free of charge. Papers of more than 6 printed pages carry a page charge of EUR 150,-- per extra page. The submission of short contributions, 1 to 4 pages in length, is particularly encouraged, and will be fostered by preferential editorial processing.
Peer Review:Manuscripts will be reviewed in general by two referees.
Abbreviationsmust be explained as they are used in the text. SI units are mandatory. If necessary, a list of symbols is to be added. Equations must be written with extreme care, especially with respect to indices.
Headingsare to be typeset in regular letters (no capitals, no bold face, no underlining etc.).
Figuresmust be submitted on separate sheets of paper at the end of the manuscript. Please submit figure captions on a separate sheet of paper. Please refrain from the use of frames around or shaded backgrounds behind figures. With the final version of the manuscript, please submit figures as encapsulated PostScript (.eps) files where feasible; only if that is not possible, either high resolution TIFF-formatted (.tif, specifications see below) files, high-gloss photographs, clear high-contrast drawings or high-quality 600 dpi laser printouts must be supplied. Please allow for a reduction of the illustrations (most desirably to the width of one column, i.e. 86 mm). Individual letters should be well legible, and after reduction at least be 2 mm high. Files with pixel graphics should provide a minimum resolution of 300 dpi for grey-scale or colour-figures and of 1000 dpi for black and white figures (line drawings).
Colour figures:If colour figures are planned to be included, the authors are asked to consider if colour does contribute significantly to the understanding of their figures. If this is the case, they should be aware that a surcharge -- available on request -- will be applicable for each page containing colour figures.
Tablesshould be supplied on separate sheets with their headings. Please restrict the use of tables to an absolute minimum.
Captionsof figures and tables are required in English only.
References:The list of references (in alphabetic order) should only contain sources made reference to in the text. In the text they should be set in small caps, e.g. Name}s) (year) or (Name, year). In case of three or more authors the abbreviation ``et al.'' should be used in the text after the first author's name (Meyer et al., 1999). Example for a journal reference: Hoinka, K.P., 1997: The tropopause: discovery, definition, demarcation. -- Meteorol. Z., N.F. 6, 281-303. Example for citing a book: Goody, R.M., C.G. Walker, 1985: Atmosph鋜en. -- Enke Verlag, Stuttgart, 180 p. Example for citing a chapter in a book: Isler, J.R., D.C. Fritts, 1993: Tidal variability studies using an MF radar in Hawaii. -- In: Thrane, E.V., Blix, T.A., Fritts, D.C. (Eds.): Coupling processes in the lower and middle atmosphere. NATO ASI Series 387, 153--160. -- Kluwer, Dordrecht.
Proofs:Authors will receive proofs shortly before publication to correct typesetting errors. Changes to the contents of the manuscript will be charged in principle.
Offprints:For each article, 20 offprints will be supplied free of charge. Further copies of offprints may be ordered at cost price.
Citing Meteorol. Z.:Meteorologische Zeitschrift is to be abbreviated as Meteorol. Z.
Abstracted in:Information on the contents of this journal is abstracted in Meteorological Geoastrophysical Abstracts (MGA), Science Citation Index-Expanded/SciSearch? Research Alert? and Current Contents?physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences
Copyright:Submission of a manuscript for publication in Meteorologische Zeitschrift is considered binding assurance that this work has not been and will not be published elsewhere in this form and length. With acceptance and publication of a paper, the exclusive copyright for every language and every country is transferred to the publisher. This includes further editions, reprints and microfilms, and storage and compilation on electronic media.
