Instructions to Authors
General regulations
Medicina dello Sport, the journal of the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine, publishes original scientific papers on sports medicine topics. The manuscripts submitted for publication must conform precisely to the following instructions for authors and are themselves in conformity with the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Editors published by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (Ann Int Med 1988;105:258-265). The submission of the manuscript implies that the paper has not previously been published and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere, either in its entirety or in part. All illustrative material must be original. Illustrations taken from other sources must be accompanied by the publisher's permission. Manuscripts not accepted for publication will not be returned by the publishers. In conformity with the Helsinki Declaration, the journal reiterates that all research involving human beings must be conducted as indicated by the Helsinki Declaration.In conformity with the International Guiding Principles for Biomedi-cal Research Involving Animals recommended by the WHO, the journal requires that all research on animals conform to the said principles. Papers must be accompanied by the following declaration signed by ALL THE AUTHORS: "We, the undersigned, transfer ownership of our rights as authors to the Journal Medicina dello Sport in the event of our paper being published in the journal.We declare that the paper is original, that it has not been submitted for publication to any other journal and has not previously been published.We also declare that the research described in the present paper was carried out in conformity with the Helsinki Declaration and with the principles regulating research on animals.We implicity accept the fact that our paper will be presented anonymously for examination by the Editorial Board and for editorial revision if accepted. EDITORIALS are commissioned by the Edi-tor.They should deal with topics of major importance on which the authors express-es a personal opinion.Editorials should not be subdivided into sections. Medicina dello Sport reserves a certain number of pages for the publication without charge of a maximum of two graduate theses pertaining to sports medicine and judged to be worthy of publication by the schools in questions.They will be printed in the form of abstracts of six printed pages each.
Manuscripts
Three copies of papers, in Italian or English, should be despatched to: "Medicina dello Sport" - Istituto di Medicina dello Sport CONI-FMSI - Via Calori 6 - I-40122 Bologna. If the first author is a member of the FMSI, a photocopy of the membership card and of the annual revewal should accompany the manuscript. According to the new contract regulations, no contribution will be due for printing costs and the author will receive 20 free reprints with cover and a discount of 10% on rates for extra reprints and any additional costs (translations, photoliths, tables, etc.). The paper should be presented on doublespaced sheets, typed on one side only and subdivided into the following sections:
Title page
- Coincise title without abbreviations in the original language and accompanied by its translation into the other language.
- NAME, SURNAME AND SIGNATURE OF THE AUTHORS.
- Department and University, Division and Hos-pital or Body to which each author belongs.
- Signature authorising publication of the University Department's Head, the Hos-pital's Chief Medical Officer or the Direc-tor of the relevant Body. They should indicate whether "the work is the equal work of all authors", or specify the role played by each author.
- Name, address and telephone number of the author to whom correspondence or proofs should be addressed.
- Date of any congresses at which the papers has already been presented.
- Mention of any financial assistance or research contracts.
- Acknowledgements.
Summary and Key words The summary must contain a detailed synthesis of the key elements of the work. The paper must be accompanied by a summary in Italian and one in English, containing no more than 300 words, which should be structured as follows: Objective, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions. A maximum of 5 key words must also be given, both in Italian and in English. Key words should use the terminology of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) in the Index Medicus.
Text The text should be composed as follows:
Introduction Outlining current knowledge of the topic and the purpose of the study, and explaining why the results are being published.
Materials and methods A description of the clinical, technical or experimental techniques used in the study. Any methods and statistical procedures previously published in detail must be quoted under the appropriate reference numbers. Data referring to the material must be expressed fully and precisely, but also simply and concisely. Authors must comply strictly with the Guidelines for Statistical Reporting in Articles for Medical Journals (Ann Int Med 1988, 108 266-273). The generic name, dose and method of administration must be given for all drugs; no manufacturer's brand names will be accepted. Symbols and signs must be explained the first time they appear in the text and must conform to international standards.
Results These should be reported in the form of tables and graphs, if necessary statistically processed using illustrative material, and presented concisely in the text, avoiding comments and interpretations.
Discussion of results and conclusions This section comments on the results in terms of their relevance to clinical practice and experimental research and may compare the results with data from the literature.
References Works listed under "References" should be given consecutive Arabic number.References to these works in the text should be followed by the relevant number in parentheses. References should be listed in the standard form approved by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors.
Journals. Each Reference entry should give the surname and initial(s) of all authors up to six (if the article has more than six authors, list the first six followed by: "et al."), the original title of the article, the title of the journal (using Index Medicus abbreviations); year of pubblication; volume number; initial and final page numbers.Standard international punctuation must be adopted. Example: Sutherland DE, Simmons RL, Howard RJ. Intracapsular technique of transplant nephrectomy.Surg Gynecol Obstet 1978;146:951-2.
Books and Monographs. In the case of non-periodical publications, authors should list the name of authors and the title, edition, place of publication, publisher and date of publication. Example: G.Rossi. Manuale di otorinolaringologia. IV edizione, Torino: Edizioni Minerva Medica, 1987:67-95.
Tables Each table should be presented on a separate sheet correctly typed, laid out according to the journal's own pagination, numbered in Roman figures and briefly titled.Any notes should be added at the foot of the page and not incorporated in the title. Tables must be referred to in the text.
Figures Photographs should be submitted in the form of clean copies printed on card. A LABEL ON THE BACK SHOULD INDICATE THE NUMBER IN ARABIC NUMERALS, THE TITLE OF THE ARTICLE, THE NAME OF THE FIRST AUTHOR, THE POSITIONING (TOP OR BOTTOM).THE PHOTOGRAPHS SHOULD BE REFERRED TO IN THE TEXT. Do not write on the back of photographs.Do not scratch them or spoil them with staples.And wording on the figure should be stenciled on in block letters. Only the part essential to the article should be reproduced Histological photographs should always indicate the magnification ratio and staining method. Captions should be typed onto a separate sheet. Drawings, graphs and diagrams should be produced in black ink on gloss-finish paper or smooth white draftsman's paper, using stencil lettering where necessary.They may also be produced on a computer. Radiology photographs should be printed on paper.Electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms etc. should be submitted in their original form or photographed, never photocopied. IN THE CASE OF FIGURES IN COLOUR, IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE STATED WHETHER THEY ARE TO BE REPRODUCED IN COLOUR OR IN BLACK AND WHITE. Letters, numbers and symbols should be of a size to remain legible when reduced for publication. The ideal sizes for reproduction in this journal are the following: -nbsp;cm 7.2 (base) -cm 4.8 (height) -nbsp;cm 7.2 (base) -cm 9,8 (height) -nbsp;cm 15,8 (base) -cm 9,8 (height) -nbsp;cm 15,8 (base) -cm 18.5 (height): full page FIGURES THAT DO NOT CONFORM PRECISELY TO THE ABOVE STANDARDS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR PUBLICATION. Any changes to the proofs should be confined to typographical corrections.Any modifications to the text will be charged to the authors. Corrected proofs should be returned WITHIN 15 DAYS TO MEDICINA DELLO SPORT - EDIZIONI MINERVA MEDICA - CORSO BRAMANTE 83-85 - I-10126 TORINO. In the event of delay, the Editorial Board will be entitled to make its own corrections on the basis of the original already received. Forms for requests for extracts will be sent out with the proofs.
