Instructions to Authors
Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.
Medical Mycology is an International journal which specializes in original articles that describe innovative research on all aspects of invasive fungal disease in humans and animals. These include mycological, biochemical and molecular studies on the causal fungi; aspects of pathogenesis, immunology, and epidemiology; case reports of unusual infections; clinical and laboratory approaches to diagnosis; antifungal therapy and prophylaxis, and the mode of action, pharmacokinetics and assessment of new antifungal agents in animals and in humans. Review articles highlight topics of interest. The aim of the journal is to present the best work in its field from throughout the world, to provide a comprehensive reference base for medical mycologists, clinicians, infectious disease specialists and microbiologists.
Types of paper Original papers Reviews: authors who wish to submit review articles should send an outline plan of their proposed review (on one page of A4) to the Reviews Editor before preparing their manuscript. Case reports: for the description of unusual infections. Short communications: for the presentation of preliminary or brief observations that do not warrant publication as a full paper. Letters: intended to provide an opportunity to discuss points made in papers published in Medical Mycology; they are not intended for comments on medical and veterinary mycology in general or for the presentation of preliminary results.
Book reviews Manuscript submission Papers must be submitted exclusively to Medical Mycology and must not have been published previously. Papers accepted may be subject to editorial revision without notice and author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright to ISHAM.
We encourage manuscript submission by e-mail. The preferred package is Word for Windows (PC). The following are acceptable formats for graphics files: TIF, JPEG, GIF, BMP, PS, EPS, Excel (all PC format). Scanned images should be of a sufficient resolution: 300 dpi for halftones/colour; 500 dpi for combination halftones; 1000-1200 dpi for line art. WINZIP compression software should be used for large files (this can be downloaded for free from many freeware sites on the Internet). Indicate the file format and graphics packages used for all files submitted by email.
Alternatively, three copies of the manuscript and original figures must be sent to the Editor. All manuscripts must be accompanied by a disk (3?inch only). The disk version must match the print out exactly; in cases where differences are found the disk version will be used. The preferred package is Word for Windows. The disk must be labelled clearly and accompanied by a disk submission form. If you are asked to revise your paper, you should supply one copy of the revised manuscript with an exactly matching copy on disk to the Editor.
Papers for consideration should be sent to: Richard Summerbell, PhD, Medical Mycology, Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures, PO Box 85167, 3508 AD Utrecht, the Netherlands. Email: summerbell@cbs.knaw.nl
Reviews for consideration should be sent to: Andy J. Hamilton, PhD, Dermatology Laboratory, Clinical Sciences Laboratories, Guy's and St. Thomas's Medical and Dental School, Guy's Hospital, London Bridge, London SE1 9RT, UK. Email: andrew.j.hamilton@kcl.ac.uk
Preparation of manuscripts Manuscripts should be written in English. Manuscripts should be typewritten, on one side of the paper, with wide margins and double line spacing throughout. The pages must be numbered consecutively. Papers should be organised as follows: Full title and Short title; Name(s) and affiliations of author(s); Full postal address, telephone and fax numbers, and email address for the corresponding author; Summary (maximum 200 words); Keywords (up to four); Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgements; References; Tables; Figure captions. Statistics and measurements should be given in numerals when followed by a unit (e.g. 2 mg but two patients). SI units must be used. Abbreviations should be defined when first used in the text. Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission from authors and publishers for the publication of previously published material.
References Use the Vancouver system. References should be numbered in the order in which they first appear in the text. Only papers closely related to the author's work should be quoted and exhaustive lists should be avoided. The following examples illustrate the correct style for the different types of references:
Journal article 1 Author AB, Author CD. Title of paper. J Title Abbrev 1995; 00 (0): 000-000. Book chapter 2 Author AB, Author CD, Author EF, et al. [if six or more] Chapter title. In: Editor AB, Editor CD, eds. Book Title With Initial Uppercase Letters, 5th edn. Place: Publisher, 1995: 000-000. Book 3 Author AB, Author CD (eds). Book Title With Initial Upper-case Letters, 5th edn. Place: Publisher, 1995. Thesis 4 Author AB. Paper title with lowercase initials to all words. PhD thesis, University, 1995. Conference proceedings 5 Author AB. Paper title. In: Editor AB, ed. Proceedings Title, place, date. Place: publisher, 1995: 000-000 (for abstracts the abstract number should be cited instead of the page number). References to personal communications, unpublished results and papers submitted for publication (but not yet accepted) should only appear in the text, and in the following form: [A. B. Author, unpublished results]. [C. D. Author, personal communication].
Tables Tables should be numbered according to their sequence in the text; all tables should be referred to in the text. Each table should be supplied on a separate sheet, never within the body of the text. The table heading should be brief and self explanatory. Column headings should be brief and include units in parentheses where applicable. Only horizontal rules should be used.
Figures Line illustrations should be supplied as high quality laser print outs. Shading should not be used as this does not reproduce well. Us a sans serif font for labelling (e.g. Helvetica, Arial, Univers). Photos should be provided as prints. Colour figures may be submitted for inclusion. A limited number of colour figures can be reproduced free of charge - this is entirely at the discretion of the Editor. Others will have to be paid for by the author(s). All figures should be numbered consecutively and cited in the text in order. Each original figure should be labelled clearly on the back with the figure number, author's name and the top edge identified.
Nomenclature Proposals for names of new taxa of fungi must conform with the requirements of the current International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, as should the scientific names used for fungi. Binomials should appear in italics or be underlined in the text; each must be spelt out in full at first mention both in the summary and the text; thereafter the generic name may be abbreviated appropriately. Names of mycoses should conform with those recommended by ISHAM (see J Med Vet Mycol 1992; 30: 110 - A copy of which can be obtained from the Editorial Office. Authors who wish to use alternative names for fungal diseases should cite the ISHAM recommended name in parentheses at the first mention.
Proofs and offprints The corresponding author of each paper will be sent proofs to check and approve. Authors must check their proofs carefully and return them to the publisher within 3 days of receipt by fax and express mail. Major changes to the text will be charged to the author and may delay publication. Fifty free offprints will be supplied to the corresponding author. Additional offprints may be ordered.
Disk Submission Form Submitting your manuscript on disk All manuscripts must be submitted with a copy of the Word file on disk. Please follow these rules when submitting a disk. DO: Be consistent in your presentation and style. Follow the instructions for authors for style points. For example, main headings will be printed in bold so type in bold; follow the referencing style of the journal. The typesetter is looking for consistency to allow for automatic conversion. Use DOUBLE line spacing. Ensure that the disk and hard copy correspond EXACTLY. Turn hyphenation OFF. Enter only one space at the end of a sentence and only one space after any punctuation. Supply both formatted and ASCII files - the latter for use if conversion of formatted files proves difficult. Use filenames of only 8 CHARACTERS OR LESS when saving your work. Label the disk with the book/article title, author name, file names and word processing package used. Fill in the form below. DO NOT: Make a hard return at the end of a line or use justified text. Use lower case 'l' (ell) for 1 (one) or 'O' (capital o) for 0 (zero). These may look interchangeable but they have different electronic values and so they are not. Some authors may wish to submit their figures on disk. Only certain graphics packages are acceptable; authors must check their package with the publisher at an early stage. Please refer to the Instructions for Authors which lists acceptable file formats. When submitting large tables on disk please key in each row as a single row containing no hard returns.
PLEASE COMPLETE AND RETURN THE FORM BELOW WITH YOUR DISK
