Instructions to Authors

Categories

Contributions are in English and are published in the following categories:

  1. Subject Reviews, giving a critical survey of the current state of knowledge in a specific bioengineering field. The material contained in reviews need not be original, but the presentation and treatment should be new. Authors intending to submit reviews are advised to write first to the Editor in Chief with an outline proposal.
  2. Scientific Papers, describing original contributions to the advancement of medical and biological engineering and computing or, for the Cellular Engineering section, cell, molecular or tissue engineering (preferably not exceeding five printed pages).
  3. Communications, which contain original material which has not yet reached the stage of a full Scientific Paper (preferably not exceeding three printed pages).
  4. Technical Notes, which are short accounts of novel techniques, likely to be helpful to others but not meriting a fully-documented paper (preferably not exceeding two printed pages). MBEC is not intended to be a medium for the communication of software practice.
  5. Letters to the Editor, either giving advance reports of important work or commenting on previously published contributions (preferably not exceeding one printed page).

Submissions

Submissions should be sent to the Editor in Chief, and must include all the following:

  • Three copies of the manuscript and illustrations. Illustrations accompanying first submissions need not be suitable for reproduction, but must be clear for the purpose of refereeing. Authors must obtain, and acknowledge, written permission to reproduce any material to which they do not own the copyright.
  • A covering letter stating (a) the category of submission, (b) the number of words in both abstract and main text, and (c) awareness of page charge liability (see below).
  • A completed Certificate of Originality and Publication Agreement and Assignment of Copyright signed by each author. Forms are obtainable from the Editor in Chief or in any of the following electronic formats:

Manuscript

The manuscript should be typed throughout (including abstract, references and figure captions) in double-line spacing on one side of the paper, with wide margins and pages numbered. Headings in the main text must be numbered using the decimal system. Syst鑝e International (SI) units must be used. Vectors, tensors and matrices are printed in bold and this should be indicated on the manuscript. The Harvard (alphabetical) reference system must be used, and only items published or accepted for publication may be cited in the reference list. The manuscript should be organised as follows:

  • Cover page bearing title of paper, authors' names and affiliations, and the name, full postal address, and telephone, fax and email addresses of the corresponding author
  • Abstract, not exceeding 200 words, stating the aims of the work, summarising the data used in the methods, and providing sufficient numerical data to enable a conclusion to be reached
  • Keywords 3-10 keywords which will assist indexers in the cross-referencing of contributions
  • Main text
  • Acknowledgements
  • List of references (including names of all authors)
  • Appendices
  • Tables, each on a separate page, numbered and captioned
  • List of figure captions
  • Figures, each on a separate page and numbered.

Figures

General instructions for the presentation of figures are available in pdf format*.

Additional information

Accepted papers Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, authors will be asked to provide:

  • A copy of the final version on disk, in plain text without any formatting and clearly labelled with the software used.
  • A set of top copy illustrations suitable for direct reproduction, ideally unmounted black-and-white glossy prints. Line drawings may be supplied as laser prints. Labels should be written horizontally (other than axis titles) and in lower-case roman lettering, and should not project beyond the diagram; alternatively unlettered tracings may be supplied together with a copy including lettering.
  • (Subject Reviews and Scientific Papers only) Either a biography (max. 100 words) and black-and-white photograph of one author, or a short piece about all the authors (max. 200 words).

Page charges Contributions should not normally occupy more than five journal pages (one page comprises around 1100 words, six small figures/tables or 40 references). A publication charge of ?0 per page for these pages will be requested from authors whose funding enables them to pay. Contributions occupying more than five pages are subject to a mandatory charge of ?30 per excess page.

Colour printing charges Contributions printed in colour are subject to mandatory charges.

Proofs and offprints Proofs are sent to the corresponding author for checking. Only printer's errors should be corrected; any other alterations may be charged to the author. A free copy of the relevant journal issue is sent to every corresponding author. Fifty free offprints are sent to authors who pay the voluntary publication charge; an order form for further offprints is sent with the proofs.

Copyright Apart from certain exceptions (notably Crown copyright) the copyright of all contributions published in MBEC is vested in the International Federation for Medical & Biological Engineering.

Referees All contributions are submitted to at least two expert referees, and the Editor takes decisions in the light of their reports. Names of referees are never divulged to authors. New referees are always welcome; please write to the Editor in Chief or a member of the Editorial Board.

Authors are invited to suggest up to 3 referees as possible reviewers of their manuscript, noting their expertise for our database.
