About the journal
| Marine Geophysical Researches |
| An International Journal for the Study of the Earth Beneath the Sea |
Marine Geophysical Researches has been a high quality resource for geophysical data in the deep ocean basins for a long time. Over the last ten years the journal has reflected in its contents the intense international efforts focused on understanding the global mid-ocean ridge system.
|
We now wish to announce that in addition to this continuing field of study, Marine Geophysical Researches is encouraging submissions for publication from the margins community. Because of the multi-disciplinary nature of many margin studies we wish to emphasize the broad nature of articles that may be considered for submission. Studies of continental margin geophysics, structure, stratigraphy and sediment deposition processes are sought to broaden the focus of Marine Geophysical Researches into this important avenue of research that is now receiving increased attention in the worldwide marine community. Given the diversity and complexity of processes in the margins and the relative lack of attention to these in the recent past we anticipate major ground breaking advances in this sphere over the next several years. |

| We still encourage submission of papers dealing with new techniques for imaging the deep sea floor and the devlopment of new tools for measuring the physical properties of sedments and rocks in continental and oceanic plate margins, as well as ridge settings. We hope that scientists in these fields find Marine Geophysical Researches a natural home for their work, allowing its wide and timely dissemination to the community at large.
Instructions to Authors
In Marine Geophysical Researches the editorial emphasis is on the description and analysis of structures that can be investigated with geophysical methods only, and on the study of the physical processes that led to the origin of these structures. Papers on new techniques for imaging the sea floor, for example GLORIA, SeaMARC, and Sea Beam, are especially welcome. There is no sharp dividing line between marine geophysics, marine geochemistry, and marine geology, as most marine geophysicists will agree. In most cases, the editors choose to take a broad interpretation so that many areas of marine geology and marine geochemistry may be included in Marine Geophysical Researches, so long as they have some relevance to marine geophysics. In case of doubt whether Marine Geophysical Researches is the most suitable journal for publishing a certain paper, the author is requested to contact one of the two editors.
The language of Marine Geophysical Researches is English. No rules are set for the character of the papers to be published: original research papers, research notes and preliminary papers, papers on instrumentation and methods, discussions and concise cruise reports are all welcome. However short a paper, it should always be accompanied by an abstract, and a short list of keywords.
The original and four copies of the manuscript together with the originals and five sets of copies of the figures should be submitted for review purposes to the Editorial Office (address below). The submission should include 5 copies of any coloured figures, in colour. Both English and American spelling are accepted, but spelling should be consistent throughout one paper.
Authors of state-of-the-art review articles receive a free 3-year personal subscription to Marine Geophysical Researches.
Tables
Please number tables with Roman numerals and give them a short title.
Figures
All photographs, graphs, and diagrams, should be referred to as ’Figure‘ (not to be abbreviated in the text) and should be numbered consecutively. Give a detailed caption to each figure, refer to it in the text and note approximate location in the margin. All captions should be on a separate sheet. Text figures should be on glossy photographs if possible and attention should be paid to the size of the letters and symbols. Reasonable reduction should remain possible, notwithstanding the possibility of having foldouts (see below).
Formulas
Should be type-written if possible. Subscripts and superscripts should be indicated clearly as such. As a decimal sign we prefer the full stop; crosses should be reserved for multiplications. In the manuscript vectors are to be indicated by wavy underlining. Please make a clear distinction between the letter ’o‘ and the zero symbol, the number ’1‘ and the letter ’l‘, κ and k, μ and u, ν and v, η and n, etc. Unusual signs should be identified in the margin. Note that letters used as symbols will be set in italics unless otherwise indicated.
Units
All scientific and technical data should be stated in SI units, except in unavoidable circumstances.
Footnotes should be avoided.
References
References should be given at the end of the paper in alphabetical and chronological order, in this way:
Hilde, T.W.C., 1983, Sediment Subduction versus Accretion Around the Pacific, Tectonophysics 99, 381-397.
Wyss, M., Haberman, R.E., and Griesser, J.C., 1984, Seismic Quiescence and Aperites in the Tonga-Kermadec Arc, J. Geophys. Res. 89, 9293-9304.
The name of the journal (abbreviated according to the system used by the International Astronomical Union and the American Institute of Physics, e.g. Marine Geophys. Res.), and the names of books should be underlined; the volume number should have wavy underlining. In the text the literature is referred to by the name of the author and the year of publication, e.g. ’Wyss et al. (1984)‘, when forming a part of a sentence, or ’(Wyss et al., 1984)‘ when forming an addition to a sentence, between parentheses. If a paper has three or more authors, it is referred to by the name of the first author and the abbreviation ’et al.‘.
Italics are to be indicated by single underlining; boldface by wavy underlining.
Offprints
25 offprints of each article are supplied free of charge. Additional offprints may be ordered.
No page charges are levied on authors or institutions. However, foldouts or illustrations in colour must be paid for by the author. A range of foldouts and colour illustrations is available. Colour work ranges from full-colour halftones (most expensive) to two-colour (black plus one other colour) line figures (generally most economical). The costs of foldouts depend on the number and variety of folds. The publisher will provide a price quotation on receipt of a detailed specification.
