MAMMALIAN BIOLOGY
Mammalian Biology ( formerly Zeitschrift f黵 S鋟getierkunde) is an international scientific journal edited by the Deutsche Gesellschaft f黵 S鋟getierkunde (German Society for Mammalogy). The journal is devoted to the publication of research on mammals. Its scope covers all aspects of mammalian biology, such as anatomy, morphology, palaeontology, taxonomy, systematics, molecular biology, physiology, neurobiology, ethology, genetics, reproduction, development, evolutionary biology, domestication, ecology, faunistics, wildlife biology, conservation biology, and the biology of zoo mammals. To qualify for publication, a manuscript must contribute to the understanding of mammalian biology by presenting either new and original research data (as a full article or in short communication format) or a thorough review of a particular topic of mammalogical research. Investigations using mammals merely as models or emphasizing experimental or veterinary aspects are of interest if they are of substantial relevance to mammalogists |

| . Contributions may be written in German or English. In view of the international readership of the journal English is preferred. At present, one volume consisting of six issues is published each year. Due to its wide range of topics, Mammalian Biology is primarily of interest to scientists working on the listed various fields of mammalogy but also for biologists and zoologists in general as well as to veterinarians and medical scientists.
Instructions to Authors
Submission and acceptance of manuscripts: Manuscripts for publication should be sent to the managing editor, Prof. Dr. D. Kruska, Institut f黵 Haustierkunde, Christian-Albrechts-Universit鋞, Olshausenstr. 40-60, D-24118 Kiel, Germany (e-mail: dkruska@ifh.uni-kiel.de). Acceptance of the manuscript follows the bylaws of the German Society for Mammalogy (Deutsche Gesellschaft f黵 S鋟getierkunde). Receipt of the manuscript will be confirmed immediately by normal mail or e-mail, and as soon as the peer reviews are received the authors will be informed concerning any decision. All correspondence dealing with details of production should be sent to: Mammalian Biology, Urban & Fischer Verlag, L鯾dergraben 14a, D-07743 Jena, Germany (e-mail: e.czauderna@urbanfischer.de)
Form of the Manuscript: Each manuscript must be submitted in triplicate, one original and two copies, in English or German in A4 format (21 x 30 cm) or correspondingly either from a typewriter or legible computer print with a left-hand margin of 4 cm and true double spacing. Pages must be numbered. Script type should be uniform throughout the manuscript. Use of bold print, italics and spaced-letters must be avoided. Page footnotes and appendices at the end of the text are not allowed. Authors should indicate in the margins the approximate location in the text for illustrations and tables. At the end of the manuscript following References, the exact postal address(es) of the author(s) should be given and the e-mail address of the senior author only. The first page of the manuscript should contain the following information:
1. title (in case of a long title, a running title not exceeding 72 characters must additionally be provided)
2. name(s) of author(s): full first name(s) for all authors (an excessively large number of co-authors should be avoided).
3. department(s), university affiliation(s), city and country
Content of the manuscript: Manuscripts can be published as original investigations, short communications or reviews.
a) Original investigations: In addition to the text, original investigations should include illustrations, tables and references, and must not exceed 30 typewritten pages. The text should be divided into: Abstract (in English), Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion (or together as Results and Discussion), Acknowledgements, Zusammenfassung (in German), References. In English manuscripts a German title must precede the Zusammenfassung; in German manuscripts an English title must precede the Abstract.
b) Short communications: Short communications must not exceed 10 typewritten pages and do not require either an Abstract or Summary. They also should not be headed with subtitles into Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion but should be organized according to this form. A German title must be added to an English, an English to a German manuscript.
c) Reviews: Manuscripts that review and integrate the current state of knowledge in a special field of mammalian biology are also welcome. They must not exceed 50 typewritten pages. The text must provide Abstract (in English), Introduction, special headings depending on the theme, Acknowledgements, Zusammenfassung (in German), References. A German title must precede the Zusammenfassung in English manuscripts and vice versa an English title must precede the Abstract in German manuscripts.
Key words: Up to 5 informative key words, starting with the taxonomic unit(s), must be given following the Abstract or at the beginning of the text in Short communications.
Illustrations: Number and size of illustrations must be kept to an absolute minimum. Only well focused and readily reproducible original prints showing optimal contrast can be accepted; colour plates cannot be processed. Labelling on figures should be uniform, printed in a sans-serif font like Arial or Helvetica, and large and clear enough for eventual reduction in size. On the back of each illustration the following information should be given, using a soft pencil: figure number, name of the journal, first author. Captions to figures must be written on a separate sheet of paper.
Tables: The number and size of tables must be reduced to a minimum. Each table should appear on a separate page including heading and running number. Comprehensive tables not fitting onto one page should follow on consecutive sheets.
References: Each study cited in the text must appear in alphabetical order at the end of the text. Only internationally available literature and citations from peer reviewed journals must be quoted. The names of the journals should be given in abbreviated form in conformity to international use. Examples:
a) From journals: KALKO, E. K. V.; HANDLEY, C. O. Jr. (1994): Evolution, biogeography, and description of a new species of fruit-eating bats, genus Artibeus Leach (1821), from Panama. Z. S鋟getierkunde 59, 257-273.
b) From books: HERRE, W.; R諬RS, M. (1990): Haustiere - zoologisch gesehen. 2. Aufl. Stuttgart, New York: Gustav Fischer.
c) From reference books: NIETHAMMER, J. (1982): Cricetus cricetus (Linnaeus, 1758) - Hamster (Feldhamster). In: Handbuch der S鋟getiere Europas. Ed. By J. NIETHAMMER and F. KRAPP. Wiesbaden: Akad. Verlagsges. Vol. 2/I, 7-28
Printing: After acceptance authors may additionally provide the manuscript also as text file on disk together and identical with the final submitted version. The principal author will receive page proofs of the manuscript as well as a set of the illustrations and the original manuscript for proof reading. Only type-setting errors should be corrected. Any major revision undertaken by the author at this stage will result in costs to the authors themselves. The conventional proof-readers?symbols should be used. The corrected page proofs should be signed by the author to indicate that the manuscript is "ready for print" and be sent to Prof. Dr. Peter Langer, Institut f黵 Anatomie und Zellbiologie, Justus-Liebig-Universit鋞 Giessen, Aulweg 123, D-35385 Giessen, Germany (e-mail: peter.langer@anatomie.med.uni-giessen.de)
Reprints: 50 reprints of each paper are supplied free of charge. When returning the page proofs additional reprints can be ordered at the cost of the author(s).
