About the journal

Mammal Review

Mammal Review is the official scientific periodical of The Mammal Society. The journal has a broad scope and covers all aspects of mammalian biology and ecology. The Editor will particularly welcome analytical reviews of current theoretical and applied research on mammals, practical assessments of techniques for studying mammals and large-scale considerations of the status, conservation and management of mammals.

Mammal Review

Mammal Review is primarily a review journal. Review papers are regularly invited by the

Editorial Board and will be treated as priority contributions. Authors are invited to consult

any member of the Board about potential topics for these invited contributions. Unsolicited

review papers are welcome. Short papers of no more than six published pages that describe

original work are also welcome. Exceptionally, original research may be published when on

a particularly timely and important topic but authors of such work should consult the Editor

prior to submission. The journal is also the primary place of publication for the scientific

work of The Mammal Society. Work that is entirely or mostly published elsewhere will not

be accepted.

Mammal Review is intended for a wide international readership, both amateur and professional. Contributors are therefore urged to present their subject matter in simple, lucid and concise terms. Review papers are necessarily variable in length, but should be concisely written. As a guideline, few reviews should be longer than 15000 words including references and tables. Short papers should be no more than six published pages, approximately 2500 words. All papers, including electronic versions, must be prepared on A4 or Letter pages, double spaced throughout, with margins of 25mm, with text set in 12 point Times New Roman. Tables and the legends to figures should be typed separately and attached to the end of the manuscript. Footnotes should be avoided. There are no fixed rules for ordering the text because these will vary with the aim of the paper, but the following are required for all papers.

Title page

The title should appear on a separate sheet, together with the name and address of all authors. The correspondence author should be clearly identified and should give an email address. The title should be concise and informative and a running title of four or five words should be given. The total word count including all text, references, tables, etc. should also be provided.

Abstract page

The title and list of authors?names, but not addresses, should be repeated at the top of the second page. A concise, informative abstract should be provided for all papers, including short papers. The abstract should not exceed 300 words for normal reviews and 100 words for short papers. It should be laid out in numbered bullet-points and be intelligible without reference to the main body of the paper. Up to six keywords, which will be used for online search facilities, should be given after the abstract in alphabetical order. Do not repeat words used in the title.

Conventions

All scientific names should be italicized. Names of families, orders etc. are not italicized. Normal, lower case typescript should be used for common names. Exceptionally, consideration of a taxonomic subject may require capitalization of vernacular names. Numbers should be spelt out up to nine where they are used to qualify an object; otherwise, and for numbers above nine, they should be given as numerals. Units of measurement may be spelt in full, or spelt in full on the first usage and then consistently abbreviated.

References

All cited sources should be listed at the end of the manuscript, before figures and tables, and be ordered alphabetically by author. For joint authors ?amp;?should be used in both text and references. For three authors, names should be spelt out in full at the first mention and thereafter the first name and et al. should be used. Where more than three authors are responsible use et al. in the text but give all the authors in the references. Reference to papers in the text should be as (Jones, 1972) or 慗ones (1972) said . . .?Where more than one reference by the same author(s) appeared in the same year, use ?972a,b?in both text and references. Titles of periodical publications should be given in full (not abbreviated). Titles of papers and books cited must be given, together with volume number and full pagination for papers, and the publisher and place of publication for books. Titles in languages not using Roman script may be given in translation or transliteration. Authors are requested to check their reference list against their text to ensure that all authors cited are included and that dates and spellings are consistent. Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the references quoted, and they should be very careful to check that the references are spelt exactly as they were published. Style should follow that used in the journal.

Figures

Illustrations, including maps and graphs, should normally be generated electronically. Further details are available on the publisher's website at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp

Otherwise, only high quality drawings will be acceptable for reproduction. Originals may be of any reasonable size, although the dimensions of the printed page (205 mm x 130 mm) should be kept in mind. Scales, where appropriate, should be included in the drawing wherever possible. Photographs and drawings should be kept to the minimum required for completeness. The figure number, paper title and author(s) should be clearly indicated on the reverse of illustrations, together with any specific instructions to the printer, e.g. on reduction. Where possible, related diagrams should be grouped together and prepared to the same scale. Where they are drawn on separate sheets but are intended to appear grouped, a rough diagram indicating the desired arrangement should be provided. Ideal placement of the figure in the manuscript should be noted in the margin.

It is the policy of Mammal Review for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of any colour figures. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_X_CoW.pdf

If you are unable to download the form, please contact Penny Baker (at the address below), who will email or FAX a form to you.

Once completed, please return the form to:

Submission

All papers should be submitted in the first instance to the Editor. Thereafter, the Editor or a member of the Editorial Board may continue the correspondence. Papers should preferably be submitted by email or alternatively by post. For email submissions the following rules apply: All elements of the paper, including tables and figures, must be contained in a single file in a recent version of Microsoft Word (.doc), rich text (.rtf) or in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf). Zipped files, WordPerfect or other file formats will not be accepted. All files should be formatted to minimize the amount of memory used and to facilitate transmission by email. No files larger than 1Mb will be acceptable except by prior arrangement with the Editor. Graphics can usually be compressed using standard software before being pasted into documents as pictures or .jpg rather than .tif or .bmp. Higher resolution graphics can be submitted after acceptance. The title of the file should consist of the correspondence author抯 surname and one or two keywords. Electronic submissions should be sent to rmcdonald@gct.org.uk. If submitting by post, please send three identical copies to Dr Robbie McDonald, The Game Conservancy Trust, Forest-in-Teesdale, Barnard Castle DL12 0HA, UK.

Copyright

Authors will be required to assign copyright in their paper to Mammal Review. Copyright assignment is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been assigned. (Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement). To assist authors the editorial office will supply an appropriate copyright assignment form. Alternatively authors may like to download a copy of the form from http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/MAM_CAF.pdf

Disks

A disk copy and two paper copies of the manuscript should be provided when the paper has been accepted for publication. The paper copies and the file on disk must be identical. The software used, the type of computer, and any special (non-keyboard) characters used should be noted on a form that will be supplied. Save figures on disk in as many different formats as are available to you, preferably.eps or .tif. Always enclose hard copies of figures. Disks will not be returned to authors.

A File Description Form must be completed for all electronic submission of manuscripts.

Proofs

Manuscripts should be carefully checked before submission to avoid the necessity of extensive corrections to the proofs. Page proofs will be sent to the correspondence author by email as .pdf files. The corrected proof must be returned directly to the Production Editor. If no response is received it will be assumed that the author had no comments or corrections. Revised page proofs will not be sent to the authors, except at the Editor抯 discretion.

Offprints

Authors of papers are entitled to 25 free offprints. Further copies may be purchased using order forms supplied with the proofs.
