Preparation of manuscripts

In general, papers should not exceed 15 pages of text. They must be written in English. They must be typed double spaced— with wide margins and on one side of the page only and submitted in triplicate. All pages, beginning with the title page, must be numbered consecutively throughout. Tables, figure captions and other appended materials must be typed on separate sheets. Both the form and content of manuscripts should be carefully checked to avoid the need for corrections in proof, a charge will be made for changes introduced after an article has been set in type. It would be useful if the authors would submit the names, telephone and fax numbers, end addresses of three to five referees who might review the manuscript.

The journal strongly encourages authors to submit electronically prepared manuscripts in WordPerfect 5.1, MicroSoft Word (Macintosh) or MicroSoft Word (PC). Follow the instructions set forth here exactly; if, for example, the reference section is incorrectly styled, the value of the diskette submission will be reduced. A double-spaced hard copy of the manuscript must accompany the software.

Title page. The first page of a manuscript must contain (1) a concise, informative title, (2) the name(s) of the author(s); (3) institutional affiliation(s); (4) address to which proofs should be sent; (5) address to which offprint requests should be sent; (6) footnotes to the title; (7) a short running head of title (maximum of 5 words).

Abstract. Each article must include an abstract no longer than 250 words which states objectives findings and conclusions from observations.

Key words. Each paper must be accompanied by a list of up to five key words taken from the Medical Subject Headings of Index Medicus or composed along the principles used by this index.

Footnotes. Authors should try to avoid including footnotes to the text. If they are necessary, they should be numbered consecutively and typed on a separate page at the end of the text.

References. Citations in the text should be identified by numbers in brackets, and the list of references at the end of the paper should be both alphabetized under the first author's name and enumerated. Theorist can include only works referred to in the text, and references to the same author or team of authors should be listed in chronological order. Abbreviations of journal names should follow the forms in Index Medicus.

Journal articles
Farber HW, Fairman RP, Glauser FL (19B2) Talc granulomatosis: laboratory findings similar to sarcoidosis. Am Rev Respir Dis 114:525-528

Books
Batenburg JJ, Van Golde LMG (1979) Formation of pulmonary surfactant in whole lung and in isolated type 11 alveolar cells. In: Scarpelli EM, Cosmi EV (eds) Reviews in Perinatal Medicine, vol 3. Raven Press, New York, pp 73-114

Tables. Each table should be on a separate page, typed double spaced with the number and title at the top. Do no use vertical lines. Footnotes to tables should appear directly below the table to which they belong.

Illustrations. All figures must be essential to the clarity of the paper, and their number should be kept to a minimum. Be sure that all details are large enough to maintain their clarity after a substantial reduction in size. Submit two unmounted copies of each illustration, identifying them with a label on the back which indicates the number, author's name and the top. Line drawings should be professionally drafted and photographed, halftones should exhibit high contrast. A linear size scale should be incorporated into photomicrographs. Figure captions must be typed on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. Color figures will be printed at the author's expense: $1150.00 for the first page and $575.00 for each additional page within the same article.
Proof and Reprints. Proofs and a reprint order form are sent to the first author unless the Editorial Office is advised otherwise. A charge will be made for changes introduced after the manuscript has been set in type. Reprints may be ordered at cost at the time proofs are corrected and returned.

Abbreviations. The first time an uncommon abbreviation appears it should be preceded by the full name for which it stands. Use the standard abbreviations listed in the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual (Fifth edition, Council of Biology Editors: Bethesda, MD, 1983).

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for Print

General

Send illustrations separately from the text (i.e. files should not be integrated with the text files). Always send printouts of all illustrations.

Vector (line) Graphics

Vector graphics exported from a drawing program should be stored in EPS format.

Suitable drawing program: Adobe Illustrator. For simple line art the following drawing programs are also acceptable: Corel Draw, Freehand, Canvas.

No rules narrower than .25 pt.

No gray screens paler than 15% or darker than 60%.

Screens meant to be differentiated from one another must differ by at least 15%.

Spreadsheet/Presentation Graphics

Most presentation programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Freelance) produce data that cannot be stored in an EPS format. Therefore graphics produced by these programs cannot be used for print.

Halftone Illustrations

Black & white and color illustrations should be saved in TIFF format.

Illustrations should be created using Adobe Photoshop whenever possible.

Scans*

Scanned reproductions of black and white photographs should be provided as 300 ppi TIFF files.

Scanned color illustrations should be provided as TIFF files scanned at a minimum of 300 ppi with a 24-bit color depth.

Line art should be provided as TIFF files at 600 ppi.

* We do prefer having the original art as our printers have drum scanners which allow for better reproduction of critical medical halftones.

Graphics from Videos

Separate files should be prepared for frames from a video that are to be printed in the journal. When preparing these files you should follow the same rules as listed under Halftone Illustrations.

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for ONLIN

Video

Quicktime (.mov) is the preferred format, but .rm, .avi, .mpg, etc. are acceptable.

No video file should be larger than 2MB. To decrease the size of your file, consider changing one or more of the following variables: frame speed, number of colors/greys, viewing size (in pixels), or compression. Video is subject to Editorial review and approval.
