Instructions to Authors
2. Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be sent to one of the Editors (see under 'Editorial Contacts'), or to the Editor-in-Chief:
Professor Dr. Wilfried Westheide Universit鋞 Osnabr點k FB Biologie/Chemie, AG Spezielle Zoologie Barbarastr 11 49069 Osnabr點k, Germany E-mail: Wilfried.Westheide@biologie.uni-osnabrueck.de (responsible for: Invertebrates, without Arthropods)
2.1. Electronic submission
Please submit your paper electronically via email as one complete file comprising a title page, abstract, text, second summary (see 3.1), references, tables, and figure legends and electronic files of the figures. For simplicity and to make the reviewing process easier, a PDF file should be sent with the figures included. Please send also a separate abstract file with full heading. When preparing your text file, please use only standard fonts such as Times, Times New Roman or Arial for text (12 point; 1,5 spacing), and Symbol font for Greek letters, to avoid inadvertent character substitutions. In particular, do not use Japanese or other Asian fonts. Please use line numbers to facilitate identifying the reviewer's comments.
After receipt of your contribution there will be a review process. In order to facilitate this process, the names and (email) addresses of about 4 potential referees should be mentioned in your cover email. The editors can require a revision of the manuscript according to the proposals of the referees. The Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision on the acceptance for publication.
Upon acceptance of your manuscript for publication, you will be required to supply your final manuscript and figures electronically by E-mail back to the Editor or, if the data files are too large, via ftp site. The figures of the final accepted manuscript must be high-resolution (see 3.3).
2.2. Submission via ftp site
To access the production FTP site, please click on the following links: ftp.edn.blackwellpublishing.com or if this does not work, please try ftp://212.240.95.51 instead. When prompted, please enter the following login ID and password: login ID: Author-access password: bpl2000pub (BPL but in lower case, not bp1)
This will then present a list of folders - please double-click on the folder called 'Journals'. You will then be presented by a list of folders for all the journals we publish in the Edinburgh office. Please choose the folder called 'JZS' and double-click on the folder to open it. You can then transfer files from your own directory to the JZS folder.
Once you have transferred your files to the JZS folder on the FTP site, please send email notification to the Editor so he can confirm that your files have arrived safely. If you should have any queries or concerns regarding the FTP site, please contact the Production Editor at jzs@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com.
2.3. Supplementary Material
Supplementary Material, such as data sets or additional figures or tables, that will not be published in the print edition of the journal, but which will be viewable via the online edition, can be submitted. Small video clips can also be submitted.
It should be clearly stated at the time of submission that the Supplementary Material is intended to be made available through the online edition. If the size or format of the Supplementary Material is such that it cannot be accommodated on the journal's Web site, the author agrees to make the Supplementary Material available free of charge on a permanent Web site, to which links will be set up from the journal's Web site. The author must advise Blackwell Publishing if the URL of the Web site where the Supplementary Material is located changes. The content of the Supplementary Material must not be altered after the paper has been accepted for publication.
The availability of Supplementary Material should be indicated in the main manuscript by a paragraph, to appear after the References, headed "Supplementary Material" and providing titles of figures, tables, etc. In order to protect reviewer anonymity, material posted on the authors Web site cannot be reviewed. The Supplementary Material is an integral part of the article and will be reviewed accordingly.
2.4. Exclusive Licence Form and Colour Work Agreement
It is essential that authors return a signed copy of the Exclusive Licence Form to the Editor-in-Chief. Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement. A completed Colour Work Agreement form must also be returned with the revised manuscript if it contains colour. Failure to return the forms will delay the publication of manuscripts.
3. Manuscript requirements
3.1. Format and structure of manuscripts
Manuscripts have to be submitted typewritten on one side with ?60 characters in 30 lines preferably on DIN A 4-paper, 1,5 spacing, with a wide margin.
The heading of the manuscript must contain the institute(s), title, and the name(s) of the author(s). The text should be divided into the following eight sections: English-language abstract, introduction, material and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, second summary, and references. Each manuscript must have an abstract in English. After the section "Acknowledgements" there should be a second summary in French, German, Italian or Spanish headed by an appropriate translation of the title of the paper. Please don't forget the addresses and e-mail addresses of all contributing authors at the end of the manuscript.
Authors are encouraged to visit the Blackwell Publishing website for authors which details further information on the preparation and submission of articles and figures and gives access to the Blackwell house style guide.
3.2. Units, abbreviations and nomenclature
The S.I. System is relevant to measures. All biological and chemical names, or other technical terms, should be given according to the most recent international nomenclature. Authorities should be mentioned only once when the name appears in the text for the first time. It is not necessary to mention authorities in the title or summaries, unless the article is specifically taxonomic. Where commercially available substances, reagents, or equipment are used, the manufacturer's name and address (city and country is sufficient) should be provided in the "material and methods" section, along with the generally accepted common name.
Scientific botanical and zoological species names, as well as Latin terminology such as in vitro, in vivo, de novo etc., will be printed in italics. They should either be typed as such, or underlined with a single straight line. Unless there is risk of ambiguity, names of species can be abbreviated on being mentioned a second time and thereafter throughout the text, thus, Heterobasidion annosum would become H. annosum.
3.3. Tables and Figures
Documentation of the same results in tables and diagrams is inadmissible. It is essential that text and image files be kept separate. Please mark the position of tables/figures in the text. Each figure and table must have a reference in the text.
Tables should be created using the table function in MS Word or the tabulator in other programmes.
Black and white images should be supplied as 'grayscale'. Multipart figures should be supplied in the final layout in one file. Lettering on the figures should be of good quality and of a size that allows reduction of the figures.
Colour photos can be reproduced in black and white (with a possible loss of contrast). Figures printed in colour are subject to an additional charge. A single figure in colour costs ?50 plus VAT. Second, third and fourth figures cost ?0 each plus VAT. For additional prices please contact the publisher. Colour print charges are explained on the Colour Work Agreement form which can be downloaded from www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/SN_Sub2000_X_CoW.pdf. Colour graphics should be created using the CMYK colour palette (print colours), not RGB (monitor colours). There is a charge for alterations to figures when carried out by the publisher.
Preparation of electronic artwork for publication Although low quality images are adequate for review purposes, print publication requires high quality images to prevent the final product being blurred or fuzzy. Submit EPS (lineart) or TIFF (halftone/photographs) files only. MS PowerPoint and Word Graphics are unsuitable. Do not use pixel-oriented programmes. Scans (TIFF only) should have a resolution of 400 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size (see below). Please submit the data for figures in black and white.
Motif and scale (e.g. of microscopic photographs) should be appropriate to the reproduction size. Line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (photo, shades of grey). Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible.
Graphs with an x- and y-axis should not be enclosed in frames; only 2-dimensional representations are possible. Do not forget the labels and units. Captions for the figures should give a precise description of the content and should not be repeated within the figure. EPS files should be saved with fonts embedded (and with a TIFF preview if possible)
Scanned Images For scanned images, the scanning resolution (at final image size) should be as follows to ensure adequate reproduction: lineart: >800 dpi; half-tones (including gel photographs): >300 dpi; figures containing both halftone and line images: >600 dpi.
|
Example: A photographic image that is three inches (76.2 mm) across at final size should be saved as TIFF with a width of 900 pixels (final size: 3 in; resolution: 300 dpi). A combination image of a photograph and labelling that is three inches across at final size should be saved as either (i) a TIFF with a width of 1800 pixels (final size: 3 inch; resolution: 600 dpi), or (ii) an EPS containing an embedded TIFF at 900 pixels wide (final size: 3 inch; resolution: 300 dpi). |
To facilitate production of quality artwork, we recommend that authors generate their artwork in software packages incorporating a 'SAVE AS' or 'EXPORT' TIFF/EPS function, e.g.: Adobe Illustrator 7.0 and above (EPS), Adobe Illustrator 9.0 (EPS, but can also export files as TIFF), Deneba Canvas 6.0 and above (EPS), CorelDRAW 7.0 and above (EPS), Adobe Photoshop 4.0 and above (TIFF). You can EXPORT low resolution figs (GIF/JPG) from these packages for review purposes. EPS files can be produced from other applications (e.g. PowerPoint) but results can be unpredictable (e.g. fonts and shading not converted correctly, lines missing, dotted lines becoming solid). All scanned images embedded into other applications should be scanned at the recommended resolutions (see above).
Detailed information on digital illustration standards is available at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/illustration.asp
Check your electronic artwork before submitting it: www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/eachecklist.asp
3.4. References
The list of references should only include publications cited in the text. Literature will be quoted in the text with the year of publication, e.g. Mayr and Bock (2002) or (Mayr and Bock 2002). If more than one reference is quoted in the text, separate them by a semicolon, e.g. (Borkin 1999; Mayr and Bock 2000). If the same author is quoted with more than one source of the same year, mark them with a, b, etc. (e.g. Bock 2000a).
The references have to be entered alphabetically, and must include the name(s) and initials of the author(s), year of publication in parenthesis, title of paper, name of journal (abbreviated according to international rules, without dots), volume number, page numbers.
References to books must include surname(s) and initials of author(s), year of publication in parenthesis, complete title of the book edition, publisher, place of publication, page numbers.
Examples: Journals: Larsen K, Wilson GDF (2002) Tanaidacean phylogeny, the first step: the superfamily Paratanaidoidea. J Zool Syst Evol Res 40:205-222.
Books: Borkin LJ (1999) Distribution of amphibians in North Africa, Europe, Western Asia, and the former Soviet Union. In: Dulleman WE (ed), Pattern of Distribution of Amphibians: Global Perspective. John Hopkins University Press, Baltimore and London, pp 329-420.
4. Copyright
Authors are no longer required to assign copyright in their paper. Instead authors are required to assign the exclusive licence to publish their paper to Blackwell Verlag and the Journal of Zoological Systematics and Evolutionary Research. Assignment of the exclusive licence is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless licence has been assigned. (Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement). Please download the Exclusive Licence Form from www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/JZS_ELF.pdf.
5. Proof correction and offprints
Proofs will be sent via E-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file to the corresponding author, which should be reviewed, countersigned and returned without delay to the Editor-in-Chief. The E-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site: www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Author's corrections are limited to typesetting errors. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no E-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your E-mail to retrieve the proofs. If the proofs are not returned to the publisher after an established grace period, the publisher will assume that the article can be published unchanged.
Authors will be provided with the electronic offprints of their paper, made available as a PDF file. Paper offprints may be ordered at prices quoted on the order form, which accompanies proofs, provided that the form is returned with the proofs. The cost is more if the order form arrives too late for the main print run. Offprints are normally dispatched within three weeks of publication of the issue in which the paper appears. Please contact the publishers if offprints do not arrive: however please note that paper offprints are sent by surface mail, so overseas orders may take up to six weeks to arrive. Electronic offprints are sent to the first author at his or her first email address on the title page of the paper, unless advised otherwise; therefore please ensure that the name, address and email of the receiving author are clearly indicated on the manuscript title page if he or she is not the first author of the paper.
6. Author Services
NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services. Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
7. Author material archive policy
Please note that unless specifically requested, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted two months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.
