About the journal

 

The Journal of Viral Hepatitis is a bimonthly journal, publishing reviews, original work (full papers) and short rapid communications in the area of viral hepatitis. It brings together in a single journal important issues in this rapidly expanding speciality. The Journal includes articles from:

  • epidemiologists;
  • clinicians;
  • pathologists;
  • virologists;
  • specialists in transfusion medicine

Instructions to Authors

 

Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://jvh.manuscriptcentral.com. All parts of the manuscript are needed in an electronic format (including figures). A user ID and password can be created at the site. Format the manuscript as described below and, where possible, combine multiple files into a single document. Microsoft Word, rich text format (RTF) and PostScript files and any embedded images will automatically be converted to PDF on upload.

If you cannot sumbit your manuscript online, you should send three copies of the typescript and an electronic copy on disk to: The Editor, Professor Howard Thomas, Editorial Office, Department of Medicine, St Mary's Medical School, London, W2 2PG, UK; e-mail: a.e.omahony@virgin.net

A covering letter must be included with any submission acknowledging and stating on behalf of all the authors that the work has not been published and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

Sending your manuscript in this manner will delay the reviewing process as the Editorial Assistant works on a part time basis from hone and picks up manuscripts from the office on a monthly basis.

 

Manuscript Style

The manuscript should be sized for A4 paper, double-spaced and with ample margins. It should consist of the following sections.

Title Page

This should contain a concise title of the article, a shortened version (no more than 50 characters including spaces) for the running head, names of the authors, their affiliations, and the full postal and e-mail address, fax and telephone number of an author to whom correspondence can be addressed.

Summary

This should be on a separate page, and less than 250 words. It should be followed by up to 6 key words for indexing purposes.

Main Text

This should start on a separate page, and include: an introduction, methods, results and discussion. Figures can be inserted into the text, added to the end of the file (recommended) or uploaded separately.  Authors should avoid abbreviations (except for those commonly understood), long sentences, and many juxtaposed numbers in sentences.

Copyright

All papers submitted to JVH are accepted on the understanding that they have not been and will not be published elsewhere.  Please send a signed copyright form to the Editor when you submit your paper fo publication.  The form can be printed off and completed.  If your paper is not accepted for publication this form will be destroyed and copyright reverts back to the author. We cannot publish your paper without receiving the copyright form.

References

These should be in the Vancouver style, i.e. numbered throughout the text in consecutive order using Arabic numerals in parentheses. The references should be listed in numerical order at the end of the paper using the following styles. List all authors when six or less and list the first three followed by et al. when there are more than six. Unpublished work should only be cited in the text. Only references genuinely in press should be listed in the reference list. Examples of References:

Illustrations

These should be referred to in the text as figures using Arabic numbers, e.g. Fig.1, Fig. 2, etc., in order of appearance. Figures incorporated or uploaded with a file as part of an electronic submission should be suitable for review purposes (GIF, JPEG, TIFF, EPS). Hardcopy figures supplied with a final accepted manuscript should be marked on the back with its appropriate number, together with the name(s) of the author(s) and the title of the paper.  Where there is doubt as to the orientation of an illustration the top should be marked with an arrow.

Photographs and photomicrographs should be unmounted glossy prints and should not be retouched. Labelling should be clearly indicated on an overlay or photocopy. Line drawings should be on separate sheets of white paper in black indelible ink (dot matrix illustrations are not permitted); lettering should be on an overlay or photocopy and should be no less than 4mm high for 50% reduction.

Each figure should have a legend clearly describing it; these legends should be grouped on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.

Please send us digital versions of your figures. High quality electronic figiures sent with an accepted manuscript should be saved in their native format and as either EPS (line art) or TIFF (photographs). Always enclose a hard copy of the figures for comparision purposes. Line art images embedded into word processor documents may also be used if they are of sufficient quality for final publication. Colour illustrations are acceptable when found necessary by the Editor and a charge will be made. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. Tables

These should include only essential data. Each table must be on a separate sheet and should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals e.g. Table 1, and given a short caption.

Acknowledgements

These should be brief and must include references to sources of financial and logistical support.

Units

Measurements must be in SI units and authors should use negative indices, e.g. mg h-1. Units, Symbols and Abbreviations (Royal Society of Medicine, 1988) is a useful guide.

Disks

These should be IBM-compatible. An accurate hard copy must accompany each disk, together with details of the type of computer used, the software employed, and the disk system if known. Do not justify. Particular attention should be taken to ensure that any articles submitted in this form adhere exactly to the journal style in all respects. Further details can be obtained from the Publisher. Disks will not be returned to the authors.

Page Proofs

These must be returned to the Production Editor within 3 days of receipt, ideally by fax: Edinburgh (+44 (0) 131 226 3803). Only typographical errors and other essential small changes can be made at this stage. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.

Reprints

Offprints of articles may be ordered at the proof stage
