Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts
The typical length of papers is between 5 and 10 pages of the Journal (3000 to 6000 words), but longer papers are acceptable when this is needed for a proper presentation of the material. Submissions must be in duplicate, double-spaced throughout, on one side only of A4 paper, with left and right margins of at least 4 cm. Authors should submit the article on 3.5” IBM-format disk in addition to the hard copies using any appropriate word processing package (MS Word 6.0, Word Perfect 5.1, or Text Only are preferred). When possible, illustrations should also be supplied on disk, preferably as a separate file from the text. Disks should be clearly marked with the name(s) of the authors(s) and the file name, together with the version of the software being used.
Mathematical Formulae
Mathematical formulae should be produced in a single-line form by the use of brackets and the slash (solidus) and rendering of exponentials in the form exp (argument). Authors should prepare mathematics with this in mind, so as to reduce possible error in transcription. The use of Greek characters should be kept to a minimum. Mathematics should be typed wherever possible; otherwise it should be neatly and unambiguously hand-written with marginal notes to avoid possible confusion. The order of nesting brackets will be [{()}].
Symbols and Abbreviations
Use of symbols and abbreviations must in general conform with that of ISO 31: Specification for Quantities, Units and Symbols.
Units
SI units must be used, or at least given as equivalents. Whenever traditional units of yarn count are quoted, the equivalent in tex must also be given in parentheses.
Abstract
An abstract must be provided for each paper submitted. The abstract will precede the main text of the paper and draw attention to its salient points.
Illustrations
All images that appear in the paper must also be supplied separately on disk or CD, and must be saved in .tif or .jpeg format . A complete set of photocopies of illustrations must be provided. All required lettering and labelling should be included on the original illustrations. Photomicrographs should contain scale bars. Illustrations will be used as provided and must be designed to be accommodated within the page area without reduction: this is 128 mm wide by 200 mm deep.
Tables
Results represented in diagrammatic form should not also be given in the form of tables. Column headings should be kept to a minimum. If a brief heading is not possible, a number or letter may be used and an explanatory note given at the foot of the table. Roman numerals are used in numbering tables (e.g. Table IV).
References
The Harverd reference style (name and date) should be used. In the text references are given as, for example, Stewart (1995), Brown and White (1983), Wang et al. (1992). If necessary, particularly for books, page numbers should be included, e.g. Donald (1989, p.57) or Gupta and Thomas (1975, pp. 145-151). Where an author or authors is referenced for more than one paper from a given year, the form is Taylor (1990a), Taylor (1990b), etc. A full list of references, in alphabetical order, should be given at the end of the paper. The names of all authors should be included. Examples of the form are:
Ormerod, A. and Sondhelm, W., 1995. Weaving: Technology and Operations, Textile Institute, Manchester, England
Rong, G.H. and Slater, K., 1995. Analysis of Yarn Uneveness by Using a Digital-signal-processing Technique, J. Text. Inst., 86, 590-599.
