About the journal
The Journal of the Australian Mathematical Society is now available in both print and electronic forms. Electronic assess to the full papers requires that your institution takes out a subscription to this version of the Journal. A free trial of part of one of the volume parts is available. Electronic access to the table of contents and the abstracts of papers is available without subscription.
The Journal of the Australian Mathematical Society began publication in 1959, and from 1975 has appeared in two series, Series A (Pure Mathematics and Statistics) and Series B (Applied Mathematics). In 2000 the Journal Series B was renamed The ANZIAM Journal. From 2001, the Journal Series A returns to its original name, the Journal of the Australian Mathematical Society.
information for authors.
Instructions to Authors
The article should be typed, printed or photocopied on high quality bond paper of either A4, quarto or US letter size, on one side only, with double spacing, and with a generous margin (at least 3 cm) all around.
The author should keep a complete copy of the submitted article as well as any electronic source; the Society will not accept responsibility for any loss.
Authors are encouraged to prepare their papers in Latex; other forms of electronic source will usually also be useful. Good quality electronic source makes the typesetters' work much easier and so the authors of such source can expect their papers to be dealt with more promptly and with fewer errors. See Preparing electronic files for more details of how to prepare the electronic source.
While the Journal strongly encourages the submission of electronic source after acceptance, it is usually not a suitable method of initial submission. Once a paper is accepted, the Editors will request the electronic source.
Each typescript should include
- an abstract of not more than 150 words, preferably containing no formulae, and certainly containing no complicated formulae and no references;
- a 2000 Mathematics subject classification (Amer.\ Math.\ Soc.);
- if the title is long, a shortened form of it, no more than forty characters in length, including spaces.
Two alternative styles for references and citations are described below. Authors are requested to use one and only one style consistently throughout their typescript.
Style 1.
A typical reference in the list of references would be
[3] L. Grüschen, `Pseudo-quasi-ergodic theorems', J. Austral. Math. Soc. 4 (1960), 2-3.
A corresponding reference in the text would be: Grüschen [3]; or [3,4,9]; or Grüschen [3, Theorem 1].
Style 2.
A typical reference in the list of references would be
[GBP] G. B. Preston, `Pseudo-quasi-ergodic theorems', J. Austral. Math. Soc. 40 (1960), 321-342.
A corresponding reference in the text would be: Preston [GBP]; or ([GBP, KG, GHL]); or Preston [GBP, Proposition 2].
In each style, the list of references should be in alphabetical order of surnames of first authors.
Explain clearly what symbols are to be set in special typefaces (such as cursive, fraktur, script, bold) where this is not clear from the typescript or electronic source. The standard mathematical fonts issued by the American Mathematical Society are available to the typesetters but any other fonts or special symbols are available, if at all, only by special arrangement.
Avoid abbreviations, such as Thm., Prop., Ex., iff, i.e., e.g., and in the text avoid also symbols such as $\forall,\ \exists,\ \Rightarrow$, and $\Leftrightarrow$.
Authors should provide diagrams drawn to professional standards. Diagrams in the form of Postscript files, or similar, may also be acceptable; the quality, however, should be similar to that obtained by a professional artist.

Editor
The Editor of the Journal is C. F. Miller. Contact him regarding all policy matters. Decisions concerning publication of papers are made by the Editor based on reports of referees and advice from Associate Editors. Enquiries concerning the status of papers which have been submitted to the Journal should be directed, in the first instance, to the Secretary at jams@ms.unimelb.edu.au.
Assistant Editors
The assistant editors of the Journal are J. J. Koliha (visit his website) and B. Wysocka.
Beata Wysocka looks after copy editing before the papers go to typesetting. Contact her concerning any late changes in an accepted paper for which you have not yet seen proofs. Make her life easier by reading our instructions to authors and preparing your papers as well as possible.
Jerry Koliha looks after papers after they have been to the typesetters. Contact him about any problems concerning corrections to proofs. Make his life easier by returning proofs promptly and well marked.
Secretary
The Secretary of the journal is Judy Gregory. Contact her about the status of papers submitted, all matters concerning receipt of letters, to make deliveries of electronic source and on any other matters not covered above.
Associate Editors
The list of Associate Editors, together with a brief description of their area of interests, is as follows. Addresses, and email contacts, are available by clicking on the name in this list. If your paper is clearly in the area of interest of one of the associate editors, then please send the paper to this editor. Otherwise send the paper to the Journal office (see Staff and addresses).
