About the journal
The Journal of The American Society For Horticultural Science is a peer-reviewed bimonthly publication of results of original research on horticultural plants and their products or directly related research areas. Its prime function is communication of mission-oriented, fundamental research to other researchers.
The Journal publishes detailed reports of original research results on various aspects of horticultural science and directly related subjects. Subject categories within the publication include:

Instructions to Authors
Please note that to achieve optimal performance, we recommend that your browser should be the most current version of either Netscape or Internet Explorer.
This system will operate more effectively with the most current versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. When selecting a browser to use with this system, please keep in mind that we have found Internet Explorer works best for PCs and Netscape works best for Macs. We make this recommendation for you to achieve optimal performance for this system only and do not intend to imply that this is true in all situations. Please take the time to update your software.
Browser
When you run the setup program for your browser, take the defaults to insure common utilities are available. Most importantly, make sure your browser allows JavaScript. You will not be able to venture past the initial page without JavaScript enabled.
You must also allow Cookies. Our program writes a cookie to your system that is active until you log out. This cookie lets the system know you are a registered user and it is a security feature for the data contained in the system. The cookie is deactivated once you log out and you will receive a new one the next time you log in.
Review Process
The manuscript submission and peer review process is broken down into the following 6 steps. NOTE - BEWARE OF DUPLICATE SUBMISSION. IF YOU SUBMIT ONLINE, SUBMIT ONLY ONLINE. DO NOT ALSO MAIL OR EMAIL IT IN TO THE ASHS OFFICE. CHOOSE ONE METHOD OF SUBMISSION ONLY UNLESS OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED BY THE ASHS OFFICE:
- The Author submits a manuscript.
- The Science Editor assigns an Associate Editor to the manuscript.
- The Associate Editor assigns a Potential Reviewer to the manuscript.
- The Reviewers review the manuscript.
- The Science Editor makes a final decision.
- The Staff contacts the Author with the decision.
Submission Process
The manuscript submission process is broken into a series of 4 screens that gather detailed information about your manuscript and allow you to upload the pertinent files. The sequence of screens is as follows:
- A long form asking for author, title, abstract, and file quantities. NOTE - AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS SCREEN IS A BUTTON ALLOWING YOU TO SAVE WHAT YOU'VE DONE AND COME BACK LATER. IT IS RECOMMENDED, THOUGH, THAT YOU TRY TO SUBMIT YOUR PAPER IN ONE SESSION IF POSSIBLE.
- A screen asking for the actual file locations (via an open file dialog). After completing this screen, your files will be uploaded to our server.
- A completion screen that will provide you with a specific manuscript number for your manuscript.
- An approval screen that will allow you to verify your manuscript has been uploaded and converted to PDF correctly.
Before submitting a manuscript, please gather the following information:
- All Author
- First and Last Names
- Postal Addresses (for Corresponding Author only)
- Work Telephone Numbers (for Corresponding Author only)
- E-mail addresses
- Title and Running Title (you can cut and paste this from your manuscript)
- Abstract (you can cut and paste this from your manuscript)
- Manuscript files in PDF, Word (Please make sure the "Language" is "English (U.S.)" via Tools->Language->Set Language), WordPerfect, EPS, text, Postscript, or RTF format. NOTE - THE TITLE PAGE MUST HAVE THE CONFLICT-OF-INTEREST AND FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE STATEMENTS CLEARLY LISTED. IF THERE ARE NONE, PLEASE BE SURE TO STATE THAT. ALSO NOTE - If your paper is accepted for publication, the publisher will NOT be able to use PDF text files. PDF is acceptable for figure files for production but not for text. PDF is acceptable for the initial submission and review process.
- If possible, Manuscript files should have the images/figures embedded "inline"
- Figures/Images embedded in the Manuscript file or in external files in TIFF, GIF, JPG, PDF, Postscript, or EPS format. Note - PDF is acceptable for figure files for production but not for text.
- Contact information (e-mail address and institution) of desired peer reviewers (if any).
After the manuscript is submitted, you will be taken to a page that will allow you to review your manuscript that has been converted to PDF. If the conversion is not correct, you can replace or delete your manuscript files as necessary. After you have reviewed the converted files, you will need to click on "Approve Manuscript". This link will have a red arrow  next to it. Throughout the system, red arrows reflect pending action items that you should address.
Getting Help
If you need additional help, you can click on the help signs  spread throughout the system. A help dialog will pop up with context sensitive help.
Manuscript Status
After you approve your manuscript, you are finished. You can get the status of your manuscript via:
- Logging into the system with your password.
- Clicking on the link represented by your manuscript tracking number and abbreviated title.
- Clicking on the "Check Status" link at the bottom of the displayed page.
This procedure will display detailed tracking information about where your manuscript is in the submission/peer review process.
Starting
The manuscript submission process starts by pressing the "Submit Manuscript" link on your "Home" page. Please make sure you have gathered all the required manuscript information listed above BEFORE starting the submission process.
