About the journal
The Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the official journal of the Association, is the oldest and most frequently cited peer-reviewed journal in the profession of foot and ankle medicine. Founded in 1907 and appearing 6 times per year, it publishes research studies, case reports, literature reviews, special communications, clinical correspondence, letters to the editor, book reviews, and various other types of submissions. It also regularly carries reports and announcements from the Association. The Journal is indexed in Index Medicus of the National Library of Medicine, Excerpta Medica, and CINAHL.
All expressions of opinion and all other statements are published on the authority of the writer(s) over whose signature they appear, and are not to be regarded as expressing the views of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
Manuscripts should be submitted to Editor, Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 9312 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, Maryland 20814-1621; phone: 301-581-9200; fax: 301-530-2752; e-mail: atheuring@apma.org. Editorial copy must conform to the JAPMA Guidelines for Authors. Manuscripts are considered for publication with the understanding that they have not been published in whole or in part in another publication.
About JAPMA Online
The Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association is available online at: http://www.japmaonline.org/.
JAPMA Online contains the full content of each issue of the journal, including all figures and tables. In addition, the full text is searchable by keyword, and the cited references include hyperlinks to MEDLINE and to the full text of many other online journals.
Online full-text content begins with the January 1996 issue, and will expand with each volume's new issues. Abstracts are online beginning with the January 1989 issue, and tables of contents beginning with the January 1985 issue.
Each issue is placed online approximately on the date it is mailed to subscribers, so the online site may be days or even weeks ahead of your receipt of a paper copy.
The Web site also provides access to information about the journal such as Guidelines for Authors, the Editorial Board, and subscription information, as well as access to other services.
Abstracts and tables of contents are available to all on the Internet. Access to the full text is by institutional site license, which comes with all institutional subscriptions, or by personal subscription.
We encourage you, on your first visit to the site, to sign the guestbook. This will take only a minute or two, and will give us helpful information about who the online readers are, and how they are connecting to us. In addition, we would appreciate comments, critiques, questions, or suggestions from you; these can be sent via the Feedback button found on all pages of the site. Feedback from readers will help us decide what new features would be most valuable for the site, and how well it is working for its readers.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts are considered for publication in the Journal with the understanding that they have not been published or submitted for publication in whole or in part elsewhere. Accepted manuscripts become permanent property of the Journal and may not be reprinted elsewhere without permission from the Journal.
The original and two copies of the manuscript, including three copies of all photographs, must be submitted. The title must be no longer than 80 characters and spaces, including punctuation.
Copyright Transfer Form. The copyright transfer form includes the copyright transfer statement, statement of author responsibility, and financial disclosure. The form will be sent to the author(s) of each manuscript when a manuscript is submitted to the Journal. A signature is required for each author.
Authors. No more than six authors are allowed for one manuscript without permission from the editor. Authors must limit their affiliations to two institutional affiliations. Resident manuscripts must be coauthored by a member of the residency staff, or a letter of approval must be submitted with the manuscript.
Text. All typed material, including references and figure legends, must be double-spaced on plain 8 1/2 x 11-inch white paper. A three- to four-sentence abstract is needed for all articles. Subheads should be used at least every four pages. Manuscripts must have 1-inch margins on all sides. Permission is needed to reprint quoted material; letters of permission must be included with the submission. With few exceptions, all abbreviations must be spelled out. Revised manuscripts should be accompanied by a computer disk (3.5-inch high-density disk or compact disk) with all text parts of the manuscript contained in one file.
Figures. Photographs should be glossy black-and-white prints, clear, and in sharp focus, preferably measuring 5 x 7 inches; x-rays must be converted to black-and-white prints. Do not clip, staple, or tape prints. Drawings must be in black ink on heavy white stock. All figures must be numbered and cited sequentially in the text. They must be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse with the figure number, authors鈥 names, and orientation (top). Figure legends are needed for all figures and must be typed double-spaced consecutively on a separate sheet of paper. Written permission is needed to reprint figures taken from another source. Figures may be submitted in electronic form accompanied by three printed copies. (See Technical Guidelines for Figures.)
Tables. Tables should add to the readers鈥 understanding of the text, not repeat what is in the text. Tables must be numbered sequentially and cited in the text; tables are not figures and should be numbered separately. Each table must have a complete title. Each table should be on a separate sheet of paper. Written permission is needed to reprint tables taken from another source.
References. All references must be numbered and listed in the order in which they appear in the text; after a reference has been cited once, it retains its original number. References must be typed double-spaced in JAPMA style:
The style for articles is: author(s), title of article, journal name, volume, page, and year:
Wiles S, Palladino SJ, Stavosky JW: Naviculo-cuneiform coalition. JAPMA 78: 355, 1988. The style for books is: author(s), chapter title, title of book, volume number, editor(s), opening page number of chapter cited, publisher, location of publisher, and date of publication:
Jahss MH: 鈥淭he Subtalar Complex,鈥 in Disorders of the Foot, Vol 1, ed by MH Jahss, p 727, WB Saunders, Philadelphia, 1982. If a reference has more than three authors, 鈥渆t al鈥 is used after the third name. Unpublished references, such as personal communications, should be cited within the text; they should not be included in the reference list. In addition to historical material, current sources should be cited. Authors are also encouraged to use podiatric references, if they are available. Additional references, those not cited in the text, must be typed double-spaced in alphabetical order.
Trade Names. Please verify the spelling of all trade names used. When possible, use generic names instead of trade names. Products mentioned by trade name must be followed by the name and location of the manufacturer in parentheses. If the product is mentioned again, the manufacturer information does not need to be repeated. Trade names are not to be used in the title.
