About the journal

Profile

The Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus is a bimonthly forum for peer-reviewed information useful to the pediatric ophthalmologist for the diagnosis, treatment, correction, and prevention of eye disorders in infants, children, and adolescents, as well as for the treatment of strabismus in all age groups. Each issue includes a quiz for Category 1 CME credits.

Instructions to Authors

The Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus publishes original clinical and laboratory investigation articles, review articles, case reports, surgical techniques, descriptions of instrumentation, editorials, letters to the editor, and calendar items.

The Editor only considers manuscripts submitted solely to the Journal. Manuscript text or data that have been published previously in a similar form, or are a minor extension of previously published material, may be unacceptable. Questions pertaining to a manuscript constituting prior publication should be directed to the Medical Editor in the cover letter with copies of the previous publication.

An original and three copies of the manuscript should be submitted to:

Rudolph S. Wagner, MD
Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus
6900 Grove Road
Thorofare, NJ 08086

Authors should retain a copy of the manuscript and illustrations. The submitted manuscripts and photocopies of illustrations will not be returned. Glossy photographs will be returned to the author(s) if the manuscript is not accepted for publication.

Author Responsibilities

Cover letters should indicate the name, address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the corresponding author, along with the disclosure of any issue regarding financial conflict.

Authors should list illustrations or tables previously published and are responsible for obtaining and submitting a letter of permission for reproduction rights. If any person抯 identity can be determined from a photo submitted with the manuscript, the author must include the person抯 or the guardian抯 written permission to publish the photograph.

All authors must sign the copyright transfer to SLACK Incorporated, a financial disclosure if necessary, and participation in the study (see checklist) and include them with the cover letter. The Editorial office will not review a manuscript until this statement, including the author checklist, has been prepared.

Manuscript Submission
Technical Preparation

Manuscript style should follow the AMA's Manual of Style and spelling should reflect Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. The manuscript should be double-spaced throughout, on 81/2 ?11-inch white paper with 1-inch margins on all sides.

Limit the use of abbreviations to those that are commonly understood without explanation, such as mm Hg and CNS. Pharmaceuticals should be referred to by their generic names. Device manufacturers and their locations should appear in parentheses following the mention of devices.

Footnotes to the text and tables should be kept to a minimum. Each footnote should be typed at the bottom of the appropriate page, separated from the text or table by a horizontal line. Designate footnotes by the following symbols in this order: *, ? ? ? etc.

Organization of Manuscript

The organization of the manuscript should be as follows: Title Page; Abstract; Introduction; Materials and Methods; Case Reports, Results; Discussion; Acknowledgments; References; Legends for Illustrations; and Tables. High-quality photocopies of illustrations should be appended to the body of the manuscript following the tables.

Title Page

Each manuscript should be submitted with a title page, which should include the title of the manuscript; each author抯 name, academic degree, and academic affiliation; the institution, with city and state or country, at which the study was conducted; and the address to be used for reprint requests.

One author should be designated corresponding author, and his or her address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address should be given. If the material was presented at a meeting, the meeting information should be provided. If any author has a financial conflict of interest in the subject matter in the manuscript, this should be indicated.

Abstract

The abstract should be structured and contain fewer than 250 words. Where appropriate, abstract headings should read: Background or Purpose; Methods; Results; and Conclusions. Short Subjects do not require abstracts.

Text

The text should include the following sections when appropriate for the material: Introduction; Materials and Methods; Case Reports; Results; and Discussion. No summary section is necessary.

Acknowledgments

Limit acknowledgments to those who helped extensively, such as individuals who provided statistical help, essential equipment, or laboratory services or who translated references.

References

References should be numbered consecutively in the reference section in the order in which they are cited in the text. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references, particularly author names and page numbers.

Unpublished data and personal communication should not be listed as references, but mentioned parenthetically in the text.

Abbreviations of the names of journals should conform to Index Medicus. Names of those journals that are not listed with the Library of Medicine in the Index Medicus must be given in full. Journal names should be cited as they existed at the time of publication.

References should follow the AMA抯 Manual of Style, 9th ed.

Legends for Illustrations

All figures should be numbered in the order in which they are referred to in the text. Figure legends should be a brief description that allows the figure to be fully understood.

Illustrations

Four identical sets of illustrations should be submitted. On the back of each illustration, place a label containing the figure number, orientation (eg, top or left), and the brief running title of the manuscript.

Unmounted glossy prints or high-quality, camera-ready, laser-generated illustrations are acceptable. High-quality photocopies of illustrations should be appended to the body of each copy of the manuscript after the References. Color illustrations or photographs are acceptable.

Tables

Numbers should appear at the top of tables in the order in which they are referenced in the manuscript, along with short descriptive titles. Abbreviations used in tables that are not commonly understood terms should be explained in the legend. Material that is in the tables should not be repeated in the text. Each table should be submitted on a separate sheet.

Short Subjects

This section contains case reports, surgical techniques, and descriptions of instrumentation. Manuscripts for Short Subjects do not require an abstract and should contain approximately 1,200 words, no more than three figures, and fewer than 15 references. With these exceptions, the general requirements for articles previously outlined should be followed.

Review Process

Receipt of each manuscript will be acknowledged to the author. To expedite this process, authors are requested to enclose a self-addressed postcard with their manuscript. All manuscripts are peer reviewed by the Editorial Board, and authors are notified as soon as possible about the acceptability of their manuscripts.

Author Checklist

The author checklist must be completed and submitted along with the manuscript
