Instructions to Authors INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS Revised, December 2006 1. Objective of the Journal The Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology is an international medium publishing in English of original work in all branches of nutritional science, food science and vitaminology from any country. Manuscripts submitted for publication should be as concise as possible and must be based on the results of original research or of original interpretation of existing knowledge not previously published. Although data may have been reported, in part, in preliminary or abstract form, a full report of such research is unacceptable if it has been or will be submitted for consideration by another journal. 2. Tel 81??817?821, Fax 81??817?830, E-mail jnsv_ed@capj.or.jp 揜equired Submission Form?should be attached with manuscripts. 2.2 Upon acceptance of an article by the Journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer its copyright to the publisher. This transfer ensures a wider dissemination of information. 2.3 Following the completion of proofreading, the abstracts will be published on the homepage of the Japanese Society of Nutrition and Food Science. 3. Preparation of Manuscript 3.1 Hardcopy Submission: Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced (65 strokes26 lines) on A4 size paper, single-sided and line-numbered throughout. One printed copy of the paper and illustrations should be submitted. E-mail Submission: A complete manuscript is to be submitted to the e-mail address of the Editorial Board in PDF file format, with the paper and illustrations embedded in one file. After the paper is accepted, the authors are requested to submit the electronic data of the final manuscript. 3.2 The paper is classified into the following categories: a. Nutritional Science (also including Nutritional Assessment), b. Food Science, and c. Vitaminology. The classification should be clearly indicated in red ink above the right of the main title. 3.3 The Journal publishes five types of articles: 3.3.1 Regular Paper, Concise reports of original research and manuscripts describing concepts developed from published literature will be considered. A model plan for the construction is as follows; a. Summary (200?50 words), b. Introduction, c. Experimental (or Materials and Methods), d. Results, e. Discussion, f. Acknowledgement(s), and g. References. 3.3.2 Research Note, This is a brief report of scientifically sound research of limited scope, and the like. It should not exceed 3 printed pages and does not to require the formal organization of a regular paper, although a brief summary and several key words are required. 3.3.3 Technical report, This is a reports on new experimental methods in food and nutritional sciences. Its format is required to be in accordance with that of a regular paper. 3.3.4 Review, This will be received by invitation of the editor and will be subjected to editorial review. Volunteered review is also welcome after previous contact with the Editorial Board. 3.3.5 Letter to the Editor, Constructive comments and data on papers published in this Journal will be considered. An opportunity will be provided for rebuttal to the authors in question. A letter, data and the authors?BR>replay are limited to a printed page each. 3.4 The first page of the manuscript is to contain the title, name(s) of author(s) and complete name(s) of institution(s), number of tables and figures, a brief running head, and name and address of corresponding author. (Japanese authors are requested to write their names and addresses, together with the title and summary of the paper, in Japanese). Authors are requested to write down 4 or 5 key words (at least one or more from the title) immediately in a new line below the summary. Key words may consist of more than one word. 3.5 References should be restricted to only those that are essential, and extensive review of the literature should be avoided. References cited in the text should be numbered (in italic) in order of appearance and listed at the end of the text. The title words of journals should be abbreviated according to the Index Medicus. Examples are shown below: 1) Kashimura J, Kimura M, Itokawa Y. 1996. The effect of isomaltulose-based oligomers feeding and calcium deficiency on mineral retention in rats. Raven Press, New York. 3.6 The unit abbreviations shown below may be used without a period in accordance with the 揅BE Style Manual?6th edition, prepared by the CBE Style Manual Committee and published in 1994 by Cambridge University Press. L, mL, L, kg, g, mg, g, ng, pg, mol, mmol, mol, nmol, pmol, mol/L (mol L1) or M, mM, M, nM, pM, mp, bp, y, mo, wk, d, h, min, s, MBq, kBq, Bq, Km, Vmax, pH, etc. 3.7 In regard to vitamin terminology, chemical names (such as L-ascorbic acid) should be used if chemical aspects are important, while vitamin names (such as vitamin C) may be used if nutritional aspects are to be emphasized. 3.8 For other terms, symbols, and abbreviations, consult 揈nglish-Japanese and Japanese-English Dictionary of Nutrition and Food Science Term?(揈iwa- Waei Eiyo Shokuryogaku Yohgoshu?in Japanese) published in 1997 by Kenpakusha, Tokyo. 3.9 Drawings should be done in black ink on white paper. Although drawings prepared with the aid of software packages at a high-quality print-out are acceptable, those prepared for oral presentation are seldom suitable for use in printed documents. All figures should be marked with the first author抯 name and number in pencil in the lower right corner of each sheet. Legends to figures should be typed in text form. The approximate location of each table or figure in the text should be indicated in red ink in the margin of the manuscript. Duplication of data in tables and figures should be avoided. The cost of color reproduction of figures will be charged to the author(s). 4. Statistical Treatment Authors should hold prior consultation with a statistician or an expert about their experimental data. In the case of contribution, they should cite the literature for all statistical analyses other than ANOVA, Student抯 ttest or chi-square test and specify the version of the software if based on computerized computation. 5. Human and Animal Experimentations A manuscript describing research on human subjects should contain a statement on the manner in which the study complied with the code of ethics of the World Medical Association (Declaration of Helsinki). The author( s) should also submit a letter of approval with the research. The protocol of research on animals should also be approved by the appropriate committee in line with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The Japanese Society of Nutrition & Food Science has organized an ethical committee to take such problems in hand for contributors. 6. Author抯 Cost for Publication Those authors whose papers are accepted for publication are requested to order at least 100 reprints. The Journal is published by the Center for Academic Publications Japan for the above societies, beginning with Vol.19 (1973), bimonthly with six numbers forming one volume per year.
