About the journal

Aims and Scope:

The Journal of Neurogenetics publishes papers involving genetic and molecular neurobiology. This covers studies of genes and genetic variants in that influence neural development (pattern formation and cell differentiation) and function (physiology, neurochemistry, and behavior). We encourage submission of neurogenetic investigations performed on organisms ranging from microbes (such as bacteria and paramecia) to metazoans. The latter traditionally encompass nematodes, Drosophila, mouse, and humans, which have been particularly suited to genetic and molecular studies of the nervous system. But we also encourage submission of reports involving studies performed on any organism that permits the application of genetic variations or molecular-genetic materials to analysis of neurobiological phenomena--recognizing that these approaches are expanding to species, such as zebrafish, ranging beyond the more classical systems. In addition to original articles, short communications and reviews are welcome (see "Instructions for Authors"). We also publish groups of abstracts, especially (but limited to) those associated with neurogenetic conferences that occur on a regular basis.

Instructions to Authors

INTRODUCTION

Decisions on papers will be made as rapidly as possible; every attempt will be made to let authors have reviewers' comments within four weeks of receipt. Articles will usually be published within three months of acceptance.

SUBMISSION Papers should be submitted directly to the Editor in Chief who will ask the appropriate Associate Editor to arrange for referees, and/or will so arrange after consultation with Advisory Board members. Submission of a paper will be taken to imply that it represents original work not previously published, that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication, and that if accepted for publication, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any language, without the consent of editor and publisher. It is a condition of the acceptance by the editors of a typescript for publication that the publishers automatically acquire the copyright of the typescript.

Language: All submitted manuscripts should be written in English. ORGANIZATION Papers should be typed double spaced with wide (3 cm) margins on good quality paper. Manuscripts should include a summary (an abstract of 150-200 words), abbreviated title for running headlines (up to 35 characters), and 4 to 6 keywords. These words should usually not be redundant to those in the paper's title, i.e., should instead, whenever possible, expand on the title's informational content. Except for short communications and reviews (see below), each paper should be subdivided and in the following order: Summary, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, and References. Any tables and legends to figures should be typed separate sections (see below). Footnotes should not be used. Genetic loci (with reference to the gene name or its abbreviated symbol) should be italicized, as should be genus and species names; journal names and Latin phrases and names will be set in roman type. Abbreviations which are non-standard should be defined in the text when first used. The corresponding author should be indicated, along with this person's full address, plus telephone and FAX numbers. TEXT HEADINGS Set first-level headings in the text over to the left, typed all in capitals (upper case); begin the text on the following line. Second-level headings should be typed in small (lower case) letters but with all main words capitalized. Underline the heading and start the text on the next line. For third-level headings, only the first letter should be a capital. Underline, then run on the text after three typewriter spaces.

FIRST-LEVEL HEADINGS

Second-level Headings

Third-level headings, with text run on.

SHORT COMMUNICATIONS AND REVIEWS

Papers in these two categories can be submitted at any time to the Editor in Chief; in addition, review articles will be solicited. Short Communications (total length, 1000-2000 words, figures and tables not to exceed four, e.g., two of each) can be in a format that does not include separate sections for, say, introduction or results, but can be subdivided in the regular manner; or that, for example, combines results and discussion. Such short papers should, however, include a summary (100 words or less) and keywords. Reviews should be subdivided as to the appropriate first, second and third levels of subtopics (see above) instead of Introduction, Results, and so forth; they need not include a summary, but should have keywords specified. Other elements of such review articles (figures, tables and references) should be in the same format as for regular articles.

REFERENCES

References are cited in the text by authors' names and year of publication (et al., should be used for papers authored by more than two persons). All references should be listed alphabetically at the end of the paper. Listed references should list author's last name followed by first initials, year, title, periodical, volume and inclusive page numbers. Examples:

Heisenberg, M., Borst, A., Wagner, S., and Byers, D. (1984). Drosophila mushroom body mutants are deficient in learning. J. Neurogenet. 2, 1-30.

Nelson, D.L., and Kung, C. (1978). Behavior of Paramecium: chemical, physiological, and genetic studies. In Taxis and Behavior, ed. G. L. Hazelbauer (London: Chapman and Hall), pp. 75-100.

Unpublished results (including articles submitted for publication) or personal communications should be cited as such within the text. Personal communications should be substantiated by a letter of permission.

FIGURES All figures should be numbered with consecutive arabic numbers, have descriptive captions (see below), and be mentioned in the text. Keep figures separate from the text, but indicate an approximate position for each in the margin.

Preparation: Figures submitted must be of a high enough standard for direct reproduction. Line drawings should be prepared in black (India) ink on white paper or tracing cloth, with all lettering and symbols included. Alternatively, good sharp photoprints ("glossies") or computer-generated laser prints are acceptable. Photographs intended for halftone reproductions must be good glossy original prints, of maximum contrast. Clearly label each figure (on the back), with at least the first author's name plus the figure number indicating "top" where this is not obvious. Redrawing or retouching of unusable figures will be charged to authors.

Size: Original photographs should preferably be cropped to the final intended width. Figures should be planned so that they reduce to a 13 cm column width. Photographs for halftone reproduction should be approximately twice the desired size. Nucleic acid sequences should be presented as glossy prints or original typescripts. It is preferable for magnifications to be indicated by means of a bar on the photograph.

Captions: Each figure caption, with its relevant figure number, should be typed on a separate sheet.

Color plates: Whenever the use of color is an integral part of the research, or where the work is generated in color, the journal will publish the color illustrations without charge to the authors. Reprints in color will carry a surcharge.

TABLES Number tables consecutively with roman numerals, and give each a clear descriptive caption at the top.

PROOFS

Author will receive proofs (including figures) by airmail for correction, which must be returned to the printer within 48 hours of receipt. Please ensure that a full postal address (and telephone number) is given on the first page of the manuscript so that proofs are not delayed in the post. Authors' alterations in excess of 10% of the original composition cost will be charged to authors.

Early Electronic Offprints:

Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.

REPRINTS

Seh5or authors receive 25 free reprints. Additional reprints may be ordered by completing the appropriate form sent with proofs.

PAGE CHARGES

There are no page charges to individuals or institutions.
