About the journal
|
Journal of Motor Behavior is devoted to an understanding of the basic processes and mechanisms underlying motor control, learning, and development. The journal publishes articles from such diverse disciplines as biomechanics, kinesiology, movement disorders, neuroscience, psychology, and rehabilitation. A wide variety of articles report empirical findings, mathematical and computational models, and new theories and theoretical perspectives, as well as methodological and technological developments. Review articles and invited articles by recognized authorities also appear. The journal also publishes Rapid Communications that showcase exciting new findings. |

Instructions to Authors
The Journal of Motor Behavior publishes articles that contribute to a basic understanding of motor behavior, broadly defined. Papers from various perspectives and differing levels of analysis are encouraged, including psychological, neurophysiological, biomechanical, developmental, and clinical approaches. Of special interest to the Journal are those articles that attempt to bridge perspectives to infer processes underlying motor control, learning, and development. These approaches may embrace a range of activities, including postural, locomotive, and manipulative aspects of motor functions, as well as coordination of speech articulators and eye movements. Papers dealing with analytical techniques and mathematical modeling are welcomed. Applied work is acceptable to the extent that it contributes to a basic understanding of motor performance.
In addition to reports of original research, the Journal encourages theoretical and review papers and publishes notes and comments devoted to replications, criticisms, replies, or shorter papers presenting new and stimulating ideas. The Journal will entertain proposals from “guest editors” who would like to devote all or part of one issue to a group of papers concerned with a common theme. Occasionally, there is a “Letters to the Editors” section for brief (one or two typed pages, double spaced) and informal statements on issues of concern to the readership.
The Journal also publishes Rapid Communications, short (up to four pages, including references, figures, and tables) articles that showcase exciting new findings. Articles for that section must be in the appropriate format (see submission procedures, below) and should be sent to Daniel M. Corcos, School of Kinesiology, (M/C 194), University of Illinois at Chicago, 901 West Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL 60608.
Submission Procedures Manuscripts should be typed (no more than 12 characters per in., i.e., 10-point type) double-spaced throughout and should strictly adhere to the conventions of style and format described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2001; available at university libraries or from the APA, P.O. Box 92984, Washington, DC 20090-2984). The title page of the manuscript must be double-spaced. Include on the title page a 44-character running head and a list of four or five key words or phrases to be used by bibliographic services. The Abstract should be no longer than 120 words
Mathematical equations. It is important that papers containing mathematical notation adhere to the APA standards for the reporting of such material.
Four copies of the manuscript must be submitted, along with all figures and tables. A cover letter must be submitted, indicating intent to have the manuscript considered for publication by the Journal of Motor Behavior and that the manuscript currently is not under review, nor will it be submitted to another journal while under consideration for the Journal of Motor Behavior. An address where the primary author can be contacted, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address must be provided in the cover letter and on the title page of the manuscript.
The editorial office will acknowledge receipt of the manuscript as well as handle all future correspondence with the author.
Accepted manuscripts Detailed formal requirements for electronic submission of articles will be provided at the time of acceptance. Briefly, submit an accepted article electronically as a minimally formatted double-spaced Word file in Times or Times New Roman. Do not use word-processing style tags, forced section or page breaks, or automatic footnotes. E-mail tables as a single separate file. E-mail figures for accepted articles as tiff or eps files or as original files from Illustrator or Photoshop. In the figures, the width of all lines, including axes and ticks, should be no less than 1 point. Font sizes, symbols, dashes, and dots in dotted lines should be large enough and spaced apart sufficiently so that they will be readable when reduced 50%. Do not use gray screens or colors; instead use dots, lines, cross-hatching, or solid white or black to differentiate columns. Do not box figures: The publisher places a box around the figure. As back-up, authors of an accepted manuscript must provide 5- × 5- in. (13- × 13-cm) prints of all figures. Laser-printed figures meeting standards of at least 600 dpi are acceptable; dot matrix plotted figures are not. (Figures may be drawn in india ink by either a professional drafting service or a plotter that can use such ink.) On the backs of figure pages, indicate the name of the first author and the figure number. Failure to adhere to the prescribed standards will delay publication. Authors will be asked to redo figures if the figures are deemed unsuitable for publication.
