About the journal

The Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy presents experimental and theoretical articles on all subjects relevant to molecular spectroscopy and its modern applications. An international medium for the publication of some of the most significant research in the field, the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy is an invaluable resource for astrophysicists, chemists, physicists, engineers, and others involved in molecular spectroscopy research and practice.

Instructions to Authors

Online Submission of Manuscripts
Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy manuscripts may be submitted using the Elsevier electronic submission tool. To use this submission route, please go to go the Web site and upload your article and its associated artwork. A PDF is generated and the reviewing process is carried out using that PDF. All correspondence between editor and author is performed by e-mail, and paper copies are not required at the original submission stage. To submit your paper online please click here

Alternative Methods of Submission
Authors also have the option of transmitting the text and artwork of their manuscript via computer disk or e-mail, each time a new version is submitted (please label files with manuscript/production number). Submission as an e-mail attachment is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes. Manuscripts prepared using LaTeX(2e) are welcome (see below). Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic file must be supplied along with the disk or e-mail. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.

Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and, if necessary, by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and other material published in the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy represent the opinions of the author(s), not those of the Editor or the Publisher.

Copyright and Permissions
Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, see http://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided after acceptance.

If material from other copyrighted works is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com.

Templates
LaTeX templates and detailed documentation for use are available for downloading from the Elsevier LaTeX Support Page (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/latex). Note that the use of other specialized versions of TeX or extensive use of custom macros may necessitate conventional typesetting from the hard-copy manuscript. The use of templates is optional.

If the LaTeX file is suitable, proofs will be produced without re-keying the text. It should be noted that due to defined typesetting standards and the complex requirements of electronic publishing, the Publisher will not always be able to exactly match the layout the author has submitted. The template is only intended to be used in assisting with the preparation and submission of manuscripts and its adoption will neither speed nor delay publication. Elsevier can handle most major word processing packages, and in general most formatting applied by authors for style and layout is replaced when the article is being typeset.

Types of Papers
In addition to Regular Articles, JMS publishes Letters to the Editor, which are rapid announcements of important results, and Notes, which are brief reports of short but complete projects. Both will be published as quickly as possible. Letters and Notes should not normally exceed two printed pages. They do not need an abstract. Barring this one exception, they should be prepared following the guidelines for regular articles.

Books for review should be submitted in duplicate. The Editor will decide whether the book is suitable for review in the journal and if so will then assign a reviewer.

Manuscripts, books for review, and meeting announcements should be sent to the Editor at the address listed above.

Instructions for Preparing Manuscripts
Form of manuscripts. Manuscripts should be typed on one side of high-quality 8.5 x 11-inch or A4 paper using double-spacing throughout. Each copy should include all figures, tables, etc. Each page of the manuscript should be numbered.

The first page should contain the article title, the authors' names and affiliations, and the name, complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the author to whom proofs should be sent.

The second page should contain an abstract, unless the article is a Note or a Letter. Keywords should be listed immediately after the abstract.

References in the text, in order of citation, should be typed in square brackets. The list of references should be given on a separate page in numerical order. Journal names should be abbreviated according to Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index. Please note the following examples:

Equations should be numbered consecutively using parentheses around Arabic numbers, e.g., (7), with the number to the right of the equation. Reference to equations should use the form Eq. (7). Identify any unusual symbols for the typesetter.

Figuresshould be numbered in sequence with Arabic numerals; the figure legends should be listed on a separate page. Care should be taken that lettering is large enough to be read after a reduction of 50-60%. Mark the original of each figure with the author's name and the figure number. Only clear original illustrations are acceptable; figures not meeting minimum standards will be returned to the author for redrawing. Illustrations in color can be accepted only if the authors defray the cost. Please visit our Web site at http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork.

Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, e.g., Table 2. Tables will be typeset and authors should read their prooofs carefully. Decimal alignment of columns is recommended. Groups of three digits should be separated by a space, not a comma, for example, 2 526 000, not 2,526,000; a leading zero should be placed in front of a decimal point, e.g., 0.36, not .36. Footnotes to tables (superscript lowercase letters) should be placed at the bottom of the page of the table; footnotes in text (superscript numbers) should be listed consecutively on a separate page.

Supplementary Material
Elsevier and the Editor of Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy invite authors of articles submitted for publication to provide supplementary material in electronic form. Supplementary material that does not appear in the print version of an article can be found online on ScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com) and is also available as part of the Ohio State University Molecular Spectroscopy Archives.

Supplementary material (even though not printed) is an integral part of a journal article and therefore will be sent to the reviewers along with the manuscript. Because this material will be mounted exactly as submitted by the author, we recommend that the material be presented in an electronic format that is readily accessible to the community. To ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please provide the data in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. Please note, however, that supplementary material will not appear in the printed journal. Files can be stored on 3?-inch diskette, ZIP disk, or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh). For more detailed instructions, please visit our Author Gateway at http://authors.elsevier.com,click on "Artwork instructions," and then click on "Multimedia files." Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author along with reprint order forms. Authors will be charged for excessive alterations.

Summary of File Requirements
To facilitate processing and ensure that your manuscript can be set from the files supplied, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Include only those macros that are actually used in the preparation of the manuscript. Use of custom macros should be avoided.
  • Submit the text of your manuscript as a single file whenever possible. Please include only those references that are actually cited in your manuscript. Do not attach your entire bibliographic data base.
  • Provide copies of any auxiliary files generated when running (La)TeX and of any specialized style files used. Once the (La)TeX file is transferred to disk, run (La)TeX to ensure that the disk is usable.
  • Do not embed tables or graphics in the files. Graphics must be supplied separately in EPS or TIFF format. They should be supplied on their own disk.
  • Avoid manual coding relating to line breaks, page breaks, and figure placement. Vertical and horizontal spacing is difficult for typesetters to remove. Extensive formatting on the part of the author could render the disk unusable by the typesetter. For this reason, formatting should be restricted to formatting of the equations; formatting of the page should be left to the typesetter.
