Instructions to Authors

All authors should also read the Message from the Editors

General Considerations

Papers of high scientific or practical interest on all aspects of snow and ice are published in the Journal of Glaciology. Three types of papers may be submitted (in hard-copy or as a PDF file):

  1. papers on new glaciological findings and theories;
  2. papers on new instruments and methods; and
  3. correspondence (short letters limited to two Journal pages) of a topical nature or commenting on published Journal papers.

Papers should be concise. Those expected to exceed 12 Journal pages in total should be pre-cleared with the Chief Editor (a page accommodates about 1000 words of text). Supporting data may be deposited in one of the World Data Centres for Glaciology. Theses and reports should be condensed and rewritten before submission. Observations ought to be separated from interpretation, usually by a section break. Careful preparation and the use of good English will expedite publication. Papers not meeting the above criteria will be returned to authors unreviewed.

The responsibility for opinions expressed in letters and papers, and for the accuracy of all data, mathematics, and references rests with the authors. Submission of a paper to the Journal implies that a similar paper has not been submitted or published elsewhere. Consideration may be given to papers published previously in a language other than English, but full details of the other publication and the copyright must be given at the time of submission. Authors may facilitate review of their paper by suggesting three referees.

Title, Abstract, Section Headings

The title must be concise and convey the general topic of the paper. The abstract cannot exceed 200 words. Papers should be divided into sections such as: Introduction, Methods, Results (or Observations), Interpretation, Discussion and Conclusion. Subsections and sub-subsections may be used, each with short headings. Normally no further subdivisions should be used. If numbered, Arabic numerals, not Roman numerals, should be used.

Units, Symbols

SI units or units approved internationally for use with SI should be used. Other units should be accompanied by SI equivalents. Algebraic symbols for physical quantities should be typed or clearly written by hand and follow the recommendations of the Commission for Symbols, Units and Nomenclature of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. If more than 20 symbols are used, a List of Symbols should be included.

Acknowledgements

It is normal to acknowledge the funding source, helpers, contractors for major logistic support, referees (by name if not anonymous) and the Scientific Editor.

Figures, Tables

Figures should be submitted at final publication size on separate pages, and be identified with the author's name and Arabic numbers on the back. One of each original drawing, laser printer output, or high-quality black and white glossy print should be submitted, plus the specified number of copies, as follows:

  • width ?up to 85 mm (single column) or up to but not exceeding 178 mm (double column);
  • length ?up to but not exceeding 265 mm, including caption (full page, if the caption fits underneath);
  • labelled tables, figures, etc. should follow the text;
  • figure captions should be on a separate page.

Text in figures should be 10 point to match the size of the text of the printed Journal paper. Every frame of multipart figures should be identified by a letter (i.e. a, b and c) without parentheses in 10 point bold at the final figure size.

  • Figures should not be placed in boxes;
  • Avoid a wide range of grey scales to differentiate features. Careful choice of hatching is better. Line drawings should have strong black lines with lettering of sufficient size to be legible;
  • Axis labels should be in sentence (not title) case with SI units in round, not square, brackets (e.g. (cm s?) not (cm/s)). Vertical titles should read from the right;
  • Rules about units and symbols (see Units, Symbols) should be followed for lettering figures;
  • The acceptable resolution of electronic images depends on the type of figure (see Accepted Papers).

Colour figures may be used, but the extra cost for colour separation and printing must be paid by the authors (see Page Charges.)

Authors wishing to have their figures returned should tell the Society at the time of submission.

Tables, however small, should be identified by Arabic numbers and referred to in the text (e.g. see Table 4).

REFERENCES

Principles

The list of references should be as short as possible, with essential references only. The purpose of the list and reference style is to ensure readers can locate cited literature; accurate and complete references are therefore crucial. Misspelled names, incorrect dates, or missing publisher locations defeat the purpose of the list. When in doubt, include too much rather than too little information. The accuracy of references is the responsibility of the author(s), to whom queries should be addressed.

In Press/Unpublished Work

Papers accepted for publication but not yet released should be listed as "in press" in place of the Journal volume, using the year of acceptance as the date. Manuscripts submitted for publication but not yet formally accepted are unpublished. Unpublished work/data, personal communications, manuscripts in preparation or submitted for publication or in review, and web publications should be cited in the text, not the reference list (e.g. personal communication/unpublished data from "Author", "Date"; or URL).

Abbreviations

Where possible, Journal titles should be abbreviated according to internationally recognized systems (e.g. International Serials Catalogue of the ICSU Abstracting Board, ISBN 92-9027-004-7). If uncertain about how to cite a reference, enclose a photocopy of the title page of the publication.

Citations

All citations must have a corresponding entry in the reference list; all entries in the reference list must be cited in the text. References in the text are made by giving the author's name and date of publication (e.g. Smith, 1988). If the name of the author is part of the sentence, only the year is in parentheses. Where two or more papers published in the same year by the same author are cited, each paper should be distinguished by a small letter placed after the date (e.g. Smith, 1988a, b). For three or more authors, use "and others" (e.g. Smith and others, 1988). If a paper is in review, refer to it as personal communication (e.g. personal communication from A.M. Smith, 1988) until it has been formally accepted; then it may be listed in the references as in press.

Reference List

References to literature cited should be in alphabetical order as follows: by proper name of first author followed by initials, then initials and proper name of subsequent author(s); year of publication; title of paper; title of periodical; volume number; issue number in brackets; first and last page numbers of the paper. For a book, the place of publication, the name of the publisher, and the number of the edition should be given.

SUBMISSIONS

Hard Copy Submissions

Papers must be DOUBLE-SPACED with every page numbered and should have 40 mm MARGINS.

Mail ONE ORIGINAL and THREE hard copies (the three may be double-sided) to

Production Assistant, Journal of Glaciology
International Glaciological Society
Scott Polar Research Institute
Lensfield Road
Cambridge CB2 1ER
United Kingdom

along with a covering letter which should provide complete contact information for the corresponding author.

Electronic (PDF) Submissions

The Journal will now accept electronic submissions as Portable Document Format (PDF) files, which should shorten review time. The technical instructions listed here (PDF instructions), or obtainable from the IGS (Int_Glaciol_Soc@compuserve.com), must be followed.

 All authors submitting papers should have read the Message from the Editors

Accepted Papers

The Society typesets the Journal using 3B2 desktop publishing software in Windows. After formal notification of acceptance has been received from the Chief Editor(s), the final paper should follow the format for submitted papers, with 40 mm margins, double-spaced on single-sided paper. An electronic version of all material (text and figures) should be included on an appropriate storage medium, 3.5 inch DOS-formatted disk, CD-ROM or ZIP disk. Acceptable formats are TEX, ASCII, Word or WordPerfect; TEX is preferred, particularly for mathematical papers. The acceptable resolution of electronic images depends on the type of figure. Recommended resolutions are: half-tone, 300 dpi; line art, as high as possible (minimum 1200 dpi); images using grey scales, 600?200 dpi. TIFF or EPS are the preferred formats, but PS, JPEG or PICT(Mac) may be used, preferably with a Bitmap or TIFF preview; GIF is too low-grade.

Page Charges

The Society requests that all authors honour page charges in order to be able to maintain the Journal. The rate is ?0 (pounds Sterling) per page; 100 offprints of the paper will be provided free. All contributions are subject to a uniform editorial process that aims to be speedy and fair. Acceptance or rejection of papers is based upon their perceived merit. Upon acceptance for publication in the Journal, paid manuscripts will be published without additional delay; unpaid manuscripts will be published at the fastest rate that the Society can afford. Papers with colour are subject to a mandatory charge of ?50 (pounds Sterling) for every published page, not just those with colour. If an electronic file of the colour image is not available there will be an additional charge for colour separations.
