Instructions to Authors
Instructions for Contributors (Revised January, 2000)
1. THE JOURNAL OF GENERAL AND APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY (JGAM) is issued by The Microbiology Research Foundation. JGAM is a bimonthly, international journal devoted to the publication of original articles in general and applied microbiology. Original papers (i.e., Full Papers and Short Communications) and Invited Reviews are considered for publication. Papers already published, in press or under consideration elsewhere are not accepted.
2. All manuscripts are reviewed and evaluated by at least two referees. In the case of disagreement between or among referees with respect to the merits of a paper, the Executive Editors will make the final decisions. The acceptance, revision, and order of appearance of the manuscripts submitted are determined by the Executive Editors. The Executive Editors may change or unify wording, figures and/or tables. The revised version of a manuscript must be submitted within six months of the authors' receipt of the referees' report. Revised manuscripts returned after six months will not be considered for publication.
3. Manuscripts should be written in English and submitted in triplicate (one original and two high-quality copies, each including all tables, figures and references), together with a letter of transmittal giving
1) the title of the paper; 2) the category of the manuscript (i.e., Full Paper, Short Communication); 3) the running head; 4) the name(s) of author(s), institution(s), and address(es); 5) the name of corresponding author, address, telephone number, E-mail address, and fax number; 6) the number of text pages, tables and figures; 7) the number of reprints required, with or without covers, in multiples of 50 (also, see 18).
For general style and layout, authors should consult a current issue of JGAM. If the manuscripts submitted do not meet the requirements mentioned below, they may possibly be returned to the corresponding author.
4. Full papers are full-length, well-documented articles of original, comprehensive and complete work. Therefore, the papers of this category should have originality and high scientific merit. The text of a full paper should be as brief as possible and no more than 16 printed pages including tables and figures. With the approval of the Executive Editors, additional pages may be published. The standard format includes adequately classified headings as: Summary, Key Words, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements and References. Where appropriate, Results and Discussion may be combined.
These should be preceded by: The title of the article, name(s) of author(s), institution(s) and a brief running head of less than 40 letters; a footnote on the mailing address of the author to whom all correspondence should be addressed, and on nonstandard abbreviations used, if any.
Authors are requested to avoid numbered subtitles unless all the papers are submitted for simultaneous publications in JGAM. All pages (including references, tables and figure legends) should be numbered consecutively. Place the last items after the Reference section.
5. Short communications (less than four printed pages, including figures, tables and references) are also accepted. With the approval of the Executive Editors, additional pages may be published. Papers of this category, reporting timely novel findings, are brief accounts of original research results, and should have the similar standard of quality and scientific merit as full papers. Do not use section headings for short communications. Short communications are usually published quicker than full papers.
6. Invited reviews should follow the style of full papers, but the use of the appropriate headings is suggested.
7. Manuscripts should be typewritten with double spacing throughout (including tables, legends and footnotes), and with reasonably wide margins (3 cm or more). Illegible manuscripts printed with dot matrix printers will not be accepted.
8. Include a summary before the text in full papers only. The summary should not exceed 350 words.
9. Make titles short but informative. Omit names of authors of taxa.
10. Each article must be accompanied by a listing of not more than eight key words identifying the content of the paper, as an aid to making the index. The name of the subject organism should always be among the key words. Insert the key words or phrases in alphabetical order immediately after the summary (Full Paper) or the address(es) (Short Communication), on a separate indented line. Each key word is to be separated by a semicolon (;).
11. Tables and figures with their respective serial numbers and brief explanatory headings should be typed on separate sheets. All tables and figures should have a short title and a short legend, respectively. Legends for figures should be assembled on separate sheets; thus, separate sheets are requested for: text, tables with legends, and figures and their legends.
12. Designate all illustrations (photographs, graphs, line drawings) as figures (abbreviations: Fig., Figs.). Figures should be drawn with Indian ink on plain white paper or other suitable material. Computer-generated drawings made with a laser printer will also be accepted. Only one set of top quality figures, as line drawings, is needed for the printer; other copies may be photographic prints or photocopies, except photographs or halftone figures where good quality prints must be supplied with each copy of the manuscript. Letters and numerals should be made with a lettering set or other printing devices but not typewriter. A convenient size for drawings is 20318 cm. Photographs and line drawings should include a scale line or bar directly on the print.
13. Footnotes should be avoided whenever possible. Essential footnotes should be indicated by superscript figures in serial numbers throughout the text and typewritten on the bottom of the respective sheets. Abbreviations of culture collections should be indicated in the Materials and Methods section or in a footnote of the table in which the microbial strains studied are shown.
14. References should arrange alphabetically in the Reference section. The alphabetically organized reference list presents works:
by author, chronologically;
by author and coauthor(s), alphabetically to coauthor, then chronologically.
If there is more than one work by the same author or team of authors in the same year, a, b, c, etc. is added to the year both in the text and in the list of references. Citations in the text should be by author and year (Name-Date System); where there are two authors, both should be named (e.g., Sato and Yoshida, 1980); with three or more only the first author's name plus "et al." need be given (e.g., Sato et al., 1960). Text citations of two or more works must be given in alphabetical order (e.g., Ando, 1990; Sato et al., 1960; Yoshida, 1958). The names of the journals should be abbreviated according to the latest Edition of BIOSIS Serial Sources. References should include, in the following order; authors' names, year of publication in brackets, article or chapter title editors (books only), journal or book title, editors (books only), name and address of publisher (books only), volume number and first and last page numbers.
Follow the styles shown in the examples below.
1) Reference for journal article:

4) Reference for materials in a book:

Only papers accepted for publication but not yet published may be cited as "in press" or "accepted for publication" in the reference list and accompanied by the name of the journal. Two copies of any papers cited as "in press" or "accepted for publication" should be enclosed with the submitted manuscript. References to papers not yet accepted should be cited in the text as unpublished results, giving the surname(s) and initials of the authors such as (Yoshida, S., pers. comm.) or (Sato, E., unpubl.). Such papers should not appear in the list of references.
15. The correct name of organisms must be used. For the use of Latin names and descriptions of new taxa of microorganisms, consult the relevant, current Bacteriological, Botanical and Zoological Codes. The Latin diagnosis and description should be checked by an expert of Latin for its accuracy prior to submission.
16. All nucleotide and amino acid sequences must be deposited in an appropriate data bank. The accession number must be obtained before submission to the Editorial Office, and this fact should be mentioned in the cover letter. Authors should also include the accession number in the text. Authors may contact the appropriate data bank for further information. Sequences with more than 100 nucleotides must be submitted as camera-ready copy.
17. For further details concerning the forms, style and abbreviations, authors should consult the CBE Style Manual, 6th ed., Cambridge University Press, New York, U.S.A., 1994.
18. The authors are responsible for reading the first galley proof. No change of the content of the paper is permitted on the galley proof. If the Executive Editors recognize the necessity of a change, this change will be made at the author's expense. If too many corrections for spelling errors, grammatical errors and/or incorrect data are made against the original manuscript, the author may be charged for corrections.
19. There are no page charges. Authors receive 50 reprints (without covers) free; additional copies (100 copies minimum) can be purchased by ordering.
