About the journal
The Journal of Electronic Imaging is copublished by The Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) and The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE). The Journal publishes papers in all technology areas that make up the field of electronic imaging and are normally considered in the design, engineering, and application of an electronic imaging system. It was developed in response to the significant activity and projected growth in the field and is an outgrowth of the annual Electronic Imaging Science and Technology Symposium, jointly sponsored by IS&T and SPIE.
The following research areas, as they apply directly to electronic imaging or focus on applied electronic imaging technology, are covered:
- Image acquisition
- Image data storage
- Image data communication
- Display of image data
|
- Hard copy output
- Image visualization
- Image processing
- Electronic imaging
|
In addition to technical papers, the Journal also publishes book reviews.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts. Manuscripts should be double-spaced, single column, in English, and the presentation should be as succinct as possible. Pages must be numbered and manuscripts must be accompanied by a Manuscript Submission form.
Electronic Submissions:
- Submissions for review: E-submissions help to reduce manuscript review time and are encouraged. E-submissions are accepted in PDF or PostScript format only. Attach your file to an e-mail message addressed to journals@spie.org. Include a completed manuscript submission form (RTF format). You will receive an e-mail acknowledgment of your submission (usually within 24 hours).
- Accepted papers: While e-submissions for review are accepted in PDF or PostScript formats only, acceptable formats for journal page composition are Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, LaTeX, or REVTeX for text, and PostScript, EPS, or TIFF for figures. Authors of accepted papers are encouraged to provide electronic files in one of these formats, along with a hard copy of the accepted paper. Electronic files may be provided on disk, as an e-mail attachment, or via FTP.
Manuscripts must contain the following:
Submission form (rtf): Please fill in and return.
Title page: List the paper title, full name(s) of the author(s), and complete affiliation/address for each author. Include an abstract that summarizes objectives, methodology, results, and their significance; 150 words maximum. Provide at least four key words. List sponsorship information in an acknowledgment section at the end of the paper.
Style: The journal generally follows the guidelines found in the AIP Style Manual, available from the American Institute of Physics.
Equations: Typewritten, numbered sequentially with arabic numerals in parentheses at the right margin. Define in the margin symbols that might be confused (such as ell/one, nu/vee, omega/w).
Symbols, units, and abbreviations: Use SI units (and their standard abbreviations) and metric numbers. Symbols, acronyms, etc., should be defined on their first occurrence.
References: Number references sequentially in the order in which they are cited in the text. Use the following basic formats:
Books: Authors (first and middle initials, last name), title (in italic), publisher, city, state, inclusive page numbers (if appropriate) (year). example: K. Jain, Excimer Laser Lithography, SPIE, Bellingham, WA, pp. 99-102 (1990).
Journal articles: Authors, paper title (in quotes), journal name (in italic), volume/issue numbers, inclusive page numbers (year). example: J. E. Clark, "Compositional ink control systems for continuous ink jet printers," J. Imaging Sci. 32(6), 259-262 (1988).
Proceedings papers: Authors, paper title (in quotes), volume title (in italic), volume number, inclusive page numbers (year). example: W. E. Glenn, "Large screen displays for consumer and theatre use," in Large-Screen Projection Displays II, Proc. SPIE 1255, 36-43 (1990).
Footnotes: Use textual footnotes only when necessary to present important documentary or explanatory material whose inclusion in the text would be distracting.
Illustrations not sent electronically will be scanned using a digital scanner. Only high-quality artwork is acceptable. Do not send negatives, transparencies, or slides. Lettering and symbols should not be handwritten. Maximum black-white contrast in original figures is important; avoid using gray-scale in line art if possible. Mount figures using glue or wax; do not use tape on figures.
Illustrations are generally reduced to column width (3-5/16 in.) or smaller. Make sure all lettering and lines are clear and dark. Number all illustrations in the order that they appear in text. All figure parts must be labeled (a), (b), etc. Continuous-tone photographs ideally should be submitted on glossy white paper, although matte prints are acceptable. Photographs that have already been screened (halftoned) will be shot as line art. Authors are strongly encouraged to send electronic files for optimal quality.
Tables are typeset and should be placed at the end of the manuscript.
Figure and table captions are typeset with the manuscript and should be typed double-spaced after the references.
Color illustrations: In papers dealing with color, we encourage the use of color when required. Additional page charges will be applied. Inserted color pages are accepted at cost of insertion (see next paragraph).
Author-supplied illustrations: If, due to the nature of the work, authors opt to supply already-printed B&W or color pages for insertion when the journal is bound, these pages are accepted at the cost of insertion. Contact the Office of the Managing Editor for details.
Biographies and photographs of authors are printed with each accepted paper. Send a brief professional biography not to exceed 150 words and a glossy photo of each author once the manuscript has been accepted for publication.
Page charges: Page charges for the Journal of Electronic Imaging are $80 per published page. Editorial acceptance and publication of papers is not tied to payment of page charges.
