About the journal

         Journal of Cluster Science

            Including Nanoclusters and Nanoparticles

For nearly a decade, this outstanding publication has been a respected forum for high-quality, peer-reviewed original articles. Journal of Cluster Science covers a broad range of topics in basic and applied cluster science in all phases ?gas, solution, and crystalline or amorphous solids ?including:

  • the synthesis of molecular clusters or nanoparticulate materials
  • structure determination
  • bonding analysis
  • chemical and physical properties
  • mathematical models of cluster structure
  • molecular biology of clusters, and
  • new instrumentation or experimental procedures for cluster research.

In addition to full papers, the journal publishes three special sections: Short Communications; The Forum; and Reviews of Cluster Research.
New Wider Scope - To better meet the needs of researchers from every corner of the cluster science community, the editors have expanded the journal's scope to include nanomaterials, complementing its traditional focus on chemistry. As a truly interdisciplinary journal, contributions from the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and statistics are most welcome.

 Journal of Cluster Science

Instructions to Authors
  1. Manuscripts, in quadruplicate and in English, may be submitted to any one of the Co-Editors:
    Richard D. Adams
    Department of Chemistry
    University of South Carolina
    Columbia, South Carolina 29208

    or

    Charles M. Lukehart
    Department of Chemistry
    Vanderbilt University
    Nashville, TN 37235

    or

    Boon K. Teo
    Department of Chemistry
    University of Illinois at Chicago
    Room 4500, SES
    845 W. Taylor St.
    Chicago, IL 60607
  2. Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Plenum Publishing Corporation will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Co-Editors will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.
  3. Type double-spaced on one side of 8 1/2 ?11 inch white paper using generous margins on all sides, and submit the original and three copies (including, where possible, copies of all illustrations and tables). All copies must be dark, sharp, and clear. Computer-generated manuscripts must be of letter quality (not dot-matrix).
  4. A title page is to be provided and should include the title of the article, author憇 name (no degrees), author憇 affiliation, and suggested running head. The affiliation should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city, and state (or nation) and should be typed as a footnote to the author憇 name. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof. For office purposes, the title page should include the complete mailing address and telephone number of the one author designated to review proofs.
  5. An abstract is to be provided, preferably no longer than 200 words.
  6. A list of 4? key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes.
  7. Text headings and subheadings should carry no numbers. In the text, abbreviations and nomenclature for chemical compounds should be those recommended by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. SI units are preferred.
  8. Reports on Crystallographic Analyses. Reports of X-ray structural determinations should include tables of crystal data, atomic positional parameters, selected interactomic distances and angles, and a labeled structural diagram (e.g., ORTEP or PLUTO type) for each analysis. Data collection procedures, structure solution methods, and computer programs used should be discussed in the Experimental section. All other structural data including observed and calculated structure factor amplitudes should be provided for review as Supplementary Material. Exceptionally lengthy or multiple listings of atomic positional parameters should also be included as Supplementary Material. It is recommended that authors deposit all crystallographic data for organic or organometallic compounds with the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC) prior to manuscript submission and include the CCDC deposition number in the Experimental section by inserting the following statement: "Crystallographic data for the structural an alysis(es) have been deposited with the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre, CCDC Nos. xxxxxx, yyyyyy, and zzzzzz for compounds X, Y, and Z. Copies of this information may be obtained free of charge from The Director, CCDC, 12 Union Road, Cambridge CB2 1EZ, UK [fax: (int.code) +44(1223) 336-033 or e-mail: Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC) or the website]." Submission of Supplementary Material for review purposes is not required for deposited crystallographic data if the CCDC number is provided at the time of submission.
  9. Mathematical and chemical notation should be typewritten wherever possible. If handwritten notation must be used, it should be clear and legible, with any necessary explanatory notes located in the margin. Equations should be numbered consecutively throughout the paper with Arabic numerals in parentheses placed flush right, and should be thusly referred to in the text [such as Eqs. (2) and (4)].
  10. Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals. The captions for illustrations should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. All illustrations must be complete and final, i.e., camera-ready. Photographs should be large, glossy prints, showing high contrast. Drawings should be prepared with india ink. Either original drawings or good-quality photographic prints are acceptable. Identify figures on the back with author憇 name and number of the illustration.
  11. Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Center the title above the table.
  12. List references numerically at the end of the paper. Use the appropriate Arabic numeral enclosed in square brackets on the baseline for citation in the text. Where there are three or more authors, only the first author憇 name is given in the text, followed by et al. References should include (mostly in this order): initials and last names of all authors, year published, name of publication, volume number, and appropriate page(s). The style and punctuation of the references should conform to that used in the journal ?illustrated by the following examples:

    Journal Article
    1. B. Malawska, M. Gorczyca, and W. Wieczorek (1990). J. Crystallogr. Spectrosc. 20, 139.

    Book
    2. A. W. Vere, Crystal Growth: Principles and Progress (Plenum Press, New York, 1987).

    Contribution to a Book
    3. S. W. Buckner and B. S. Freiser, in D. H. Russell (ed.), Gas Phase Inorganic Chemistry (Plenum Press, New York, 1989), pp. 279--322.
  13. Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and should be typed at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Place a line above the footnote, so that it is set off from the text. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.
  14. After a manuscript has been accepted for publication and after all revisions have been incorporated, manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor憇 Office as hard copy accompanied by electronic files on disk. Label the disk with identifying information ?software, journal name, and first author憇 last name. The disk must be the one from which the accompanying manuscript (finalized version) was printed out. The Editor憇 Office cannot accept a disk without its accompanying, matching hard-copy manuscript.
  15. The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs.
