About the journal

The Journal of Clinical Ultrasound (JCU) is an international journal dedicated to the worldwide dissemination of scientific information on diagnostic and therapeutic applications of medical sonography.

The scope of the journal includes--but is not limited to--the following areas: sonography of the gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract, vascular system, nervous system, head and neck, chest, breast, musculoskeletal system, and other superficial structures; Doppler applications; obstetric and pediatric applications; and interventional sonography. Studies comparing sonography with other imaging modalities are encouraged, as are studies evaluating the economic impact of sonography. Also within the journal's scope are innovations and improvements in instrumentation and examination techniques and the use of contrast agents.

JCU publishes original research articles, case reports, pictorial essays, technical notes, and letters to the editor. The journal is also dedicated to being an educational resource for its readers, through the publication of review articles and various scientific contributions from members of the editorial board and other world-renowned experts in sonography.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts, editorial communications, and copyright transfer agreements should be sent to

Bruno D. Fornage, MD, Editor
Journal of Clinical Ultrasound
Department of Scientific Publications, HMB 234
The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center
1515 Holcombe Boulevard
Houston, Texas 77030 USA
Telephone: 1-713-792-3174; fax: 1-713-794-1370; e-mail: kfphilli@mdanderson.org

All other correspondence should be addressed to Journal of Clinical Ultrasound, Publisher, c/o John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 111 River Street, Hoboken, New Jersey 07030.

Four copies of the manuscript and 3 sets of original figures should be submitted with a cover letter and copyright transfer agreement. All manuscripts must be in English. Manuscripts that do not conform to the following instructions will be returned unreviewed.

Cover Letter. Each submitted manuscript should be accompanied by a cover letter that includes the following: (1) name, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence should be sent; (2) the type of manuscript: original research article, case report, pictorial essay, technical note, review, or letter to the editor; (3) a statement disclosing any financial or other interests in the subject matter of the manuscript (or a statement that no such interests exist); and (4) a statement that this manuscript or any similar material has not been and will not be submitted elsewhere before its publication in the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound.

Review Policy. Articles considered by the Editor to be suitable for review are sent to at least 2 peer reviewers. The authors' names and institutional affiliations are withheld from reviewers to ensure unbiased review.

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced on nonerasable white bond paper, 8.5 ?11 inches (21.5 ?28 cm), with margins of at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) on all 4 sides. All portions of the manuscript, including the references, tables, and figure legends, must be double-spaced. A short version of the manuscript title and the page number should be typed in the top right corner of each page. The names of the authors and the institution(s) where the work was done should not appear anywhere in the manuscript except on the title page.

Title Page. The first page should contain (1) the title of the manuscript; (2) a short version of the title for use as a running head (maximum of 45 characters, including spaces); (3) the full name and highest degree earned for each author; (4) the name(s) of the institution(s) where the work was done; (5) the name, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence and reprint requests should be sent; and (6) acknowledgment of any financial support.

Blind Title Page. The second page should contain only the full title of the manuscript and the short version of the title. Reviewers will receive this blind title page instead of the title page.

Abstract and Keywords. The third page should contain an abstract and 3 to 6 keywords. Original research articles should have a structured abstract of no more than 200 words divided into the following labeled paragraphs:

Purpose. Explain the hypothesis being tested or the purpose of the article.

Methods. Concisely describe what was done, including number of subjects, techniques and materials used, data collected, and methods of analysis.

Results. Present the findings of the study. Give specific numbers as well as percentages, and provide indicators of statistical significance.

Conclusions. Provide a 1- or 2-sentence summary of the study's conclusions based on the results.

Case reports, technical notes, and reviews should have an abstract consisting of a single paragraph of no more than 100 words. Include the purpose of the article, a brief summary of the methods used (if applicable) and of the major findings, and the conclusions based on those findings. No abstract is required for pictorial essays.

Text. Original research articles and technical notes should be organized into the following sections: Introduction, Materials (or Patients) and Methods, Results, and Discussion. Case reports should be organized as follows: Introduction (brief), Case Report, and Discussion. Reviews and pictorial essays should be organized using appropriate descriptive headings.

In the methods section, the selection process for observational and experimental subjects should be clearly defined. Identify methods, apparatus (including manufacturer's name and location), and procedures in sufficient detail to allow other workers to reproduce the results. Describe statistical methods in enough detail to enable a knowledgeable reader with access to the original data to verify the reported results. Reference the statistical methods used, and specify any computer programs used.

When reporting experiments on humans, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accord with the ethical standards of the committee on human experimentation of the institution or in accord with the Declaration of Helsinki as revised in 1989. For experiments on animals, indicate whether the guidelines of the institution's committee on animal experimentation or of the National Research Council's Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals were followed.

References should be provided for discussions of previous studies and for all nonstandard methods used. When previous studies by the manuscript authors are referred to, the authors' last names should be used instead of "our previous studies" or "previous studies from our institution" to preserve anonymity during the review process.

Use generic names for drugs and chemicals. Do not use patients' names, initials, or hospital numbers in text, tables, or figures. All references, tables, and figures must be cited consecutively in the text.

References.

Wiley's Journal Styles Are Now in EndNote
EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style.
Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal.
How to Order: To learn more about EndNote, or to purchase your own copy, click here.
Technical Support: If you need assistance using EndNote, contact endnote@isiresearchsoft.com, or visit www.endnote.com/support.

The authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the references. References should be numbered in the order of first mention in the text and cited using superscript Arabic numerals. Abbreviations for names of medical and scientific periodicals should follow the most recent edition of the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus; the full name should be provided for periodicals not indexed in Index Medicus. For multiple-author papers or multiple-editor books, list the first 3 authors or editors followed by "et al". Use the following reference style:

Journal article
Dubinsky TJ, Guerra F, Gormaz G, et al. Fetal survival in abdominal pregnancy: a review of 11 cases. J Clin Ultrasound 1996;24:513.

Book chapter
Webb WR: Lung cancer staging: the role of imaging. In: Johnson BE, Johnson DH, editors. Lung Cancer. New York: Wiley-Liss; 1995, p 97.

Add "letter," "editorial," or "abstract" in square brackets after the title for those types of articles. For articles published in a language other than English, indicate the language of publication in square brackets after the translated title (eg, "[in German]"). References cited as "in press" in the reference list must have been accepted for publication; for such references, add "in press" in parentheses after the journal or publisher name. Personal communications and unpublished observations, including manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted, should be cited in parentheses in the text and should not appear in the reference list. Written permission from the person named as the source of a personal communication is required.

Tables. Tables should be typed double-spaced, each on a separate page, and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. A descriptive title should be provided at the top of each table. All columns should be labeled, and all abbreviations, signs, and symbols should be explained in footnotes. Use the following footnote symbols: *, ? ? ? ||, #. If data from any other source are used, the source should be cited in a footnote. Permission from the publisher and the author(s) must be obtained in writing for the use of previously published tables.

Figures and Legends. Illustrations should be professionally prepared and submitted as sharply focused, glossy, black-and-white photographs, no larger than 5 ?7 inches (12.5 ?18 cm). Letters, lines, and symbols that appear on the figures must be professionally affixed, even and unbroken, and large enough to remain legible when reduced for publication. On the back of each figure, affix a label containing the figure number and the short version of the manuscript title (but not the author's name) and indicating the top of the figure. Figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals in the order of first mention in the text. Pictorial essays may have up to 25 figure parts (eg, Figure 1A and 1B would count as 2 figure parts).

Color figures that significantly enhance the presentation will be considered for publication. Color figures are published at no charge to the author. Color transparencies or slides are preferable to color prints.

For use of photographs of identifiable persons, written permission from the subject or the subject's legal guardian must be supplied.

Legends must be provided for all figures. Legends should be typed double-spaced in a list following the tables. The legends should describe the anatomic structure and condition being demonstrated. All arrows, symbols, letters, etc., that appear on the figures must be defined in the legends. If data from any other source are used, the source should be cited in the legend. Permission from the publisher and the author(s) must be obtained in writing for the use of previously published figures.

Copyright

No article can be published unless accompanied by a signed copyright transfer agreement, which serves as a transfer of copyright from the author(s) to the Publisher. A copy of the copyright transfer agreement appears in most issues of the journal or may be obtained from the Publisher or Editor. Copyright transfer agreements may also be downloaded as a PDF file. Only original papers will be accepted, and copyright in published papers will be vested in the Publisher.

To ensure originality, if any preliminary publication of the data, other than an abstract of fewer than 200 words, has occurred or is contemplated, a copy of the manuscript or abstract should accompany the article submitted to the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound.

If text, tables, or illustrations from a previously published work are used, written permission from the publisher and author(s) must be submitted with the article.

Statements and conclusions drawn from accepted manuscripts are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the editorial staff. The Editor and the Publisher disclaim responsibility or liability for such material. Similarly, the Editor and Publisher do not guarantee, warrant, or endorse any product or service advertised in this publication.

Disclosure Statement. All authors must disclose any affiliations that they consider to be relevant and important with any organization that to any author's knowledge has a direct interest, particularly a financial interest, in the subject matter or materials discussed. Such affiliations include, but are not limited to, employment by an industrial concern, ownership of stock, membership on a standing advisory council or committee, a seat on the board of directors, or being publicly associated with a company or its products. Other areas of real or perceived conflict of interest would include receiving honoraria or consulting fees or receiving grants or funds from such corporations or individuals representing such corporations. This requirement will apply to every sort of article submitted to the Journal, including original research, reviews, editorials, letters to the editor, and any others, and should be disclosed at the time of submission. The simplest remedy for conflict of interest is disclosure. In the Journal, disclosure will henceforth be achieved by the inclusion of a short footnote with each published article. This information will be held in confidence while the paper is under review. It will not be shared with peer reviewers, and it will not influence the editorial decision to accept or reject the manuscript. When an article is accepted for publication, the editors will usually discuss with the authors the manner in which such information is to be presented.

Disk Submission Instructions

Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy.
The hard copy must match the disk.

The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).

Guidelines for Electronic Submission

Text
Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintosh format.

Software and format. Microsoft Word 6.0 is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.

File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.

Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.

Illustrations
All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.

Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.

Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.

Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.

File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).

Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, formats, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany all files.
