Instructions to Authors
JCE Authors
JCE AuthorsAuthors who submit manuscripts to the Journal of Chemical Education should address JCE's audience and its goals. The ACS Division of Chemical Education, Inc., publishes JCE as a means of communication among people who are interested in teaching chemistry. This includes teachers of chemistry from middle school through graduate school, as well as some scientists in industry and government.

W. T. Lippincott, a former editor, stated the Journal's aims well: "to provide chemistry teachers with information, ideas, and materials for improving and updating their background and their understanding of the science, and for helping them in their teaching and in their effectiveness in developing the talents of students. The central idea here is that this should be not only a 'living textbook of chemistry' as one of the early editors put it, but a perpetual and dependable learning source for chemists who teach."

JCE Open Access/Digital Reprints—New for 2008

Beginning with articles published in the January 2008 issue, JCE is adopting a new open access/digital reprints policy. Under this policy access to articles published in JCE will be provided to all users of JCE Online and not only Journal subscribers. For authors this provides the benefit of more people having access to your work. We reserve the right to change this policy at any time.

Open Access to articles published in JCE in the January 2008 issue and subsequent issues will be provided by JCE two years after the issue date of publication. This means that articles published in the January 2008 issue will have Open Access provided in January 2010. Articles published prior to January 2008 will not be made available through our Open Access policy. Only Journal subscribers have access to articles published from 1924 to 2007.

In addition to Open Access, after two years an author may also place the PDF file of the article at JCE Online into the PubMed repository and into the Chemical Education Digital Library (ChemEd DL). Links to Open Access articles at JCE Online from author Web sites or other third-party Web sites can be freely created. Such sites must link to the article at JCE Online and not to a copy of the digital reprint at any other site.

During the approximately two-year period after an article is published in an issue of the Journal and before it becomes available under our new Open Access policy, the author may purchase access for everyone to a "digital reprint". A digital reprint is a URL to which the author's Web site or another Web site can link without the requirement of an ID or password for access.

Since this is a new policy of JCE, details concerning the various options available to authors may evolve. We suggest that you refer to this page for further updates to our policy.
