About the journal
|
The journal of Burn Care & Rehabilitation provides the latest information on advances in burn prevention, research, education, delivery of acute care, and rehabilitation to all members of the burn care team. As the official publication of the American Burn Association, this is the only U.S. journal devoted exclusively to the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with burns. Original, peer-reviewed articles present the latest information on surgical procedures, acute care, rehabilitation, reconstruction, burn prevention, and research and education. Other topics include physical therapy/occupational therapy, nutrition, current events in the evolving health care debate, and reports on the newest computer software for diagnostics and treatment. The Journal serves all burn care specialists, from physicians, nurses, and physical and occupational therapists to psychologists, counselors, and researchers
Lippincott Williams& Wilkins is pleased to announce the impending release of PROMpT, a new online manuscript submission, review, and tracking system for this website. PROMpT facilitates various author and reviewer-related processes. Using PROMpT, authors can submit new manuscripts for review, deliver requested manuscript revisions, and track the status of their submissions. Reviewers can use PROMpT to access submission review assignments, return manuscript comments and acceptance decisions, and participate in other review processes in a few easy steps. We invite contributors and reviewers to begin using the PROMpT interface when it is released in the coming days. Please continue to visit the site for additional information and a link to the dedicated Journal of Burn Care & Rehabilitation PROMpT website.

Instructions to Authors Purpose
The goal of the Journal of Burn Care & Rehabilitation is to inform members of the burn team of significant advances in burn prevention, research, education, delivery of acute care, and rehabilitation. Authors are invited to submit original articles on any aspect of burn care or rehabilitation for publication.
Policy
Views expressed in the Journal represent the opinions of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy of the institution with which the author is affiliated, the American Burn Association, the International Society for Burn Injuries, the Editor in Chief, or the publisher, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. All the aforementioned disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. None of the aforementioned parties guarantees, warrants, or endorses any product or service advertised in this publication; neither do they guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer of such a product or service.
In accordance with the Copyright Act of 1976, all manuscripts must be accompanied by the following statement, signed by all authors: "The undersigned authors transfer all copyright ownership of the manuscript [title of article] to the American Burn Association in the event the work is published. The undersigned authors warrant that the article is original, does not infringe upon any copyright or proprietary right of any third party, is not under consideration by another journal, and has not been previously published. The final manuscript has been read, and each author's contribution has been approved by the appropriate author." Authors will be consulted, when possible, regarding republication of their material.
Accepted manuscripts become the full property of the Journal of Burn Care & Rehabilitation and may not be published elsewhere without written consent of the publisher. >Manuscripts must be written in English. Original articles, editorials, historical and current reviews, case reports, and descriptions of clinical care, rehabilitation, and surgical techniques are sought. It is understood that the submitted papers have not been previously published.
Readers are urged to respond to articles and to share ideas about burn care. Editors reserve the right to edit letters without changing meaning. All letters must be signed; no anonymous correspondence will be published.
Manuscript Preparation and Submission
An original and four copies of each manuscript should be submitted to: Glenn D. Warden, MD, Shriners Hospital for Children, 3229 Burnet Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45229. The author should retain one complete copy of the manuscript, including one set of glossy prints. The Journal is not responsible for loss of the manuscript in the mail. The entire manuscript must be typed double-spaced on 81/2 ?11 inch white paper, leaving ample margins. All manuscripts MUST be a minimum of 10-point font size. Number each page and identify the article by placing, at the top right-hand corner of each page, the last name of the first author.
Submissions must include the manuscript on diskette; indicating platform and processing program. The author accepts responsibility for the submitted diskette exactly matching the printout of the final version of the manuscript.
Forums. Please tag the manuscript if it is intended for a forum and indicate which forum.
Permissions, informed consent, and human experimental work. Direct quotations, tables, or illustrations that have appeared in copyrighted material must be accompanied by written permission for their use from the copyright owner and original author along with complete information as to source. A signed release is required for any photograph of a recognizable subject. If experimental work involving human subjects is presented, it should be indicated in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained, and a copy of the consent form should be forwarded with the manuscript.
Title page. Include full title of the article; initials and surnames of all authors along with their highest earned academic degrees; the name of the affiliated institution from which the work originated and the city; full name and mailing address of author to whom reprint requests should be sent; and the name and address, along with business and home telephone numbers, of the author to whom all correspondence should be addressed.
Abstract. Summarize the article in no more than 150 words. This takes the place of a final summary paragraph. The abstract should also be typed and double-spaced.
References. References should be cited in numeric order in the text, and the reference list should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet, at the end of the text, in the order of text citation. Reference list format should conform to that set forth in "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (Ann Intern Med 1997;126:36-47), also known as the style for biomedical journals. Journal abbreviations should conform to the style used in the Cumulated Index Medicus.
EXAMPLES (if six or fewer authors, list all; if seven or more, list first three and et al.):
Journals: Batstone GF, Hinks L, Whitefoot R, et al. Hormonal changes after thermal injury. J Endocrinol 1976;68:38-9.
Books: Bond VP, Sugahara T, editors. Comparative cellular and species radiosensitivity. Tokyo: Igaku Shoin Ltd; 1969. p. 78-80.
Unpublished data and personal communications should not be listed as references; mention of these should be made parenthetically in text.
Legends to illustrations. On a separate sheet, type a brief legend for each figure. Legends are not to be included as part of the prints. If a figure has been previously published, the legend must give full credit to the original source.
Tables. Type each table double-spaced on a separate sheet of paper. Tables should be numbered in the order of their mention in the text. If a table or any part therein has been previously published, a footnote to the table must give full credit to the original source.
Illustrations. Illustrations (four sets of glossy prints) should be numbered in the order of their mention in the text. A reasonable number of black-and-white illustrations will be reproduced free of charge to the author, but special arrangements must be made with the Editor in Chief for color plates, elaborate tables, or extra illustrations. For color illustrations submit positive 35 mm color transparencies (not prints) for the original (prints may be used for the two copies). Authors will bear the cost of color separations and reproductions. Drawings or graphs should be prepared in black india ink or typographic (press-apply) lettering. Typewritten or freehand lettering is unacceptable. All lettering must be done professionally and should be in proportion to the drawing, graph, or photograph. Do not send original artwork, x-ray films, or ECG strips. Glossy print photographs, 3 ?4 inches (minimum) to 5 ?7 (maximum), with good black-and-white contrast or color balance, are preferred. (Note: Please do not send photocopies, since they reproduce very poorly.) "Before" and "after" photographs of patients must be identical in size, position, and lighting. Identify all prints on the reverse side (with a gummed label) by author, title of paper, and number. Do not mount prints, write on the backs of them, or use clips or staples.
Illustrations will not be returned to authors unless specifically requested.
Electronic illustration submission. Figures may be submitted in electronic format. All images should be at least 5 inches wide. Images should be provided in EPS or TIF format. Macintosh or PC is acceptable. Graphics software such as Photoshop and Illustrator, not presentation software such as CorelDraw or Harvard Graphics, should be used in the creation of the art, although PowerPoint is acceptable. Color images need to be CMYK, at least 300 DPI, with a digital color proof, not a color laser print or color photocopy. Note: This proof will be used at press for color reproduction. Gray scale images should be at least 300 DPI, accompanied by a proof. Combinations of gray scale and line art should be at least 1200 DPI with a proof. Line art (black and white or color) should be at least 1200 DPI with a proof. Please include hardware and software information, in addition to the file names, with the disk. For more information about digital artwork guidelines, please visit the printer's web site at http://cpc.cadmus.com/da
Reprints
Authors may order reprints of their articles directly from the publisher. A reprint order form will be sent to authors with their proofs. Interested parties may obtain individual reprints of an article from the author. Reprints in large quantities, for commercial or academic use, may be purchased from the publisher. For prices and information, call 410-528-4077; email dhughman@lww.com
