About the journal
|
This monthly journal publishes fundamental research on the properties of polymeric biomaterials and the mechanisms of interaction between such biomaterials and living organisms, with attention being focused at the molecular and cellular levels. The journal publishes original research papers, short communications and review articles. The publication of this research is expected to contribute significantly to future progress in the practical applications of these substances.
Biomaterials may be defined as materials which are used in contact with tissue, blood, cells, proteins and any other living substance. The Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition, deals with polymers, synthetic and natural, as the most versatile biomaterials, having wide-ranging applications in the pharmaceutical, biomedical and biological fields. For example, they may form the basis for tissue engineering and the development of artificial organs and non-thrombogenic materials, devices and systems for diagnosis and therapy, cell cultivation substrata, cell-sorters, membranes, adsorbents, biosensors and delivery systems for bioactive agents.
The existing journals on biomaterials tend to publish papers which emphasize the applications of the science. The Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition, seeks to redress the balance by providing an international forum primarily focused on fundamental biomaterials research.

All contributions will be evaluated by at least two independent referees. Papers should be original and must not have been submitted simultaneously to any other journal. Authors are solely responsible for the factual accuracy of their papers. It is the responsibility of the principal author to secure requisite permission from his or her employer and all papers submitted are understood to have received due clearance(s) for publication.
Preparation Typescripts must be in English, typed with double line spacing, single-sided on A4 sheets (8.5'' x 11''), and should be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page. The first page should contain only (1) the title, the name(s) and address(es) of the author(s), (2) a short title not exceeding 45 letters and spaces, (3) name and address of the author to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent. An abstract of 50--250 words and 4--8 key words should follow the title page on a separate sheet. Headings and subheadings for different sections of the paper (e.g. Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion) should be clearly indicated. Detailed mathematical discussions should be placed in an appendix. Units of measurement, abbreviations and symbols should follow the International System of Units (SI). Equations and formulae should be typewritten whenever possible. Equations should be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-hand side of the page. Special symbols should be identified in the margin.
Tables and figures Tables should be given short informative titles and should be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals. Tables may be reproduced by photo-offset, i.e. directly from the typed manuscript. Figures in a form suitable for reproduction should be submitted separately from the text as original drawings in India ink, or as high contrast, unmounted photographs on glossy paper. Lettering on figures should be proportional to the size of the figure to ensure legibility after reduction. On the back of each figure should be indicated lightly in soft pencil: (1) the top of the figure by an arrow, (2) the author and figure number. All chemical structures should be supplied as artwork suitable for direct reproduction. All figures and tables should be cited consecutively in the text and a list of captions should be provided at the end of the paper.
References The references should be cited in the text in a sequential manner, indicated by numbers in square brackets. References should be listed at the end of the paper in the reference section in numerical order.
References to journals should give in this order: Initials and last name(s) of author(s), standard abbreviated title of periodical (according to the system co-sponsored by the American Chemical Society and listed in Bibliographical Guide for Editors and Authors), volume number, first relevant page, year of publication in parentheses, e.g.:
1. G. Manecke and J. Kautz, Macromol. Chem. 172, 1 (1973).
References to a paper or chapter in a book, an authored book, or an edited book should be listed in the following style respectively:
2. A.G. MacDiarmid and A.J. Heeger, in: Molecular Electronic Devices, p. 259, F.L. Carter (Ed.). Marcel Dekker, New York (1983).
3. J.D. Ferry, Viscoelastic Properties of Polymers. John Wiley, New York (1961).
4. J.B. Birks (Ed.) Organic Molecular Photophysics. John Wiley, New York (1975).
If a publication is in press, the references should be made as complete as possible, e.g., stating the name of the journal and adding ``in press''.
Proofs Proofs will be sent to the designated author to check typesetting accuracy. Alterations to the original manuscript at this stage will result in considerable delay in publication and, therefore, are not accepted unless charged to the author. Proofs should be returned within two days of receipt.
Reprints Twenty-five reprints will be supplied free of charge with each article. Additional reprints may be ordered at prices shown on the reprint order form mailed to the author together with the proofs.
There will be no page charges.
Short communications should be presented in the same style as a full paper.
Word-processor disks The publisher's production department can use your word-processor disks. If available, please send a copy of the disk with your final revised manuscript (together with two copies of the printout). This gives a substantial decrease in typesetting time and ensures that there are no re-keying errors in the article. Moreover, using word-processor disks helps us to shorten publication times. If you provide a disk, please follow these instructions:
1. Label the disk with the author's name; the word processor/computer used (e.g., IBM-PC, Macintosh); the name of the program (e.g., WordPerfect, TEX, MS-Word). If you have an editor's manuscript number, include it in the label.; 2. Send the manuscript as three files; if possible keep the text, figure legends, and tables in separate files. File names must clearly indicate the content of each file; 3. Send separate disks if you submit more than one article at the time; 4. A hard copy printout of the manuscript that exactly matches the disk files must be supplied. Special characters and symbols which are not included in the printer used, should be left as blank spaces in the files and these should be correctly written in the printout in red; 5. Do not use footnotes; 6. Do not justify the right-hand margin.
