About the journal

Many physicists are now turning their attention to domains that were not traditionally part of physics and are applying the sophisticated tools of theoretical and experimental physics to investigate new fields, such as biological processes.
The Journal of Biological Physics (JBP) provides a medium where this growing community of scientists can publish its results and discuss its aims and methods. It welcomes papers which use the tools of physics, both experimental and theoretical, in an innovative way to study biological problems, as well as research aimed at providing a better understanding of the physical principles underlying biological processes. Papers that use methods well established in the field to improve our knowledge on the biology of a system would be more suitable for a biophysical journal.
All areas of biological physics can be addressed, from the molecular level, through the mesoscale of membranes and cells, up to the macroscopic level of a population of living organisms, the main criteria of acceptance being the physical content of the research and its relevance to biological systems. In order to increase the links between physics and biology and among the various fields of biological physics, authors are advised to include a first section that introduces the basic issues addressed and the primary achievements to a non-specialist reader.
In addition to original research papers, the Journal of Biological Physics publishes review papers calling the attention of physicists to interesting unresolved biological problems that would deserve investigation by physical methods. Book reviews are also welcome.
Short Notes
This journal now incorporates Short Notes, a medium for rapid dissemination of results. For more information please follow the Short Notes link, from the journal WWW home page.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts intended for publication should be written in English and should be submitted in quadruplicate to:

Journal of Biological Physics
Journals Editorial Office
Kluwer Academic Publishers
P.O. Box 990
3300 AZ Dordrecht
The Netherlands
Telephone: (31) 78-6576203
Telefax: (31) 78-6576254

Manuscripts should be typed with double spacing on quality white paper with left- and right-hand margins. Mimeographed copies will not be accepted unless clearly legible.

The first page should include the title of the paper; the author憇 name and affiliation; a short abstract of not more than 200 words which clearly summarises the paper; and a list of key words (see below). The length of a manuscript should not exceed 25 pages, including graphs and figures.

Where papers have long titles, a shortened version (not more than 46 characters) should be indicated for running headlines.

Authors of longer papers are encouraged to divide their articles into sections with appropriate sub-headings.

Key Words

Key words supplied by the author should appear on a line following the abstract and will be used in a short index at the end of each volume of the Journal. The key words selected should be comprehensive and subject specific. It is not necessary to list the subject area of the Journal憇 coverage as a key word. Six to ten key words should be sufficient to convey the major subjects of a given paper, although more can always be supplied if the author deems it necessary.

General terms should not appear as key words, as they have little use as information retrieval tools. Please, choose key words to be as specific as possible, and list the most specific first, proceeding to the most general last.

Copyright

Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article, to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.

Units

All scientific and technical data presented should be stated in SI units, except in unavoidable circumstances.

Footnotes

Footnotes should be kept to an absolute minimum and used only when essential.

Tables

Tables, which should be typed on separate sheets, must be numbered consecutively with roman numerals and have titles. They should be prepared in such a manner that no break is necessary. The use of vertical lines in tables is strongly discouraged.

The approximate required location of the tables should be indicated in the left-hand margin of the MS.

Figures

Authors should appreciate the importance of good-quality illustrations. All graphs and diagrams should be referred to as "Figure?(not abbreviated) in the text. Where required, a detailed caption should be provided for each figure and a list of all captions provided on a separate sheet. The approximate required location of each figure should be indicated at the appropriate place in the margin of the MS.

Line drawings should be in Indian ink on white matt or tracing paper. Glossy white photographs, with the top clearly indicated, are quite acceptable.

Figures should be numbered consecutively, and should be identified with the first author憇 name and the title of the paper using a soft blue pencil (on the back of photographs, in the margin on tracing paper). All illustrations should be approximately twice the final size with lettering large enough to be legible after reduction.

References

References should be listed at the end of each paper. They should be consecutively numbered using arabic numbers between square brackets in the text. In the list of references, the numbers should appear without square brackets. A journal reference should comprise name(s) and initial(s) of author(s), title of article, abbreviated name of journal (underlined), volume number (double underlining), year of publication (within parentheses), full page numbers, e.g., 4. Helms, L.L.: "Order properties of attractive spin systems", Acta Appl. Math., 2 (1984), 379-390.

A book reference should comprise name(s) and initial(s) of author(s), title of book (underlined), publisher, town, year of publication, e.g., 14. Mayants, L.: The Enigma of Probability and Physics, D. Reidel, Dordrecht, 1984.

An edited volume reference should comprise name(s) and initial(s) of author(s), title of paper, name(s) of editor(s), title of book (underlined), publisher, town, year, full page numbers, e.g., 24. Brobrovky, B.Z. and Zaki, M.: "Asymptotic bounds on the minimal error of nonlinear filtering", in M. Hazewinkel and J.C. Willems (eds.) Stochastic Systems: The Mathematics of Filtering and Identification and Applications, D. Reidel, Dordrecht, 1981, pp.573-581.

Formulae

Formulae should be type-written whenever possible. Alternatively, a fine drawing pen and black ink should be used. It is extremely important that all mathematical symbols and letters used are identified and listed and that the required style of appearance of such symbols is clearly indicated, e.g., bold face, italics, script, outline, fraktur, etc. Sub- and superscript should be clearly indicated where confusion might arise. Use a full stop as a decimal sign. Identify in the margin any symbols that might be confused with similar symbols, e.g. letter l and figure 1, capital letter O and figure 0, letter e, Greek 扴e and element sign 扴? letter 扴u and Greek 扴n etc.

Proofs

Each principal author will receive two proofs of the article, together with an annotated copy of the manuscript. It is requested that authors read their proof and return them to the Publisher within one week of receipt. It is stressed that the author alone is responsible for the correction of the proofs, and so a very careful reading is necessary. It is a wise precaution to ask a colleague to read the proof, in addition to yourself.

Authors should be aware that the copy-edited manuscript is regarded as definitive: it should be returned to the Publisher together with one set of the proofs, and any corrections which constitute a departure from the original manuscript may be charged to the author.

Offprints

Fifty offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered when proofs are returned to the publisher.

Page Charges

No page charges are levied on authors or institutions. An exception will be made for special extras such as fold-outs and colour reproductions.
