Artwork Instructions
The Journal of Biochemical and Biophysical Methods publishes research papers dealing with the development of new methods or the significant modification of existing techniques to solve biological problems. The scope of the Journal is broad, encompassing all methodological aspects of biochemistry, biophysics, molecular genetics and cellular biology; for example: electrophoresis, chromatography, NMR and fluorescence studies. The Journal also welcomes papers elaborating relevant methods and methodological advances in the emerging areas of biotechnology (such as protein engineering, biosensors design and utilization of DNA probes), cell and tissue culture studies, biomolecular electronics and membrane biophysics. These are but a few examples of the many methodologies covered by the broad scope of this journal. Although articles should be written in sufficient detail to allow easy verification, they should also be intelligible to a broad scientific audience.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts should be submitted to an 'appropriate' editor (see inside front cover). In order to expedite publication, the original and three copies are required of both text and illustrations. Duplicates of photographs must be of the same standard as the originals. The manuscript should be typed with double spacing and wide margins, on one side of the paper only, and should be accompanied by a separate title page giving the authors' names and affiliations, as well as an address for correspondence. Authors must include the following contact details on the title page of their submitted manuscripts: name, full postal address; fax; e-mail. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined.

On-line submission as alternative for paper submission

Authors can also upload their article as a LaTeX, Microsoft?(MS) Word? WordPerfect?or PostScript or document via the "Author Gateway" page of this journal http://authors.elsevier.com, where you will also find a detailed description on its use. The system generaties an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. It is crucial that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the file is suitable for reviewing. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary.

Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs.

The preferred storage medium is a 5.25- or 3.5-inch disk in MS-DOS format, although other systems are welcome, e.g., NEC and Macintosh (in this case, save your file in the usual manner, do not use the option "save in MS-DOS format"). After final acceptance, your disk plus one final and (exactly matching) printed version (printout, hardcopy) should be submitted together to the accepting editor. It is important that the file on disk and the printout are identical. Please specify the type of computer and word-processing package used (do not convert your textfile to plain ASCII). Please do not split the article into separate files (title page as one file, text as another, etc.). Ensure that the letter "l" and digit "1" (also letter "O" and digit "0") have been used properly, and format your article (tabs, indents, etc.) consistently. Characters not available on your word processor (Greek letters, mathematical symbols etc.) should not be left open but indicated by a unique code (e.g., gralpha, @, #, etc., for the Greek letter ). Such codes should be used consistently throughout the entire text. Please make a list of such codes and provide a key. Do not allow your word processor to introduce word splits and do not use a "justified" layout. Please adhere strictly to the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of the journal. Tables and illustrations will be handled conventionally; the latter should be submitted as original drawings or glossy prints. Further information may be obtained from the Publisher.

Full-length articles should

(a) be divided into sections: Abstract, 1. Introduction, 2. Materials and methods (followed by sub-sections 2.1., 2.2. etc.), 3. Results and discussion (followed by sub-sections 3.1., 3.2. etc.), 4. Simplified description of the method and its (future) applications, Acknowledgements, References;

(b) contain an Abstract, not exceeding 200 words, at the beginning of the paper, followed by 3-6 key words;
(c)not exceed 10 printed pages (approximately 18 typewritten pages) including the space required for figures. Longer papers will be considered, but may be subject to delayed publication;

(d) contain a concluding paragraph which presents a simplified description of the method, its advantages and potential applications.

Full-length reviews should be on methodological advances only, usually on invitation from a member of the Editorial Board.

Short notes should, in principle, not exceed 2000 words, include an Abstract and key words, and contain only one figure but be adequately referenced.

Additional information: Authors are requested to submit together with their manuscript sufficient experimental results to substantiate the method described therein in order to facilitate critical and rapid refereeing. This information will be returned if requested.

References should be numbered singly in the order of citation in the text and listed in numerical sequence on a separate sheet. In the text they should be referred to by their numbers in square brackets, in line with the rest of the text. First and last relevant page numbers are to be included in the reference list. The abbreviations of periodical titles should conform to those adopted by List of Serial Title Word Abbreviations, International Serials Data System, 20 rue Bachaumont, 75002 Paris, France. ISBN 2-904938-02-8, and in the list citation of periodicals [1], books [2] and multi-author books [3] should accord with the following examples:

[1] Cannistraro, V.J., Hwang, P. and Kennell, D.E., Isolating and sequencing the infrequent 3 ends of a specific mRNA, J. Biochem. Biophys. Methods, 14 (1987) 211-222.

Authors are urged to follow the instructions given in Information for Contributors to Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, which is available free of charge from: BBA Editorial Secretariat, P.O. Box 1345, 1000 BH Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Tables should be typed double-spaced on separate sheets, numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, and only contain horizontal lines. A short descriptive title should appear above each table, with possible legend and footnotes (identified with a, b, c, etc.) below.

Figures should be line drawings in black ink or very sharp, well-contrasting prints on glossy paper suitable for immediate reproduction. Half-tone figures should be black-and-white, very sharp, well contrasting and on glossy paper. Figures should be completely lettered, the size of the lettering being appropriate to that of the drawing, taking into account the necessary reduction in size. All legends should be typed double-spaced on separate sheets. Tables, figures and photographs should be clearly marked on the reverse side with the number, author's name and orientation (top), using a soft pencil.

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author of an article, unless an alternative is requested on the title page of the manuscript. They should be checked carefully and returned by airmail within 2 days of receipt. Before mailing, corrected proofs should preferably be faxed to the editorial office (Fax: +353 61 709 109, Attn. C. Murphy). Only printer's errors may be corrected: no changes in or additions to the edited manuscript will be allowed at this stage.

Page charges will not be made.

Reprints may be ordered by filling in and returning to the Publishers the order form sent to the authors together with the author proof. Twenty five free reprints per contribution will be made available.

Authors can keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway
