About the journal

The Journal of Asian Natural Products Research (JANPR) publishes chemical and pharmaceutical studies in the English language in the field of natural product research on Asian ethnic medicine. The journal will publish work from scientists in Asian countries, e.g. China, Japan, Korea and India, including contributions from other countries concerning natural products of Asia. The journal is chemistry-orientated. Major fields to be covered are: isolation and structural elucidation of natural constituents (including those for non-medical uses), synthesis and transformation (including biosynthesis and biotransformation) of natural products, pharmacognosy, and allied topics. Biological evaluation of crude extracts are acceptable only as supporting data for pure isolates with well-characterized structures.

Instructions to Authors

NTRODUCTION

It is essential that authors prepare their manuscripts according to established specifications. The effectiveness of search capabilities offered by electronic delivery will depend upon the care used by authors in preparing a manuscript for submission, and in checking the manuscript for compliance with these notes before submitting it for publication.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

All manuscripts (one original and two double-sided copies) together with a covering letter from the author of correspondence should be submitted to the Editorial office of JANPR at the following address:

Tel: +81 3 5684 2617
Fax: +81 3 3816 0453
E-mail: coo402@simail.ne.jp

The language of publication in JANPR is English only, typewritten in a standard font on 22?8cm (A4) paper or produced on a high quality printer. All pages of the manuscript should be numbered and double-spaced with wide margins (3cm) and printed on good quality paper. Submission of papers to JANPR implies that they represent original research not previously published and that they are not being considered for publication elsewhere. It is a condition of acceptance by the editor of a typescript for publication that the publisher automatically acquires the copyright of the typescript throughout the world. There is no page charge. Rejected manuscripts will not be returned to the authors except for original illustrations.

DISK SUBMISSION

Authors should send the final, revised version of their article in both hard copy (paper) and electronic (disk) forms. It is essential that the hard copy (paper) version exactly matches the material on disk. Please print out the hard copy from the disk you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final version with the disk to the journal's editorial office. Save all files on a standard 3.5-inch high-density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word (PC format), but can translate from most other common word-processing programs as well as Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only.

COLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS

There are a limited number of colour pages within the annual page allowance. However, authors should restrict their use of colour to situations where it is necessary on scientific, and not merely cosmetic, grounds. In addition, authors may pay to publish colour illustrations, but please consult the publisher regarding cost before submission.

MANUSCRIPT CATEGORIES

Manuscripts may be submitted as Papers or Notes.

Papers are research articles, describing original experimental results. The material should be arranged in the following order: Abstract, Introduction, Results and Discussion, Experimental Section (Material and Methods). The Experimental Section should contain sufficient detail so that others are able to reproduce the experiment. The maximum length of a Paper is 2500 words or 10 typewritten pages.

Notes are abbreviated papers presented in the same general style as Papers. Generally, studies that are narrower in scope than published in papers are reported as Notes. Examples include the isolation and structure elucidation of simple analogues of known compounds. The publication of known compounds will be considered only if they have been demonstrated to possess potentially important bioactivity. Manuscripts solely reporting NMR assignments of known compounds will not be considered. For known compounds, authors should submit full experimental details of the isolation and identification data for consideration by the referees but not for publication. Full details of the isolation and identification procedures may be made available to the reader as supporting information.

Authors investigating the chemistry of single species should aim to publish their results in a single manuscript rather than in a series of manuscripts describing each new compound as it is found. Manuscripts that report fragmentary parts of a larger study will be returned to the authors at the editors' discretion.

CONTENT

Title page: The title should appear on a separate page and should be followed by the authors' surnames and initials, followed by his or her department, institution and address, including postcode and country. Each should be on separate lines and double spaced if there is more than one line. Please indicate the author for correspondence with an asterisk, whose telephone, fax and e-mail number also should be included.

Abstract: The abstract, detailing, in one paragraph, the problem, experimental approach, major findings, and conclusions, should appear on the second page. It should be double spaced and should not exceed 200 words for Papers or 50 words for Notes. Compounds mentioned in the abstract, and given as specific Arabic numerals in the text, should also be accompanied in the abstract by that same numeral.

Keywords: Each paper must have 3-6 keywords.

Text headings: Headings should be set over to the left-hand margin and the text should begin on the next line. Type first level (sectional) headings all in capitals. Second level headings should be typed in small (lower case) letters but with the first letter of each main word a capital. For third level headings, only the first letter of the first word should be a capital. Underline first and second level headings.
For example:

  • FIRST LEVEL TEXT HEADING
  • Text Heading
  • Third-level text heading

Introduction: The manuscript should include an untitled introduction stating the purpose of the investigation and relating the manuscript to similar research.

Results and Discussion: The results should be presented concisely. Tables and figures should be designed to maximise the presentation and comprehension of the experimental data. The discussion should interpret the results and relate them to existing knowledge in the field in as clear and brief a fashion as possible.

Experimental Section: The presentation of specific details about instruments used, sources of specialised chemicals, and related experimental details should be incorporated into the text of the Experimental Section as a paragraph headed General Experimental Procedures. In the separate paragraph experimental biological material should be reported as authenticated if cultivated or from a natural habitat, and herbarium deposit site should be reported. All micro-organisms used experimentally should bear a strain designation number and the culture collection in which they are deposited. The scientific name (genus, species, authority citation and family)should be presented when first mentioned in the body of the manuscript. Thereafter, the authority should be eliminated, and the generic name should be reduced (except in tables and figure legends) to the first capital letter of the name (but avoid ambiguity, if two or more generic names have the same first letter). If the biological material has not been identified as to species, the manuscript will not be considered for publication unless a special protocol has been followed, the particulars of which can be obtained by request from the Editor.

The kind and amount of material, solvents and extraction methods must be indicated. The description of chromatographic systems should contain the information that allows the reader repeat the work,e.g: "MPLC on silica gel (2?0cm), MeOH/EtOAc 8:2, 3ml/min; tR of 1 between 50 and 60ml, 2 120~140ml, 3 160~180ml; detection of eluates by TLC (see below )"or "TLC (silica gel ), EtOAc/CH2Cl2 85:15, detection Dragendorff reagent, Rf 1 0.35, 2 0.60, 3 0.75 " similar informations are necessary for HPLC,GLC, DCCC, MLCC and all other methods of purification.

Spectroscopic data should, in general, be presented as shown in the following example: Donnaienin A(1) was obtained as white, amorphous powder from hexane-EtOAc (1:4), 88mg, mp 96-980C,[a]D18-7.6(C 0.07, CHCl3); UV (MeOH) lmax(loge) 205(3.83), 248sh(3.07)nm; IR(KBr) nmax3390(OH), 2920 and 2850 (CH), 1762(lactone C=O), 1467(CH)cm-1; 1HNMR data, see Table 1; 13CNMR data, see Table 2; FABMS m/z [M+Na]+ 619(40); EIMS m/z [MH]+ 597(0.2), 579(2), 561(2), 543(3), 525(2), 379(3), 361(28), 343(12), 309(100), 291(15); anal.C 70.63%, H 10.97%, calcd for C35H64O7, C 70.47%, H 10.74%

References: References to the literature should be numbered in order of appearance in the manuscript and cited in the text with superscript Arabic numbers in brackets. Each reference should have its own citation number and follow the format shown:

The author is responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all references. Journal abbreviations should be those used by Chemical Abstracts.

It is assumed that, with the development of the World Wide Web (WWW), authors and/or the publisher will propose distribution of articles or parts of articles on the WWW. If the author knows the HTTP address of a referred article on the WWW, this information should be added at the end of the reference. Please use the following style:

where http://ww.blouk.com/article.html is the HTTP address.

Footnotes & Acknowledgements: Authors are encouraged to minimise the use of footnotes. A footnote may include the designation of a corresponding author of a paper, current address information for an author (if different from that shown in the affiliation), and traditional footnote content.

Information concerning grant support of research should appear in a separate Acknowledgements section at the end of the paper, not as a footnote. Acknowledgements of the assistance of colleagues or similar notes of appreciation also properly belong in an Acknowledgements section, not in the footnotes. They should be indicated in the text by the following symbols: * (asterisk or star), ?(a dagger), ?(double dagger), ?(paragraph mark), ?(section mark), || (parallels), # (number sign), for bibliographical reference call outs or exponents. Do not use numeral for footnote call outs as they may be mistaken. Type each footnote at the bottom of the typescript page on which its text call-out appears. Footnotes within a table should be indicated by the same symbols listed above. Reinitialise symbol sequence within tables. Type footnotes to a table directly beneath the table.

Abbreviations: Abbreviations are used without periods. Standard abbreviations should be used throughout the manuscript. All non-standard abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and must be defined in the text following their first use. The preferred forms of some of the more commonly used abbreviations are mp, bp, oC, K, s, min, h, ml, ml, kg, g, mg, mg, cm, mm, nm, mol, mmol, mmol, ppm, TLC, GC, NMR, UV and IR.

Figures: All figures should be numbered with consecutive Arabic numbers, have descriptive captions, and be mentioned in the text. Keep figures separate from the text, but indicate an approximate position for each in the margin.

Illustrations that are available in an electronic format are acceptable; please supply them on a separate disk. Please clearly indicate on the disk the file format and/or program used to produce them, and supply a high-quality hard copy of each illustration as well.

Preparation: Figures submitted must be of high enough standard for direct reproduction. Line drawings should be prepared in black ink on white paper, with all lettering and symbols included. Alternatively, good sharp photoprints ("glossies") are acceptable. Photographs intended for halftone reproduction must be good glossy original prints, of maximum contrast. Clearly label each figure with author's name and figure number; indicate "top" where this is not obvious. Redrawing or retouching of unusable figures will be charged to authors.

Size: The preferred width of line drawings is 20 to 23 cm. with capital lettering 4 mm. high, to accommodate reduction to single-column width. Photographs for halftone reproduction should be about twice the desired size.

Tables: Number tables consecutively with arabic numerals and refer to them in the text. Each table should contain a short descriptive caption at the top. Avoid the use of vertical lines to separate columns.

IR, NMR, MS and UV spectra should be given as figures only if new relationships between molecular structures and spectroscopic properties are demonstrated or if new compounds are described where the listing of characteristic signals is not sufficient. Figures of chromatograms will only be accepted if they are essential for understanding the methods or the results described.

X-Ray Crystallographic Data: Publications that contain the results of an X-ray crystallographic study must include a line drawing of the structure, a perspective drawing, and a discussion of bond lengths and angles. X-ray diffraction analysis (refined co-ordinates) can not be included in the text, but should be mailed together with the manuscript to the editor. A footnote should be added to this effect, such as "Crystallographic parameters have been deposited in the editorial office of JONPR."

Pharmacological Investigations: JONPR will only consider manuscripts in which conclusions are based on adequate statistics which account for the type of data distribution, on the number of experimental observations required for the application of the respective statistical method, and which incorporate the appropriate tests of significance. In each case positive controls should be used and the dose/dependence should be shown.

Text Call-Outs to Figures, Tables, Sections, Schemes: Text call-outs to figures, tables and other elements are the basis for searching articles on electronic delivery. Therefore, proper designation of text call-outs to figures and other elements is essential to the success of electronic delivery. When referring to a figure, table or other element within an article, always call the element by its full name: "See Table 1", "Figure 1 illustrates...", "Refer to Scheme 1". Do not use ambiguous call-outs (for example, "1 illustrates...") that do not clearly denote the element being referred to.

Submission of Animation:

Animations are limited to a time duration of 30 seconds. Animation should be submitted to the journal editor with the final manuscript, after it has completed the refereeing process.

Animations in the following forms (in order of preference) can be accepted from authors:

  • Video tape
  • AVI or Quick Time files
  • A sequence of still images

The following formats can be accepted:

  • all uncompressed formats widely used on PC, Mac and UNIX
  • JPEG for colored and compressed images
  • TIFF with a group IV compression for black and white compressed images
  • FLI and FLC format from AutoDesk.

Authors who submit animations are requested to provide the following information:

  • Video tape - format used.
  • AVI or QuickTime files - version used, and system used for disk file creation.
  • Sequence of still images - format used, version and system used for disk file creation.

Authors who are unable to supply video tape, AVI or QuickTime files may provide the publisher with a set of sequential still images. Note that an animated sequence will consist of 13 to 15 still images per second of animation; e.g., if an animated sequence is 10 seconds in duration, it is made up of 130 images.

Authors who are unable to submit in any of the above-mentioned formats are advised to contact the Publisher to discuss other options with the Publisher prior to submission.

Animation should be mentioned in the text. Indicate an approximate location for the animation call-out in the typescript margin.

PROOFS

The senior author will receive page proofs (for checking) by airmail to the address specified by the author in the letter of transmittal. Proofs must be returned to the printer within seven days of receipt. Authors' alternations in excess of 10% of the original composition cost will be charged to the authors.

EARLY ELECTRONIC OFFPRINTS

Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author抯 preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.

PAGE CHARGES

There are no page charges to individuals or institutions.

Supplementary Material

A fully completed CIF (Crystallographic Information File) should be deposited with the CCDC (send files as attachments to deposit@ccdc.cam.ac.uk) and the returned deposition number quoted in the experimental section of the manuscript.
