About the journal Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences is continuation of the journal Roczniki Nauk Rolniczych (since 1903), Ser. B. Zootechnika published in Polish by the Polish Academy of Sciences since 1969.
The present editor and publisher endeavour to publish all articles submitted to the Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences as rapidly as possible in perfect typographic condition.
Instructions to Authors
1. General information The Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences publishes original papers on basic and applied research in the field of animal breeding and genetics, physiology of nutrition, animal feeding, feed technology and food preservation. Occasional review articles in specialized fields are also accepted. Short communications, up to 1500 words, are particularly welcome. Ali papers must be written in clear and concise English. Foreign contributors are also welcome. Authors receive 25 free reprints of their paper instead of royalties. The editor and publisher request all authors to carefully observe the recommendations laid down in this Instructions to Authors.
2. Acceptance of manuscripts After receiving the opinions of the Editorial Board experts, the editor decides on acceptance of the articles, necessary corrections or revisions. Two copies of the manuscript with DD or HD diskette should be addressed directly to the Editorial Secretary of the Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences, Institute of Animal Physiology and Nutrition, 05-110 Jab硂nna near Warsaw, Poland. The day the manuscript reaches the editors for the first time is given upon publication as the date received. 3. Requirements for manuscripts
Form and size Manuscripts must by typewritten on one side with a left-hand margin of 4 cm and double-spaced. Inclusive of illustrations, tables and references, the article should not exceed 12 manuscript pages on the standard DIN A4 sheet.
Title This should be clear, descriptive, not too long but explanatory of the purpose of the paper. Author's names with initials and place where the work was carried out should be given.
Summary An English summary, not exceeding 150 words, should contain the most important results only. At the end of the article, an identical Polish summary should be enclosed on a separate sheet; the latter is not required from foreign contributors. Key words -list up to six key words which best describe the results and topics. Key words must be selected from the list provided from Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux Thesaurus.
Introduction The aim of the investigation should be given along with a brief review of previous relevant work with references.
Experimental The methods and materials used should be clearly stated in sufficient detail to permit the work to be repeated if desired. Only new techniques need be described in detail but known methods should have adequate references.
Results These should be presented concisely, using tables or illustrations for clarity. Adequate indication of the level of experimental error and the statistical significance of results should be given. The number of illustrations and graphical chemical formulae must be kept to a minimum. Main and subsidiary headings should be clearly distinguished.
Tables and illustrations Tables should be as simple and as few feasible for presentation of the essential data and should not exceed the printed area of the page. Tables on separate pages should be added to the manuscript and numbered according to their sequence in the text.
The text should include references to all tables and illustrations. Column heading should be brief, but sufficiently explanatory. Units of measurement should be added in parentheses. Explanations essential to the understanding of the table should be given in footnotes at the bottom of the table.
All illustration should be given separately, not stuck on pages and not folded, numbered according to their sequence in the text. Each illustration should be identified on the reverse side by its number and authors.
Each illustration should be accompanied by a caption on a separate sheet, added to the manuscript. Photographs (with two copies) are only acceptable if they have good contrast and intensity.
Discussion It is desirable that the presentation of the results and the discussion of their significance should be given separately.
Conclusions These should not merely repeat preceding sections.
References Ali publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references alphabetically according to authors surnames following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication.
If reference is made in the text to a publication written by more than two authors, the name of the first author should be used followed by "et al.". References cited together in the text should be arranged chronological.
The following system for arranging references should be used: for papers in periodicals: Mehrez A.Z., 0rskov E.R., 1977. A study of the artificial fibre bag technique for determining the digestibility of feeds in the rumen. J. Agric. Sci., Camb. 88, 645-650 for papers in edited volumens, symposia proceedings, special issues of periodicals, etc.: Van Soest P.J., Sniffen C.J., Martens D.R., Foxp.G., Robinson P.H., Kirenamoo駂y U., 1982. A net protein system for cattle: The rumen submodels for nitrogen. In: F.N. Ovens (Editor). Proceedings of an International Symposium on Protein Requirements for Cattle. Oklahoma State University, Still-water, OK, pp. 265-279 for books and edited volumes: 0rskov E.R., Ryle M. (Editors), 1990. Energy Nutrition in Ruminants. ElsevierApplied Science. London and New York, pp. 93 for multi-authors books: Sundstel F., Coxworth E.M., 1984. Ammonia treatment. In: F. Sundstol, E. Owen (Editors). Straw and other fibrous by-products as feed. Elsevier, Amsterdam-Oxford-New York-Tokyo, pp. 196-247
Different publications having the same author(s) and year should be distinguished by a, b, c, etc. immediately following the year of publication. Abbreviation of the titles of periodicals should be in accordance with International List of Periodical Title World Abbreviations, otherwise full name of periodicals should be given.
Units of measurement Ali units of measurements must follow the Sl system. The concentration of solutions should be given as molar concentration or expressed in percentages.
4. Supplements to the Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences are published at irregular intervals. Manuscripts on extensive experimental investigations, forming a self-contained unit, are of first consideration for publication in these supplements.
