Instructions to Authors
SUBJETS:
SuContributors are reminded, in choosing subjects for articles, that the objects of the Society are
'to promote the study and teaching of agricultural economics and relevant disciplines, and their application to issues in the agricultural, food and related industries, rural communities and the environment. The relevant disciplines include economics, statistics, marketing, business management, politics, history and sociology'
No rigid rules are applied but preference will be given to articles which either deal with new developments in research and methods of analysis, or apply existing methods and techniques to new problems and situations which are likely to be of general interest to the Journal's international readership. The Journal is generally not a suitable medium of publication for articles dealing with subjects of purely local interest.
The purpose and scope of the article should be clearly stated at the beginning, and contributors should show how it links up with, and develops, previous work on the subject. Articles should be clearly and concisely written and should normally not exceed 5,000 words. Articles greatly in excess of this limit cannot be considered for publication.T
TREATMENT:The Managing Editor and Co-Editors assess the initial suitability of articles submitted to the Journal of Agricultural Economics. Authors of submissions considered to be suitable for the JAE will be notified and their paper sent out to two editorial consultants who will referee the article for the Managing Editor. Unsuitable articles are returned to the authors. The refereeing process is "double-blind", in that the identity of the author remains anonymous to the referee and vice-versa. Authors may be asked to re-submit their article in revised form, and in all but exceptional circumstances, the Managing Editor will consider only one re-submission of the original article. Upon completion of the refereeing and editorial processes the authors will be notified of the Managing Editor's decision regarding publication
NOTES AND COMMENTS:Shorter papers and comments, of up to 1,000 words, will also be considered for publication. Such notes might appropriately deal with the economic aspects of current questions of agricultural policy, with the results of small research projects not justifying a full-length article, or comment shortly on articles previously published.
Anyone wishing to submit a comment on an article appearing in the JAE, should in the first instance, send a copy of their comment to the author. This enables clarification of any points of misunderstanding and also allows the author to prepare a reply in the same issue of the Journal. The Managing Editor has sole responsibility regarding the suitability of correspondence published in the Journal
A template of JAE houestyle, suitable for articles and notes can be downloaded (as a Word document file). Initial submissions do not need to be in house style, however please use the template if you wish. There is also a accompanying Guidance Sheet to help authors convert their manuscripts in to JAE house style.
Three copies of each article should be submitted, each with two cover sheets attached to the front of the paper, one with the authors' names, affiliations, email and postal address and one omitting that information. These sheets should also contain an abstract of no more than 150 words. Type should appear on one side of paper only in 12 point font, allowing ample space in the margins for referees' comments. Diagrams and tables should be printed on separate pages and capable of reduction to one-third or one-half of a page in the Journal. Diagrams and tables should be arranged, so far as possible, to go upright with figures and lettering horizontal. Mathematical equations should appear on a separate line with equation numbers (where necessary) aligned at the right hand margin. Where appropriate, full mathematical workings should accompany the articles in order to assist the referees. These workings will not be published.
References should be cited according to the Harvard System, i.e. author(s)' names and date of publication to be given in the body of the text and the reference collected alphabetically at then end of the paper. The title of the journal or source should be given in full.
In the case of articles quoting statistics (such as regression coefficients) based on unquoted data, authors should be prepared to send the Editor a copy of the data and details of the methodology used (possibly in the form of a self-explanatory computer printout) so that the referee may test the derivation of such statistics. Authors should also be prepared to supply such additional material to responsible enquirers (at some reasonable price, if necessary).
Three copies of the manuscript should be sent to:
Dr. T. Lloyd, Managing Editor, Journal of Agricultural Economics, School of Economics, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham, NG7 2RD United Kingdom
Authors of articles accepted for publication will be asked to supply the final version in hard copy and on floppy disc as text only (ascii file) format. Diagrams, tables and equations should not be included in the text but their location should be clearly marked. additional separated files containing tables, diagrams and equations may also be included on the disc to assist the typesetting process and should be clearly labelled on the front of the disc with the program (version) identified. Disc copies are not required for original submissions; only those that have been accepted for publication.

There are no page charges or submission fees at the Journal of Agricultural Economics, although at least one author of a submission should be a fully paid-up member of the Agricultural Economics Society in the year of submission. Non-members wishing to submit an article are required to join the Society and should attach a completed Membership Application Form and payment with their submission.
25 reprints are supplied free and additional quantities at cost, which will be notified at time proofs are sent. Orders must be received with corrected proofs: any later requests involve a special printing and will be charged at heavily increased rates.
General information and enquiries should be addressed to the JAE Secretary, Mrs June Boot at the address given above. Telephone: 44(0)115 951 4763, Facsimile: 44 (0)115 951 4159, E-mail: june.boot@nottingham.ac.uk.
The Managing Editor invites the submission of books, software and teaching resources for review. Material sent for review should be written in English and be of interest to students, academics, Civil servants or practitioners of agricultural economics and its related fields.
The Managing Editor also welcomes expressions of interest of forthcoming books or books that have been published but not received by the Journal. In such circumstances the Managing Editor will liaise with the publisher to obtain the material for the reviewer. New (or young) members of the Society are particularly encouraged to contribute to the Review Section and anyone wishing to act as a reviewer should contact the Managing Editor in the first instance. Reviews are typically around 1500 words in length and should be completed within three months of receipt.
