Preparation of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be submitted double-spaced on 81/2" X 11" paper. Leave ample margins on sides, top, and bottom of page. Submit the original and three copies, including original illustrations, figures, and tables. Disk submission is required, and the disk must match the hard copy exactly. Disks may be submitted in either PC or Macintosh formats, preferably in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. The title page should include the authors?names and affiliations, the source of a work or study (if any), and a running title of about 45 characters. Please indicate academic degrees and affiliations of all authors and the name, address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed. The second page should consist of an abstract of not more than 250 words, which should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. The manuscript should follow this format: abstract; introduction; materials and methods; results; discussion; acknowledgments; and references. Number pages consecutively. At the end of the manuscript, give the name and address of the individual to whom reprint requests should be directed. For all material sources, such as devices, drugs, etc., indicate manufacturer/supplier name, city, state, and country. After review, final manuscripts should be submitted as hard copy and on disk (see above), with the art separated from the text, with figure captions separated from the art and the text, and each table on its own page. Art is to be simple and reducible to 60% with labels still readable.
Tables and Figures. (1) Type tables double-spaced, one to a page and placed after the references. Each table must stand alone, i.e., contain all necessary information in the caption and be understood independently of the text. Avoid repetition of information that is given in the text. Each table must have a title. (2) Graphs and similar figures should be professionally drawn in black ink (not blue). Glossy, black-and-white photographs and high-quality laser prints are also acceptable. A list of figure legends should be supplied at the end of the manuscript, double-spaced. For e-mailing attachment files, first contact us for instructions. (3) The Journal will publish color photographs or color line art, but the author will be charged for the cost. Color seperations and printing are at the rate of $275 per piece of color art plus $1,200 per page of color. The Publisher will provide the author with a more precise cost estimate when the figures are received. Articles with color art will not be reviewed unless authors specifically state that they will pay the costs at the time of manuscript submission.
Footnotes. Type footnotes double-spaced on a separate page. Footnotes should be used only when essential.
Acknowledgments. Collaborations, sources of research funds, and other acknowledgments should be listed in a separate section at the end of the text ahead of the REFERENCES section.
References. All references must be cited in the text with superscript numbers in parentheses, in numerical order beginning with one. References must be typed double-spaced and numbered by order of citation. All authors?names must be listed (do not use 揺t al.?. Translate into English all foreign article and book titles. If a work is in press, give the journal in which it is to be published. Submitted manuscripts not yet accepted for publication and personal communications should be cited in the text only. Journal abbreviations should follow Index Medicus style.
