About the journal
The Journal is published twice yearly by Teagasc (Agriculture and Food Development Authority), Dublin. Papers on any aspect of agricultural research, including plant and animal sciences, food science, soils, engineering, buildings, economics and sociology will be considered for publication. Notes or Communications to the Editor will also be considered. Papers published or offered for publication elsewhere will not be accepted, but the publication of an abstract does not preclude publication of the full paper in this Journal. Opinions expressed in papers are those of the contributors
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts (three copies) should be addressed to Helen O'Donnell, Teagasc, 19 Sandymount Avenue, Dublin 4.
Manuscripts
Papers, written in English, should be printed in double spacing on one side of the page with a left and right margin of 25 mm. Each page should be numbered and lines should be numbered beginning with 1 at the top of each page. Communications to the Editor (Notes) should not exceed 2,000 words or the equivalent inclusive of tables and illustrations.
The following format, though not absolutely rigid, is recommended:
- Title, author(s) name(s), place where work was carried out
- Abstract
- Text of paper ?(a) Introduction, (b) Materials and Methods, (c) Results, (d) Discussion, (e) Acknowledgements
- References
- Tables (one per page) with captions
- Figures
- Captions for figures and photographs
Abstracts should be intelligible without reference to the paper. Outline the purpose and methods of the work and important findings and conclusions. Do not exceed 250 words for papers or 100 words for Notes.
Abbreviations: The International System of Units (SI) should be used.
Keywords: Authors must include a list of not more than five keywords or two- to three-word phases. They must also supply a short title of not more than 50 characters.
References: In the text a reference should be quoted by the author's name and date (in parentheses). Where there are three authors, all names should appear at the first mention; thereafter, and at all times if there are four or more authors, the first name followed by et al. should be used.
The list of references at the end of the text should be in alphabetical order and set out as in the following examples:
Byrne, E. 1979. "Chemical Analysis of Agricultural Materials". An Foras Taluntais, Dublin, 194 pages.
Authors must ensure that all references in the text appear at the end of the paper and vice versa, and that names and dates correspond in the two places.
Tables must be self-explanatory. Numerous small tables or unduly large and complex ones should be not be used. Avoid the overuse of significant digits which may suggest false or unwarranted precision. The level of experimental error and the statistical significance of the results should be given. Levels of statistical significance should be indicated as follows without explanation:
* = P<0.05, ** = P<0.01, *** = P<0.001
Figures and photographs: Draw figures in black on white or colourless medium with captions on a separate page. Avoid use of heavy-weight lines. Conform to dimensions of journal page (133 x 184 mm), allowing for the caption and margins.
Submit black and white photographs only, on glossy paper, with strong contrasts.
Reprints: Fifty offprints of each paper, without covers, are supplied free. More offprints may be purchased if requested when returning galley proofs.
