Instructions to Authors
INTERNATIONAL SURGERY invites submission of papers on clinical, experimental, cultural and historical topics pertinent to surgery and related fields. Manuscripts should be prepared as described in the following instructions and addressed to:
Nadey S. Hakim, MD, Phd Editor, International Surgery 34 Hocroft Road London NW2 2BL, UK nadey@globalnet.co.uk
Three copies of the manuscript and illustrations should be submitted in addition to one copy on a disk. International Surgery regrets it will have to decline consideration of any article which does not conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals, as reported in JAMA 1997; 277: 927-934.
Preparation of manuscript. Type manuscript on white bond paper, 29x21 cm with margins of at least 2.5 cm. Use double spacing throughout. Begin each of the following sections on a separate page: title page, abstract and key words, text, acknowledgements, references, tables and captions. Number pages consecutively, beginning with the title page. Type the page number in the upper right corner of each page.
Title page. The title page should contain the following: (1) the title of the article - this should be concise but informative; (2) a short running headline of no more than 55 characters (including letters and spaces) placed at the foot of the title page; (3) first name, middle initial and last name of each author, with highest academic degrees; (4) name of department(s) and institution(s) to which the work should be attributed; (5) disclaimers, if any; (6) name and address of author responsible for correspondence regarding the manuscript; (7) name and address of author to whom requests for reprints should be addressed, or statement that reprints will not be available from the author; (8) the source(s) of support in the form of grants, equipment, drugs or all of these.
Abstract. An informative abstract of not more than 150 words must accompany each manuscript; it should be suitable for use by abstracting journals and include data on the problem, method and materials, results and conclusion. Emphasize new and important aspects of the study or observations. Use only approved abbreviations. Uninformative abstracts (e.g. 'the data will be discussed') are not acceptable.
Key (indexing) terms. Below the abstract, provide and identify as such, three to 10 key words or short phrases that may be published with the abstract and that will assist indexers in cross-indexing your article. Use terms from the Medical Subject headings list from Index Medicus whenever possible.
Introduction. Acquaint the readers with the problem and with the findings of others. Quote the most pertinent papers. It is not necessary to include all the background literature. State clearly the nature and purpose of the work.
Materials and Methods. Explain clearly yet concisely your clinical, technical or experimental procedures. Previously published methods should be cited, with appropriate references.
Results. Describe your findings without comment. Include a concise textual description of the data presented in tables, charts, and figures.
Discussion. Comment on your results and relate them to those of other authors. Define their relevance to experimental research or clinical practice. Arguments must be well founded.
References. Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends by arabic numerals. References cited only in tables or in captions to figures should be numbered according to a sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or illustration. Use the form of references adopted by the US National Library of Medicine and used in Index Medicus. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. All authors' names should be included for up to six authors, and the first six for seven and over. Personal communications, unpublished data or articles published without peer review, including materials appearing in programs of meetings or in organizational publications, should not be included. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of their references.
Tables. Tables should be self-explanatory and should supplement, not duplicate, the text. Since the purpose of a table is to compare and classify related items, the data should be logically organised. Type each table (double-spaced) on a separate sheet. Do not submit tables as photographs. Number tables consecutively and supply a brief title for each. Give each column a short or abbreviated heading. Place explanatory matter in footnotes, not in the heading. Explain in footnotes, all non-standard abbreviations that are used in each table. Omit horizontal and vertical rules. Cite each table in the text in consecutive order. If you use data from another published or unpublished source, obtain permission and acknowledge fully.
Illustrations. Use only those illustrations that clarify and increase understanding of the text. All illustrations must be numbered and cited in the text. Three glossy print photographs of each illustration should be submitted. The following information should be typed on a label and affixed to the back of each illustration: figure number, title of manuscript, name of senior author and arrow indicating the top. Original drawings, graphs, charts and lettering should be prepared on illustration board of high grade white drawing paper by an experienced medical illustrator. Typewritten or freehand lettering is not acceptable.
Captions for illustrations. Type captions for illustrations double-spaced, starting on a separate page with arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations. When symbols, arrows, numbers, or letters are used to identify parts of the illustration, identify and explain each clearly in the caption. Explain internal scale and identify the method of staining in photomicrographs.
Checklist. Please check each item of the following check-list before mailing your manuscript.
1. Letter of submission. 2. Author's Declaration. 3. Three copies of the manuscript arranged in the following order: Title page [title, running head, author(s) with highest academic degree(s), departments(s) and institution(s), disclaimers, name(s) and address(es) for correspondence and reprints (including the e-mail address of the corresponding author), source(s) of support]. Abstract and Key words. Text (introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion). References listed consecutively. Tables. Illustrations properly labeled. Captions for illustrations. 4. Statistical review. 5. Supplementary material (e.g. permission to reproduce published material).
AUTHORS' DECLARATION. All manuscripts must be accompanied by the following statement, signed by each author.
In consideration of the action taken by International Surgery, in reviewing and editing my (our) submission, the under-signed author(s) hereby transfers, assigns, or otherwise conveys all copyright ownership and right of republication to International Surgery in the event that the same work be published by International Surgery. The authors(s) warrants that the article is original, is not under consideration by any other journal and has not previously been published. Furthermore, the author(s) warrants that all investigations reported in the publication were conducted in conformity with the Recommendations from the Declaration of Helsinki and the International Guiding Principles for Biomedical Research Involving Animals.
