About the journal
The relevance of psychobiological, psychological, social, familial, religious, and cultural factors in the development and treatment of illness; the relationship of patients to caretakers, and of both to illness; the impact of medicine's changing style on the broad scope of health care; the individualized significance of disease to a spectrum of people.
Instructions to Authors
- Submissions should address biopsychosocial aspects of medical and surgical care on topics ranging from biological psychiatry to social, religious, and cultural influences on medical treatment and disease outcome (see inside of cover). For more information about specific areas of interest, see Editorial, International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine 2000;30(3): 195-202.
- Require all co-authors to read final submitted draft carefully and comprehensively. Preliminary review by senior colleagues and science editors is also strongly encouraged. All submissions must be in English and grammatically well-written.
- Place mailing address and e-mail address of corresponding author on title page of manuscript. Send five (5) copies with minimum of one-inch margins, and retain a copy; include manuscript on diskette in Microsoft Word or Word Perfect word-processing format. Alternatively, rather than submitting by mail, authors may e-mail cover letter and manuscript (Original artwork must be mailed) to koenig@geri.duke.edu. Only original artwork may be returned.
- Type on one side of 8-1/2" x 11" white paper. Double space everywhere. Number all pages starting with the title page.
- Arrange in the following order with each item beginning a new page: Title page, Abstract, Text, Acknowledgments, References, Tables/Figures.
- Abstract should be a single paragraph ±250 words, structured with headings and the following information: Objective–study questions or primary purpose of the article; Method–subjects, design, measurements, data analysis, or number and method of selecting studies for review article; Results–key findings; Conclusions–implications, future directions.
- After abstract include about 3-10 index words (from MeSH list of Index Medicus) and "(Int’l. J. Psychiatry in Medicine 199-;26:000-000)".
- Text should include four major sections with headings: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion. Method section should provide a comprehensive description of the subjects (including informed consent), recruitment, procedures, measurement (including information about reliability as appropriate), and data analysis (or synthesis for reviews). Discussion should include implications and limitations of the study.
- Report grant, drug company, or any other financial support in Acknowledgments.
- References are cited in text in numerical order with bracket [1], and are listed in numerical sequence at the end of the article: All authors, Article title. Journal Title (spelled out) Year; Volume Number: Pages inclusive. e.g., Smith J, Jones RK. This is it. World Research Journal 1991;41:1-10. Jones RK, Smith J. Primary care. In: Well IM, editor. All we know. Amityville, NY: Baywood, 1996:18-50.
- Tables must be cited in text in numbered sequence starting with Table 1 (even if only one table.) Each table must have a descriptive title. Any footnotes to tables are indicated by super lower case letters. Tables should be typed on separate pages and their approximate placement indicated within text by inserting:

- Figures should be referenced in text and appear in numerical sequence starting with Figure 1 (even if only one figure). Line art must be original drawings in black ink proportionate to our page size, and suitable for photographing. Indicate top and bottom of figure where confusion may exist. Labeling should be 8 point type. Clearly identify all figures. Figures should be drawn on separate pages and their placement noted by inserting:

Authors will receive twenty complimentary reprints of their published article. Additional reprints may be ordered.
