Instructions to Authors

Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted in quadruplicate and complete in all respects (including four copies of all illustrations), and deal with original material not previously published, or being considered for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief, R.J. Ruben, Dept. of Otorhinolaryngology, Montefiore Medical Center, The University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, 3400 Bainbridge Avenue, 3rd Floor, Bronx, NY 10467-2490, USA; Tel: (718)920-2484; Fax: (718)515-7940; E-mail: ruben@aecom.yu.edu. On submission, all authors of the paper listed should sign a letter in which they state they have al participated sufficiently in the conception and design of the work, in the analysis of the data and in writing the manuscript to take public responsibility for it. If accepted, the manuscript shall not be published elsewhere in the same form, in either the same or another language, without the consent of the Editors and publisher. Authors must include the following contact details on the title page of their submitted manuscripts: name; full postal address; Fax; Tel; E-mail.

Ethical standards.

Human subject experiments should be in accordance with the ethical standards of responsible committee at the institute where the research is carried out and with the Helsinki Declaration. Animal studies should also be carried out within recognized guide-lines for the care of laboratory animals.

Electronic manuscripts

Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs. For the initial submission of manuscripts for consideration, paper versions are sufficient. For the processing of accepted papers, your diskette plus three final and exactly matching printed versions should be submitted together. Please use new correctly formatted, HD or DD, 5?or 3?inch diskettes. It is important that the file is saved in the native format of the word processing program used. Label the diskette with type of computer (IBM, NEC, Macintosh) and word processing program used, your name and the name of the file(s) on the disk.

Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be written in English. Authors whose native language is not English are strongly advised to have their manuscripts checked by an English-speaking colleague prior to submission. (Authors in Japan please note: Upon request, Elsevier Science Japan will provide authors with a list of people who can check and improve the English of their paper (before submission). Please contact our Tokyo office: Elsevier Science, Japan, 9-15, Higashi-Azabu 1-chome, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0044; Japan; Tel: (+81)3-5561-5032; Fax: (+81)3-5561-5045; E-mail: info@elsevier.co.jp). Manuscripts must be submitted in four copies in double-spaced typing with at least a 4 cm margin on pages of uniform size.

As a rule Papers, Review Articles and Case Reports should be divided into sections headed by a caption (e.g. Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, etc.).

The abstract is essential and the most read part of the paper. The abstract should be informative, not descriptive, and should be free of abbreviations except for units of measure. The abstract should be printed on a separate sheet. An abstract for an original article not exceed 350 words and should be structured into four paragraphs: (1) Objective: should concisely describe (a) the problem addressed in the study and (b) the purpose(s) of the study, (2) Methods: explains concisely how the study was performed (basic procedures with study material and observational and analytical methods). (3) Results: should describe the main finding with specific data and their statistical significance, if possible. (4) Conclusions: contains the principal conclusions of the study. Abstracts for case reports should not exceed 100 words and should not have a structured format. Following the abstract, up to 6 keywords are to be given for subject indexing. They should be taken from Index Medicus or composed on similar lines.

If illustrations or other small parts of articles or books already published elsewhere are used in papers submitted to the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, the written permission of author and publisher concerned must be included with the manuscript. The original source must be indicated in the legend of the illustration in these cases.

Authors' full names, academic or professional affiliations, and complete addresses should be included on a separate title page. The name and address of the author to whom proofs and correspondence are to be sent should be given.

References

(1) All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names are exactly the same in the text and in the list of references. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their references and for correct text citation.

(2) References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned. In the text they should be cited with Arabic numerals between square brackets. For listing references, follow the JAMA style, abbreviating names of journals according to Index Medicus. List all authors/editors but if there are more than six, list the first six plus et al.

Examples:

[1] Froehlich P, Seid AB, Morgon A. Contrasting strategic approaches to the management of subglottic hemangiomas. Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol 1996;36:137-146.

Illustrations

(1) One set of original figures and three sets of copies should be submitted with the manuscript. All illustrations (line drawings and photographs) should be submitted separately unmounted and not folded.
(2) Illustrations should be numbered with Arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text. References should be made in the text, as Fig. 1, Fig. 2, to each illustration.
(3) Each illustration should be identified on the reverse side (or, in the case of line drawings, on the lower front side) by its number and the name of the author. An indication of the top of the illustration is required in photographs and other cases where doubt can arise.
(4) Illustrations should be designed with the format of the page of the journal in mind. Illustrations and lettering should be of such a size as to allow a photographic reduction of 50% without becoming illegible. Explanations should preferably be given in the typewritten legend. Drawn text in the illustrations should be kept to a minimum
(5) If scales are required, use bar scales on the illustration itself instead of numerical magnification factors.
(6) Each illustration should have a legend. The legends to all illustrations should be typed together on a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript.
(7) Photographs are only acceptable if they have good contrast and intensity. Sharp and glossy copies are required. Reproductions of photographs already printed cannot be accepted.
(8) Colour illustrations can only be included, if the cost of reproduction is paid for by the author or a sponsor. (For more information: call +353- 61-709600.)

Tables

Tables of numerical data should each be typed (also with double spacing) on a separate page, numbered in sequence in Arabic numerals (Table 1, 2, etc.), provided with a heading, and referred to in the text as Table 1, Table 2, etc.

Proofs

Authors should keep a copy of their manuscripts as proofs will be sent to them without manuscript. Only printer's errors may be corrected; no change in, or additions to, the edited manuscript will be allowed at this stage.

Offprints

Fifty offprints of each article will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered by the authors. An order form containing price quotations will be sent to the corresponding author.
