About the journal
The International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia is the only journal publishing original articles devoted exclusively to obstetric anesthesia and bringing together all three of its principal components:
· anesthesia for operative delivery
· pain relief in labour and
· care of the critically ill obstetric patient.
· Original research (both clinical and laboratory), short reports and case reports will be considered.
· The journal also publishes invited review articles and debates on topical and controversial subjects in the area of obstetric anesthesia.
· Articles on related topics such as perinatal physiology and pharmacology and all subjects of importance to obstetric anaesthetists/anesthesiologists are also welcome.
The journal is peer-reviewed by international experts. Scholarship is stressed to include the focus on discovery, application of knowledge across fields, and informing the medical community. Through the peer-review process, we hope to attest to the quality of scholarships and guide the journal to extend and transform knowledge in this important and expanding area.
Official journal of the Obstetric Anaesthetists' Association (OAA). Members of the OAA receive the journal as a benefit of their membership.
Affiliated with the Club Italiano Anestesisti Ostetrici, Club d'Anesthesie-Reanimation en Obstetrique, and Norsk Interesse gruppe for Obstetrisik Interesserte Anestesileger

whichever is most convenient, but do not submit to both Editors.
The Editors cannot accept responsibility for damage to or loss of manuscripts. Rejected papers will not be returned to authors except on request. A paper that contains the results of human and/or animal studies will only be accepted for publication if it is made clear that a high standard of ethics was applied in carrying out the investigation. In the case of invasive studies of humans, the text should include a statement that the research protocol was approved by a local institutional review board or ethics committee. The Editors reserve the right to make editorial and literary corrections. Any opinions expressed or policies advocated do not necessarily reflect the opinions or policies of the Editors.
Papers and letters may be submitted on a 3.5" floppy disc or by email, in which case a single hard copy of the text and illustrations should also be supplied accompanied by a letter of submission stating that it has not been published elsewhere and has not been submitted simultaneously to another journal. Alternatively, papers may be submitted by mail, in which case three copies of the typescript and illustrations should be supplied.
The following instructions are in accordance with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. Br Med J 1998: 296: 401-405.
Papers should be submitted in journal style. Failure to do so may lead to significant delays in publication. Spelling may be British or American but must be consistent. Please type in double spacing throughout on good, white paper with a margin of at least 2.6 cm all round. Type on one side of the paper only.
Papers should be set out as follows: title page, summary and key words, text, acknowledgements, references, tables, captions to illustrations, with each section beginning on a separate sheet.
Title page. The title page should give the following information: (1) title of the article; (2) initials and name of each author; (3) name and brief address of the department or institution to which the work should be attributed; (4) any further author details as is desired, together with the name, full postal address, telephone number and e-mail address of the author responsible for correspondence and to whom requests for offprints should be sent; (5) sources of support in the form of grants; and (6) short title of no more than 50 characters.
Summary. This should consist of not more than 250 words summarising the contents of the article and should contain no references. Followed by key words.
Text. Headings should be appropriate to the nature of the paper. In general those for experimental papers should follow the usual conventions. Methods, Results, Discussion etc. do not need to be on separate sheets. Other papers can be subdivided as the author desires; the use of headings enhances readability.
Reference format The accuracy of references is the responsibility of the author. References should be entered consecutively by superscript arabic numbers in the text after punctuation and not preceded by spaces. The references should be listed in numerical order on a separate sheet in double spacing. References to journals should include the author's name and initials (list all authors when six or fewer; when seven or more, list only the first three and add et al.), full title of the paper, journal title abbreviated using Index Medicus abbreviations, year of publication, volume number, first and last page numbers. If not in Index Medicus journal titles should be given in full.
For example: Kleinberg D L, Noll G L, Frantz A G. Galactorrhoea: a study of 235 cases, including 48 with pituitary tumours. N Engl J Med 1977; 296: 589-600.
References to books should be set out as follows: Bridenbaugh P O, Greene N M. Spinal (subarachnoid) neural blockade. In: Cousins M K, Bridenbaugh PO, eds. Neural Blockade in Clinical Anesthesia and Management of Pain. Philadelphia: JB Lippincott, 1988: 213-251.
Figures Line illustrations. All line illustrations should present a crisp black image on an even white background (127 x 173 mm [5 x 7 in], or no larger than 203 x 254 mm [8 x 10 in]). The size of the letters should take into account the necessary size reduction. For electronic submission figures should be included in a separate file. Photographic illustrations and radiographs should be submitted as clear, highly contrasted black and white prints (unmounted), sizes as above. X-ray film should be submitted as photographic prints, carefully made to bring out the detail to be illustrated, with an overlay indicating the area of importance. Illustrations must be clearly marked (by a label pasted on the back or by a soft crayon) with the figure number and author's name and the top of the figure should be illustrated with an arrow. Never use ink of any kind. Do not use paperclips as these can scratch or mark illustrations. Illustrations in colour cannot be accepted unless the cost is met by the author. Captions should appear at the end of the text file on a separate sheet after the references, and not on the figures. Patient confidentiality. Where illustrations must include recognisable individuals, living or dead and of whatever age, it is essential that consent for publication has been given by patient or relative. If identifiable features are not essential to the illustration, please indicate where it can be masked.
Tables should be typed double spaced each on a separate sheet and contain only horizontal rules. Do not submit tables as photographs. A short descriptive title should appear above each table and any footnotes, suitably identified, below. Ensure that all units are included.
Ensure that each table and figure is cited in correct order in the text.
Units & Abbreviations Avoid abbreviations in the title and summary. All unusual abbreviations should be fully explained at their first occurrence in the text. Avoid numerous invented abbreviations. All measurements should be expressed in metric units, SI units being preferred except in the case of fluid pressures. For more detailed recommendations, authors may consult the Royal Society of Medicine publication: Units, Symbols and Abbreviations: A Guide for Biological and Medical Editors and Authors.
Proprietary names of drugs, instruments etc. if essential, should start with initial capital letters.
Disk/Electronic Submission The accepted version of your article must be submitted on disk or by email. Send 3.5 inch disks prepared on PC or Macintosh compatible hardware and software. We prefer text in Microsoft Word. Tables should be in a separate file and formatted with tabs rather than spaces. Figures should be sent as hard copy and electronically, in a separate file.
Copyright Information In order for us to ensure maximum dissemination and copyright protection of material published in the Journal, copyright must be explicitly transferred from author to publisher. A copyright transfer form will be sent to the corresponding author when the paper is received by the publisher. A copy of this agreement must be signed before any paper can be published. You are free to use material contained in your paper without requesting permission, however, provided acknowledgement is made to the journal as the original source of publication.
Permission to reproduce borrowed material. Written permission to reproduce borrowed illustrations or tables must be obtained from the original publishers and authors, and submitted with the typescript. Borrowed material should be acknowledged in the captions in this style: 'Reproduced by the kind permission of ... (author and publisher) from ... (reference)'.
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for checking, normally by email as a pdf file. Any corrections must be sent to the production editor at Elsevier within 48 hours of receipt., preferably by email. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments may be charged to the author. Queries should be answered in full. Elsevier will do everything possible to correct and publish your article as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive email or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible.
