About the journal
The International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research publishes papers in the field of nutrition research that contain new and significant information of general interest. The primary focus of the journal is vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and minor plant components. Papers related to basic and clinical nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, diet and health, nutrition in prevention and therapy, dietetics, interaction of foodstuffs, nutritional pharmacology, as well as analytic methods in nutrition will be considered. However, articles in the area of animal husbandry and poultry science do not have first priority. Furthermore, the journal offers the possibility to publish preliminary results of current research in the form of research notes. Reviews and abstracts of meetings are accepted in exceptional cases. Only original papers will be considered. Submission of a manuscript implies that the same work has not been published and is not under consideration elsewhere. It is furthermore the responsibility of the corresponding author to obtain the agreement of all co-authors of the paper prior to submission to the journal. This should be stated in the letter accompanying the manuscript. Authors are encouraged to suggest three reviewers for their papers, but the journal has no obligation to follow these suggestions. Authors may also indicate names of experts they wish to have excluded from the reviewing process. In order to allow the reviewers to assess possible overlaps with current research, the authors should include copies of their work either in press or under consideration in other journals.
Instructions to Authors
Ethics of investigation on human subjects: In manuscripts describing research on humans, the authors should include a statement that the protocol was reviewed and approved by the appropriate Ethical Committee.
Preparation of manuscripts: Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal to make themselves familiar with the general style and layout. Manuscripts should be written in clear and grammatical English. Contributors, particularly those not familiar with English usage, are encouraged to seek help of colleagues in the preparation of their work. Manuscripts that are not adequately prepared will be returned to the authors. The text should be written doubled-spaced (2530 lines per page) on numbered sheets of uniform size with a wide margin of at least 5 cm on the left.
Research papers. These full-length papers are the normal form of publication. As a guide, most research papers are between 5 and 7 printed pages and a full page of text contains approximately 850860 words (allowance must be made for the space occupied by tables and figures). The text should be arranged in the following order:
| i) |
The First page should contain a concise but informative title. The use of abbreviations should be avoided. The authors' names should appear below the title with the first or middle name of each author spelled out in full. Next, the address of the laboratory (or laboratories) where the work was carried out (in the language of the country or in English) should be given together with the fax number of the institution and the E-mail address. If the work was carried out in more than one laboratory, the names of the authors should be followed by superscript numbers, which should precede the names of the corresponding laboratories. A running title not exceeding 48 letters and spaces should beincluded.510 key words should be given to be used in the annual subject index. |
| ii) |
The Abstract should not exceed 200 words and should be intelligible without reference to other parts of the paper. Specialized terms and abbreviations should be avoided. |
| iii) |
Introduction. The purpose of the work in relation to other research in the field should be briefly stated, avoiding thereby an extensive review of the literature. |
| iv) |
Materials and Methods or Subjects and Methods. This section should be brief but include enough information to permit repetition of the work. |
| v) |
Results may be presented in tables or figures, but many simple findings can be set forth directly in the text. Tables must carry a title and should be typed on separate sheets and be intelligible without reference to the text. One set of figures with lettering should be suitable for reproduction, i.e. sharp glossy prints, drawings in black ink, good quality computer printouts or halftone figures. Legends to figures should be typed on a separate sheet.
|
| vi) |
The Discussion should not consist of a recapitulation of the results but deal with their interpretation. Excessive speculation should be avoided. In some cases combining Results and Discussion in one section may provide a clearer presentation.

References must be cited in the text by numbers in square brackets, e.g. [1], in numerical order of their citation. In the reference list they should be cited in numerical order as follows: Journals: Jones, A.C., Brown, B. and Miller, D. (1996) Title of the article. Internat. J. Vit. Nutr. Res. 66, 110; Books: Brown, B. and Jones, A.C. (1990) Book title, pp 2032, publisher, city; Articles in books: Brown, B. (1994) Title of the article. In: Book title. (Little, C., ed.) vol. 2, pp. 119, publisher, city. Please use a new line for every reference. |
| ix) |
Non-standard abbreviations should be defined in a footnote written on a separate page. Otherwise footnotes should be avoided. At the end of the manuscript the postal address of the corresponding author should be given. This person will receive the galley proofs of the paper in due course. |

Research notes can be used for publication of preliminary results of current research. They should not exceed 23 printed pages including not more than 23 tables and figures and less than 10 references. A short summary is required as well as a running title and 35 key words.
Reviews will usually be solicited by the Editorial Board although unsolicited reviews will also be considered for publication. In this case, the authors should first consult the Editor-in-Chief and should enclose a short summary of the area they propose to cover.
Abstracts and proceedings of meetings are published only in exceptional cases either as part of a regular issue or in a supplementum. For additional information please contact the Editor-in-Chief.
Procedure for submission: Three copies of the manuscript with a brief covering letter should be sent to:
International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research, Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Richard Hurrell, Laboratory for Human Nutrition, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich, Postfach 474/Seestrasse 72, CH-8803 Rüschlikon, Switzerland
The top copy of the manuscript should be marked as such and should include the original figures and tables. The covering letter should include the statements concerning originality of the work and agreement of all co-authors (see the second paragraph of these instructions, in the chapter ??General??).
Diskettes of manuscripts: Authors should submit diskettes of the accepted version of their manuscript to the Editorial Office. Every effort will be made to use the diskette during typesetting. Authors must ensure that their files have been updated to incorporate all the revisions and that the version on the diskette corresponds to the accepted paper (hard form). We will try to accommodate all hardware and software systems, however we prefer Word for Windows. Diskettes of accepted manuscripts will not be returned to the authors.
Copyright: The author confirms and guarantees on behalf of him-/herself and any co-authors that he or she holds all copyright in and titles to the submitted contribution, including any figures, photographs, line drawings, plans, maps, sketches, and tables, and that the article and its contents do not infringe in any way on the rights of third parties. Upon acceptance of the article for publication, the author agrees to transfer to the publisher the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute the article and its contents, both physically and in non-physical, electronic, or other form, in the journal to which it has been submitted and in other independent publications, with no limitations on the number of copies or on the form or the extent of distribution. These rights are transferred for the duration of copyright as defined by Swiss law. Furthermore, the author transfers to the publisher the following exclusive rights to the article and its contents:
| a) |
The rights to produce advance copies, reprints or offprints of the article, in full or in part, to undertake or allow translations into other languages, to distribute other forms or modified versions of the article, and to produce and distribute summaries or abstracts. |
| b) |
The rights to microfilm and microfiche editions or similar, to the use of the article and its contents in videotext, teletext, and similar systems, to recordings or reproduction on other media, digital or analogue, including electronic, magnetic, and optical media, and in multimedia form, as well as for public broadcasting in radio, television, or other forms of broadcast. |
| c) |
The rights to store the article and its contents in machine-readable or electronic form on all media (such as computer disks, compact disks, magnetic tape), to store the article and its contents in online databases belonging to the publisher or to third parties for viewing or for downloading by third parties, and to present or reproduce the article or its contents on visual display screens, monitors, and similar devices, either directly or via data transmission. |
| d) |
The rights to reproduce and distribute the article and its contents by all other means, including photomechanical and similar processes (such as photocopying or facsimile), and as part of so-called document delivery services. |
| e) |
The right to transfer any or all of the rights mentioned in this agreement as well as the rights retained by the Verwertungsgesellschaft ??WORT?? including the corresponding royalty rights to third parties within or outside Switzerland. |
|
Page charges / reprints: The journal offers the following two possibilities to the authors for covering the printing costs:
|
| i) |
page charges: Swiss francs (Sfr.) 90 per printed page for research papers, research notes and reviews and Sfr. 150 for abstracts of meetings (small print). No reprints are included in the page charge. |
| ii) |
reprints: instead of paying the page charges the authors can purchase a minimum of 100 reprints at the following costs: Sfr. 480 for up to 4 printed pages, Sfr. 850 for up to 8 printed pages, Sfr. 1700 for up to 16 printed pages and Sfr. 2480 for up to 24 printed pages. Additional 100 reprints can be purchased at much lower costs (Sfr. 120, 210, 424, and 620 for up to 4, 8, 16, and 24 printed pages respectively). All the prices are exclusive value-added tax. |
Galley proofs: Two galley proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Changes of content or stylistic changes may only be made in exceptional cases in the galley proofs. Corrections that exceed 5% of the typesetting cost will be invoiced to the authors
