About the journal

The Industrial Health is an international academic journal published by the National Institute of Industrial Health. First issued in 1963, it has been providing information four times a year to the readers and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2002.

We publish the Industrial Health in order to promote the research on various disciplines through providing a place to announce the findings on the way to control and improve the health conditions of workers and to apply the valuable research findings to the actual working environment.

Papers are contributed not only from Japan but from all over the world: East Asia, South East Asia, South Asia, Oceania, North America, Central and South America, and Europe. Contributed papers are closely examined by professors in Japan and overseas. The journal covers fields in medicine, ergonomics, industrial hygiene engineering and policy sciences.

The Industrial Health is being widely read and utilized in 450 universities and research institutions overseas and 600 institutions in Japan.

Just skim through the Industrial Health and you will find useful information.

2. Arrangement and Style of Manuscripts
Submit the original and three copies (including tables and figures) typed in double spacing on good quality paper (ca. 21 cm _ 29 cm) with wide margins. Number all pages beginning with the title page. Manuscripts should be arranged in the following order:
Title page should contain article type (review, original, etc.); complete title of article; names, affiliations and addresses of all authors; mailing address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address for correspondence; and running title (head) of no more than 55 characters including spaces. Use full capitalization in the authorユs family name and running title. Use initial capitalization except for articles, prepositions and conjunctions in all other places.
Abstract should precede the text and not exceed 200 words.
Key words with five to eight words that will adequately index the subject matter must be shown after the abstract.
Text should be generally subdivided into INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION and REFERENCES but its variation is acceptable when it is useful. Use units and common abbreviations; km, m, cm, mm, µm, å, nm, kg, g, mg, µg, l (liter), ml (milliliter), µl (microliter), kV, eV, yr (year), wk (week), d (day), h (hour), min (minute), s (second), ms (millisecond), µs (microsecond), ppm (parts per million), 。C (centigrade), SD (standard deviation), SE (standard error), CV (coefficient of variation), po (per os), sc (subcutaneous), ip (intraperitoneal) and iv (intravenous).
Tables should be typed on separate pages and numbered in the order they appear in the text using Arabic numerals (e.g., Table 3). Each table should be comprehensible without reference to the text. A table title written in small letters except the first letter should be included in each table.
Figures (illustrations and photographs) should be prepared on separate pages and numbered with Arabic numerals (e.g., Fig. 3). All figure titles and legends should be typed together on a separate sheet. Submit clear figures prepared in quality artwork or by machine for direct photoreproduction. Color figures can be printed at the authorsユ expense. In the right margin of the manuscript, indicate the places where tables and figures are to be inserted.
References should be cited in the manuscript by superscript Arabic numerals in right parenthesis (e.g.,1), or 2, 3) or 3-5)) and numbered in order of citation. Journal references should show names of all authors cited, year of publication, title of article, name of journal, volume and pages. Journal abbreviations should follow the usage of Index Medicus. Book references should include names of authors or editors, year of publication, title, edition (if other than first), page(s), publisher and place of publication. For examples:
  1) Ono-Ogasawara M, Furuse M, Matsumura Y, Yokota K (1992) Determination of diborane by adsorption sampling using modified silica gel and the chromotropic acid-HPLC method. Ind Health 30, 35-45.
  2) Honma T, Miyagawa M, Sato M, Hasegawa H (1985) Neurotoxicity and metabolism of methyl bromide in rats. Toxicol Appl Pharmacol 81, 183-91.

Further details on the preparation of manuscripts are set forth in the document メUniform Requirements of Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journalsモ prepared by the International Steering Committee of Medical Editors (see N Engl J Med (1991) 324, 424-8/Br Med J (1991) 302, 338-41).
Short Communication must not exceed four printed pages, including figures, tables and references. One printed page is approximately equivalent to three double-spaced typewritten pages. The manuscript should be presented in continuous style without subdivision and with no more than 3 figures and/or tables and no more than 15 references. The abstract should consist of less than 150 words. For other arrangements, follow the Arrangement and Style of Manuscripts.
Letter to the Editor is generally printed within one page and must not exceed two printed pages in maximum.
Human studies should be conducted in conformity with the Recommendations from the Declaration of Helsinki (1983). All manuscripts describing experiments on individual human subjects should, in principle, include a statement that informed consent was obtained from each subject and the appropriate ethics committees of the institutions, where the work was done, approved the experiments.

3. Proofs and Reprints
Authors will receive proofs for correction once. Only minor alterations of the finally accepted manuscript will be allowed. Authors will receive 50 free reprints.
