About the journal
IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications bridges the theory and practice of computer graphics. From specific algorithms to full system implementations, CG&A offers a unique combination of peer-reviewed feature articles and informal departments, including news and product announcements. Special applications sidebars relate research stories to commercial development. A cover story focuses on creative applications of the technology by an artist or designer. And graphics all-stars Jim Blinn and Andrew Glassner offer insight and wit in their popular columns. Published six times a year, CG&A is indispensable reading for people working at the leading edge of computer graphics technology and its applications in everything from business to the arts.
Instructions to Authors
IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications serves both users and designers of graphics hardware, software, and systems. Its readers work in industry, business, the arts, and universities.
Content
We welcome articles on topics across the graphics spectrum. We invite articles that present theories and/or relate practices along with those that report applications or discuss algorithms. We also welcome tutorials, surveys, and special topics. Articles are peer-reviewed, and departments are refereed. Example topics include
- Scientific visualization
- Display technology
- High-performance graphics engines
- CAD/CAM/CAE
- Computer imaging
- Geometric modeling
- Business graphics
- Human factors
- Distributed graphics techniques and systems
- Standards
- Rendering algorithms
- Computer animation and simulation
- Geographic information systems
- Multimedia
- Virtual reality
Theme issues
The Guest Editor Center provides information regarding special issue proposals. Contact Editor in Chief John Dill with proposals for theme issues.
CG&A typically devotes about two-thirds of the articles in an issue to a special topic. Articles on other topics also run in the theme issues to provide a balance of coverage. Articles submitted too late for a theme will be considered as ordinary articles for later publication.
Manuscript Submissions and Guidelines
Submitting a manuscript | Style standards | Length
The IEEE Computer Society uses a secure, Web-based manuscript submission and peer-review tracking system called Manuscript Central. Please use this system to upload your electronic submission. First-time users will need to create an account. The site provides detailed instructions on usage.
Manuscript Central significantly reduces the time required for the peer-review process. For more information, please see our submission guidelines and requirements located in the Author Center.
Style standards
All manuscripts are refereed in a manner consistent with other archival publications. However, CG&A's presentation style differs. Articles must be written clearly and concisely. The style must be narrative, active, informal, and direct. For active style, we recommend that authors use first and second person (I, we, and you) and verbs other than "to be." Authors should make every effort to help the reader understand the concepts presented. We encourage the use of examples, diagrams, and photographs.
If you use terms that nonexpert readers might not understand, consider submitting independent clarifications, preferably with examples. These will be published as sidebars (broken-out boxes) within the article. Judicious use of this technique can improve the flow of the principal story.
Before publication, staff editors edit all articles to conform to house style and space constraints. Therefore, you should be prepared to work closely with the editorial staff in the two to three months before the publication date. This interaction is provided to increase clarity, conciseness, and agreement with CG&A style.
Length
IEEE CG&A is looking for succinct, practical, readable articles that will appeal to experts and non-experts alike.
Your article should not exceed 8,000 words, including all text, the abstract, keywords, bibliography, biographies, and table text; 10 figures; and 12 references. Any article that exceeds this word count may be rejected automatically without going through the review process. Include a title page containing your submission's title and the names, affiliations, and contact information for all authors.
Articles intended for departments, such as Visualization Viewpoints, range up to 3,000 words. Each department has specific guidelines—please visit our Department Guidelines page for more information.
We also encourage authors to solicit short sidebars to accompany their articles from people using their product or technique. The goal is to explain to readers how the concept is applied. Authors could also write a short explanation of how their techniques could be applied if they have not already done so as part of the article.
