About the journal

From the analytical engine to the supercomputer, from Pascal to von Neumann, from punched cards to CD-ROMs -- the IEEE Annals of the History of Computing covers the breadth of computer history. Featuring scholarly articles by leading computer scientists and historians, as well as firsthand accounts by computer pioneers, the Annals is the primary publication for recording, analyzing, and debating the history of computing. The Annals also serves as a focal point for people interested in uncovering and preserving the records of this exciting field. The quarterly publication is an active center for the collection and dissemination of information on historical projects and organizations, oral history activities, and international conferences.

Instructions to Authors

Scope

The IEEE Annals of the History of Computing serves as the archival journal for the history of computing. Its contents include historical papers and records concerned with the international computing and information processing field, and information on the heritage of the computing and information processing field for scholarly and educational purposes. The Annals is managed by an Editor in Chief, chosen by the Computer Society who works with an appointed Editorial Board of scholars and practitioners. In addition to scholarly papers and practitioner’s memoirs, Annals has departments which contain biographies, reviews, anecdotes, and current events of importance to computer historians.

Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to visit the "About Annals" ’Web page for more information.

In addition, the Annals' homepage contains information about the latest issue, including material which could not be accommodated due to space limitations.

The members of the Editorial Board can be found at http://www.computer.org/annals/edboard.htm.

Manuscript Requirements

Style and Specs

Style Standards | Manuscript Length | Article Format

Style Standards

All manuscripts submitted must be original. Articles published, either completely or in significant part, in other magazines or journals will not be considered for publication. Authors are responsible for securing all necessary clearances, including reprint rights, for any materials reproduced from other papers or articles. All copyrights must be clearly identified.

We do not allow plagiarism. If you use someone else’s concepts, put them in your own words and reference the original source. Material taken word for word—or only marginally modified—from other publications must be put in quotes, identified as someone else’s words, and referenced; this includes illustrations and tabular data.

All articles should be comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the article, that is, to people interested in the history of computing generally.

Each accepted manuscript must have sufficient introductory material; at least 10 percent of its total length should be of a tutorial nature. A brief literature survey will not be considered as satisfying this requirement. The tutorial section should include material describing early background that predates the event or activity to be described, the state of the art at the time, a brief overview of the subsequent history, and an evaluation of the impact of this event or activity on the field of computing.

To improve readability, the material should be augmented by suitable tables, drawings, charts, or photographs.

Manuscript length

Feature articles normally run from six to ten magazine pages. A magazine page of text is typically 800 words, while each illustration is roughly equivalent to 200 words. Sidebars, reference entries, and biographies must be included in the count. Exceptions may be made for exceptional articles and topics.

Memoirs, which discuss an individual’s life, career, and accomplishments may be of any length, but usually do not exceed 8 pages, including photographs and other materials.

Materials intended for departments, such as Anecdotes, range up to 3,000 words.

Article format

Give the title of the article and the corresponding author’s name, affiliation (or past affiliation), address, telephone number, and email address, plus the names and addresses of other authors, on one sheet. Include an informative abstract of 100 words or less. Do not cite references in the abstract. Provide a list of key words that will assist readers in identifying the focus of your material.

Articles should be accompanied by a good-quality black-and-white photo of the author(s) (preferably 3” × 5”  or larger). A brief biographical sketch should be in the following order: current positions and technical interests, prior professional experience and other important activities, awards, education, and professional affiliations.

Illustrations

All illustrations must be cited in text and have numbers and captions. Graphs should show only the coordinate axes (or at the most the major gridlines) to avoid a dense, hard-to-read illustration. The illustration should be readable at two columns’ width (5.5 inches). Original illustrations should be submitted with the final accepted version, and we encourage you to send digital versions of your figures. Originals should be clear so that staff artists can reproduce them using the magazine’s visual style. If you have screen shots, please submit them in electronic format (.EPS, Postscript, TIFF, JPEG, or Windows .BMP). Photographs should be submitted as TIFF or JPEG files.

Please list art credits/copyrights for images and obtain written permission for the images. Contact the Managing Editor with questions. Prints should have good contrast and be at least 3” × 5”. Author photographs should be submitted in black and white and no smaller than passport size.

Submission and Review

Manuscripts considered for publication in the Annals must pass a peer- review process consistent with other technical periodicals. Personal memoirs are reviewed by the EIC and may be sent out for review as appropriate.

The Magazine Assistant needs an electronic version (such as Microsoft Word or .pdf) of all manuscript submissions, which you can send as an email attachment. If you’re working with another file format, please contact Magazine Assistant Alkenia Winston at annals-ma@computer.org.

Please include a cover letter and make sure to include all author names, professional affiliations, mailing addresses, daytime telephones, email addresses, and fax numbers on the first page of the submission, as stated above.

After a paper has been refereed and the author has been notified of acceptance by the EIC, authors will be requested by the IEEE Computer Society Publications Office to supply electronic files of the accepted version of the paper, original illustrations, authors’ biographical sketches, and photographs by email or ftp and a completed copyright release. The manuscript will be copyedited by Annals’ staff editors. This is a collaborative process in which the author and editor work together to achieve a concise, well-worded article.
