About the journal

The premier publication of the Society, Human Factors is a peer-reviewed journal presenting original papers of scientific merit that contribute to the understanding and advancement of the systematic consideration of people in relation to machines, systems, and environments.

Articles encompassing basic and applied research, quantitative and qualitative approaches to theory, evaluative reviews of the literature, and state-of-the-art reviews cover all aspects of the human-system interface.

Human Factors also features special sections highlighting important areas. In recent years, topics have included fatigue, elderly drivers, training, measurement, visual displays, assisting people with functional impairments, human information processing, expert systems, and vigilance. These special issues can be used as supplementary materials in the classroom.

Instructions to Authors

ARTICLE FORMATS

The following types of articles may be submitted.

Regular Aticles

Regular articles are 13-25 double-spaced manuscript pages and represent original contributions to topics of interest to the human factors?ergonomics community.  The article format is appropriate for any major research effort that provide a clear increment in knowledge.  It is also suitable for longer theoretical and methodological contributions but not appropiate for single studies of limited scope.

Review Articles

Review articles present a synthesis of published work on a topic of interest.  Reviews should be organized as efficiently as possible so as not to exceed 50 double-spaced manuscript pages.  Review articles must provide an original perspective on the literature reviewed, not merely a summary, including a "status report" and extension of knowledge on the topic, often involving evaluation of the previous work, practical or theoretical conclusions, and identification of future research directions.

Research Reports

Research Reports do not exceed 17 double-spaced manuscript pages, including references.  The Research Report format is ideal for most single laboratory of field experiments, replication studies, and theoretical or methodological notes.  It is not suitable for "exploratory" or "pilot" research, most of which is not acceptable.

REQUIREMENTS

HUMAN FACTORS is a refereed journa.  Authors may request a totally blind review.  Allow approximately 8 weeks for first review.  Accepte articles are often published within 12 months(contingent on timely receipt of a revised manuscript).

Papers that have been published elsewhere in the open literature in the same form, in any language, will not be accepted.  Suitably revised papers printed in the proceedings of technical meetings may be submitted for consideration.

Articles that are not in the public domain are copyrighted in the name of HFES.  A copyright release must be executed before a manuscript can be published.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

HUMAN FACTORS manuscripts should be prepared according to the Fifth Edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 750 first St., NE, Washington, DC 20002; 800/374-2721).  Manuscripts will not be considered for publication unless they are prepared according to these instructions

Language.  Only articles written in English will be considered.

Typing the paper.  All material should be typed, double spaced on one side of each sheet of letter-sized paper, with one-inch margins.  Be sure to number each page.  Level 1 text headings should appear in solid caps, centered; level 2 headings are in italics, flush to the left margin; and level 3 headings are in italics, indented, and run in with the rest of the paragraph they precede.

Cover page.  The first page of the manuscript should contain only the following information:

a.       Article title(caps/lowercase)

b.       Name of each author(all caps) and the author’s institution, city, state, and country (caps/lowercase)

d.       contact information for the author to whom requests for reprints should be sent (give complete address)

e.       Short version of the title for running heads

f.        Several key words for indexing purposes

Units of measure.  Magnitudes of all measured quantities must be given in the International System of Units(SI).

Text citations and references.  Reference citations in the text should follow the author-date method. Arrange parenthetical citations alphabetically by first author’s name.  References should be arranged alphabetically by the author’s surname and given at the end of the article.

Footnotes.  Use of substantive or explanatory footnotes is not permitted.  Such notes should be incorporated into the text or omitted.

Tables and figures.  Each table and figure should be on a separate page and grouped together at the end.  Submit only original drawings o high-quality black and white reproductions for figure (graphs, illustrations, etc.).  On the reverse of each figure, write the author’s name and figure number in pencil.
