About the journal

Enter the fascinating realm of Historical Studies in the Physical and Biological Sciences (HSPS), a journal that chronicles the history of science as it has developed since the 17th century.

HSPS is published biannually and explores a vast number of scientific fields, social histories, and their relevant institutions, including physics, chemistry, astronomy, meteorology, geology, biophysics, radiation biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics. Widely regarded as the leading journal in the historiography of science and technology, HSPS brings you nearly 200 pages of seminal, often-cited articles, essay reviews, and annotated bibliographies.

Instructions to Authors

Information for authors on disk preparation

GENERAL INFORMATION

Articles should be supplied on a disk or sent by e-mail to dianaw@ohst7.berkeley.edu.

Label disks clearly with journal name, volume, issue, and author name. Include the name and version number of the program that was used to create the file.

Manuscripts should be provided in Microsoft Word format, in a version no higher than Word 98. If saving the file in Word format is not possible, save it in Rich Text Format.

The version of the article on the disk provided should be the final, completed version. The double-spaced print-out of the manuscript should match exactly what is on the disk. Errors resulting from discrepancies between hard copy and disk are costly to fix in page proofs and can delay schedules significantly.

All pieces of article: text, footnotes, references, tables, etc. should be in a single computer file folder. Captions should be grouped together in a single file.

Delete all old versions of files or unrelated files from the disk before sending.

Tables should be provided as separate computer files, and should also be provided as hard copy. If they are particularly complicated, please supply them in typeset form (which can be reduced or enlarged to fit the text size).

Run your word-processing program's spell-check function when your article is finished. However, remember, that while this will catch most typos, it won't catch homonyms for the correct word, or typos that change the correct word into another word.

CHARTS, GRAPHS, FIGURES, MAPS, ILLUSTRATIONS:

Art should not be embedded in a word-processing program.
Art that has been created on the computer should be supplied as both:
1. high quality (not bitmapped) camera-ready copy
This will be reduced or enlarged to fit within the text. Avoid using very fine gray screens or bars or very thin (hairline) rules AND
2.a. a digital file in the EPS format if you have access to the technology and are comfortable with it. (This includes Freehand or Illustrator files and is especially useful for us when art comes from applications like Excel, Harvard Graphics, and other programs with chart and graphic representation features. Convert text in EPS illustrations to outlines.) OR
2.b. a disk copy of the image and its font in the original application used to create it.

Line art that is scanned should be scanned between 900-1270 dpi, and saved in TIFF format. We can't guarantee print-quality of art supplied in GIF or JPEG format, although these may be usable.

PHOTOS:
All photos should be supplied as black and white glossies. If photos must be supplied as scans, or if you have any other questions concerning artwork, contact us at the office.

Formatting information

Note: the conversion process from disk to typeset version will change the appearance of the article; however it won't change actual keystrokes, other than any changes that are made during editing.

Formatting should be consistent and as simple as possible. Eliminate all non-essential formatting e.g., underlined words. Boldface and italic may be left as is.

Prepare manuscript on same hardware/software from start to finish.

Use the Times font.

Double-space the entire manuscript.

Provide a separate list of special characters, (diacritics, unusual symbols, Greek letters) showing how these characters appear on disk and in hard copy.

Margins should be set flush left, with a ragged right margin, not justified.

All subheads should be typed flush left.

Do not put running heads on pages.

Manuscript pages should be numbered.

Use a single tab to indent each paragraph. Delete extra indents. Do not use space bar or style formatting for indenting.

Use tabs, not spaces, to define columns, if necessary.

Delete any extra spaces between paragraphs, notes, extracts, etc.

Use one space after colons, periods.

Do not use hard returns, except at the ends of paragraphs, or titles, or items in a list.

Make sure all numbers are numbers, not letter "l" or letter "O."

Make sure all EQUATIONS are clear and easy to read on the printed manuscript. Your version of the manuscript in relation to equations may appear different on your hardware and software than on ours, so a good hard-copy is necessary as we most likely have to reset them. Please make explicit if any symbols are to be bolded or italicized.
