Instructions to Authors

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

The simplest way to submit a manuscript is electronically via e-mail to hamb@ucsd.edu. If a manuscript is submitted electronically, it is not necessary to mail hard copies unless you are otherwise advised. For hard copies send one original plus three copies and three sets of the original figures via courier or express mail to: John B. West, M.D., Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief, Department of Medicine 0623A, University of California San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, CA 92093-0623; Tel: 858-534-4192; Fax: 858-534-4812.

Research Paper

Type the entire manuscript including references, tables, and figure legends double-spaced with wide margins on all sides. Submit the original and three copies, each with a set of original illustrations. In addition, please submit the entire text of the manuscript on a 3.5 inch disk in PC or Macintosh format (Microsoft Word or WordPerfect). The review process will be expedited by electronically sending the complete manuscript including figures and captions via e-mail to hamb@ucsd.edu, and this is strongly encouraged. Preferred file formats include PDF, Word (.doc), WordPerfect (.wpd), Excel (.xls), Photoshop (.eps), and TIF. If a manuscript is submitted electronically, it is not necessary to mail hard copies unless you are otherwise advised.

On the first page, give the title of the paper, full name(s) of all author(s), institutional affiliation(s), and the name (with complete address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address) to whom correspondence should be directed. We require the full mailing address and contact information (telephone, fax, and e-mail address) for EACH author listed on your paper. Please include the address(es) either on the title page of your paper, or on a separate sheet. Please also indicate the corresponding author. Supply a running title of no more than 40 characters (including spaces). On the second page, supply an abstract of about 200 words, stating the aims, results, and conclusions drawn from the study and 5-6 key words to help with indexing. This should be followed by the introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgments, references, tables, figure legends, and figures. Results and discussion should be separate sections. Number pages consecutively; the first author's last name should appear on each page. Authors should review the style and clarity of their manuscripts with colleagues before submission. Please follow the protocol described herein to avoid delay in publication. Authors should note that manuscripts may be edited if needed to ensure clear grammatical English usage.

All papers will be sent to two or more expert reviewers for their opinions. The editor welcomes suggestions concerning potential reviewers. Studies involving human subjects or experimental animals should explicitly state that the protocols were reviewed by the appropriate institutional review committees and that, in the case of human subjects, informed consent was obtained. Any possible financial conflicts of interest, for example in drug studies, should be disclosed.

Brief Reports and Letters to the Editor

Submission of Brief Reports is also welcome. A Brief Report should communicate new scientific or methodological information in the field of high altitude medicine and biology. It should be divided as follows: abstract (no more than 200 words), introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion (please note that in Brief Reports, results and discussion can be fused), acknowledgments, references, tables, figure legends, and figures. The whole report should be composed of no more than four journal pages (about 3,000 words), including tables and figures. For general rules please follow the guidelines given for research papers. Letters to the Editor are also welcome but should not exceed 600 words and one illustration.

Tables and Illustrations

Type each table with its caption on a separate sheet of paper. Use Arabic numerals to number tables. Do not repeat information that is given in the text, and do not make a table for data that can be given in the text in one or two sentences.

Original glossy photographs, or 35mm slides, for all illustrations must be supplied with the manuscript. (Photocopies cannot be used for reproduction.) All illustrations should be numbered and bear the first author's name on a label attached to the back. Do not write on the backs of prints, use paper clips, or deface the prints in any way. The top of the illustration should be indicated. A legend should be supplied for each illustration, and all legends numbered consecutively and typed (double-spaced) on a separate page following the references and tables. Figures should be numbered in the order cited in the text. Bar graphs should have solid black and white (no gray) colors or contrasting patterns. A complete, separately collated set should be submitted with each copy of the manuscript.

Illustrations may also be submitted on disk. Preferred graphics formats are EPS or TIF. Clearly label the disk with program used and accompany it with hard copies of each figure. Be sure the disk only contains the required illustrations, each clearly identified. For e-mail submissions a PDF file of the complete paper including figures and tables is also welcome.

The journal will publish color photographs, but the author will be charged for the cost of color separations and printing at the rate of $275 per piece of color art plus $1,200 per page of color. The Publisher will provide the author with a more precise cost estimate when the figures are received. For further details, contact the Publisher.

References

All references should be cited by author(s) and dates within the text [i.e., In some studies, REM sleep is virtually abolished at high altitude (Pappenheimer, 1977)]. If more than two authors are involved, use et al. after the first author's name [i.e., (Lahiri et al., 1999)]. If more than one paper by the same author(s) and year is cited in the text, use a lower case letter designation to indicate the individual paper [i.e., (Smith, 1984a)]. Use the same designation in the reference list.

The reference list should be double-spaced and listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper. Each reference should include a complete list of authors and the complete title of the cited paper, as follows:

Journal citation: Lahiri S., Smatresk N., Pokorski M., Barnard P., Mokashi A., and McGregor K.H. (1984). Dopaminergic efferent inhibition of carotid body chemoreceptors in chronically hypoxic cats. Am. J. Physiol. 247:R24-R28.

Chapter in an edited book: Weil J.V., Kryger M.H., and Scoggin C.H. (1978). Sleep and breathing at high altitude. In: Sleep Apnea Syndromes. C. Guilleminault and W. Dement, eds. Liss, New York; pp. 119-136.

Entire book: Barcroft J. (1925). The Respiratory Function of the Blood. Part I: Lessons from High Altitude. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK.

If work is in press, give the journal in which it is to be published. Abbreviations of journal names should follow the style of Index Medicus.

Permissions

The author must obtain permission whenever it is required in conjunction with the reproduction of material such as figures and tables from copyrighted material. Written permission must be obtained (by the author) from the publisher of the journal or book concerned. The publication from which the figure or table is taken must be listed in the reference list. Finally, a footnote of a reprinted table, or of the legend of a reprinted figure should read "reprinted by permission from Jones et al. (1991)" and the appropriate reference should be cited in the reference list. All permission listings must be shown in the manuscript; they cannot be entered on proofs.

Manuscripts submitted to this journal must not be under consideration elsewhere.

REPRINTS

Reprints may be ordered by using the special reprint order form that will accompany the proofs. Reprints ordered after the issue is printed will be charged at a higher rate.
