About the journal

Heart & Lung presents original, peer-reviewed articles on techniques, advances, investigations, and observations in acute and critical care. The Journal's acute care articles focus on critical care provided for a short time, often outside the intensive care unit. Other sections focus on infection control, neonatal nursing, advanced practice nursing, pharmacotherapy, ethical issues, and patient education. Many articles provide nurses with a framework for applying research results in clinical practice. In addition, Heart & Lung features CE articles to help readers meet their continuing education needs.
Instructions to Authors
Types of paper: The Journal publishes papers in the following categories. Original articles should include the following sections: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements and References. Review articles may be accepted after correspondence with the Editor. Mini-reviews deal with selected aspects of hepatology undergoing rapid change. Short communications are short, complete research papers and should contain concise definitive information which merits rapid dissemination. Articles should consist of no more than 4-6 printed pages (approx. 2000-3000 words, inclusive of up to 4 tables and/or figures, and including 10-20 references). Preliminary notes are brief reports of preliminary research results, Preliminary notes will be considered regardless of the choice of journal for final publication. Articles should consist of preferably no more than 2-4 printed pages (approx. 800-1600 words, inclusive of up to 2 tables and/or figures, and including up to 12 references). Case reports will be accepted only if they contain important new information and should not exceed 10 typed pages.
Submission procedures: Submission of a paper to Heart & Lung implies that it is not being submitted for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief, Professor Hiromasa Ishii, Kashiwaya Building II, 3-28-10 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0033, Japan, Tel: (+81)3-3812-1567/Fax: (+81)3-3812-6620. A letter of submission should accompany all contributions, signed by all of the authors, providing assurance: (1) that all of the listed authors have participated actively in the study; (2) that all of the authors have seen and approved the submitted manuscript; (3) that the study complies with current ethical consideration; (4) that the manuscript reports unpublished work not under consideration elsewhere; and (5) authors are also asked to identify possible conflicts of interest. The authors should state why they wish the paper to be published rapidly.
Electronic manuscripts: Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs. For the initial submission of manuscripts for consideration, hardcopies are sufficent. For the processing of accepted papers, electronic versions are preferred. After final acceptance, your disk plus three, final and exactly matching printed versions should be submitted together. Double density (DD) or high density (HD)diskettes (3?or 5?inch) are acceptable. It is important that the file saved is in the native format of the wordprocessor program used. Label the disk with the name of the computer and wordprocessing package used, your name, and the name of the file on the disk. Further information may be obtained from the Publisher.
Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (including 3 copies of all figures). They should be typed out double-spaced throughout and on one side of the page only. Authors should complete the 'Checklist for Authors' before sending their manuscripts. Incomplete or improperly prepared manuscripts will be returned to the authors without review.
Ethical considerations: Manuscripts reporting data obtained from research conducted in human subjects must include a statement of assurance in the Materials and Methods section of the manuscript that (1) informed consent was obtained from each patient and (2) the study protocol conforms to the ethical guidelines of the 1975 Declaration of Helsinki as reflected in a priori approval by the institution's human research committee. Manuscripts reporting experiments using animals must include a statement giving assurance that all animals received humane care and that the study protocols comply with the institution's guidelines.
Layout: The manuscripts of original articles should be arranged as follows: Title Page, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables, Figure Legends, Figures. The Title Page should bear the title, the author's name (including first name in full), and the Department and Institution where the work was done. The name, telephone, fax and e-mail numbers of the author to whom communications, proofs and reprint requests should be sent should also appear on this page.
Abstracts should be no longer than 200 words.
Keywords or short phrases (3-7) should be typed separately under the Abstract and should not be taken from the title.
References should accord with the system used in Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (N Engl J Med 1991; 324: 424-428). They should be numbered consecutively in square brackets in the text and listed numerically in the reference list at the end of the text with journal titles abbreviated in the style of Index Medicus. List all authors when six or less; when seven or more, list first three and add 'et al.'. All articles in the list of references should be cited in the text and, conversely, all references cited in the text must be presented in the list.
Tables should be numbered consecutively in the text with Arabic numberals and each typed on a separate sheet with the table number and title centered above the table and explanatory notes below the table.
Legends and figures: Three complete sets of illustrations should be submitted unmounted in envelopes. Line drawings (including graphs) should be drawn in black ink on white paper or on tracing paper with blue or faint grey rulings; graduation will not be reproduced. Lettering should be large enough to permit photographic reduction. If figures are not to be reduced their format should not exceed 13.5x 20cm (the type area of the Journal). Photographs (or half-tone illustrations) must be of good quality, submitted as black and white prints on glossy paper, and have as much contrast as possible. The degree of reduction will be determined by the Publisher, but in general it should be assumed that the same degree of reduction will be applied to all figures in the same paper. For photomicrographs, where possible, a scale should appear on the photograph. Colour plates will be reproduced at the expense of the author(s). Illustrations should be clearly marked on the reverse side with the figure number (corresponding with the order in which figures are presented in the text), orientation (top) and author's name; a soft pencil or preferably a felt-tipped pen should be used for marking photographs. The illustrations should be numbered with Arabic numerals. The legends should be typed separately.
Proofreading: Authors will recieve proofs but, in view of the intended rapid publication schedule of Heart & Lung, proofreading will be performed by the Publisher. Unless specifically requested by the author on receipt of the proof, the Publisher will proceed to publish without delay.
